Yeah that's enough words since everybody knows what Ryzen 5 is :D

    • +2

and the fact that it's on here at least twice a week nowadays (285 last week, 279 two weeks ago, 289 four weeks ago - all from there)
shipping from there is the reason I haven't jumped yet ($10ish to Melbourne)

definitely on the lookout for a deal.. maybe I should get a GPU first (staggering the build out)

  • nice price for the 3600.

      Before shipping…

    Zen 3 is out soon.

    • What's the release date for Zen3 then? I can't find it.

      • Speculated to be September or October.

        • Yeah that's what i have seen all over the net. Would not say that sept-oct with no actual release date is soon though. B550 motherboards mid june release yeah that i would consider soon.

          • @Ferny32: A few months is soon enough, considering you keep a system for at least a few years. I'd say if you can wait, wait. The 4000 series mobile processes are already out, so I would say the desktop 4000 series wouldn't be far behind. Retailers are just trying to sell stock at a relatively small discount while they can, before the price drops further.

            • @happychappy1: 4000 series mobile are 3000 series desktop - zen 2. They are actually very late.

The 4000 series desktop are a new architecture that is still in testing. It will be announced at a yearly IT convention (computex?) In September.

There is no promises it will be available for purchase, and most likely won't be on sale until November at a minimum

  • +2

Unless delivery for you is less than $10 It might be very slightly cheaper to get a 3600 here with the PHREEZE coupon

    • Cheers - just bought from there. Thanks for the tip :)

    • damn thats a crazy deal should post

  • +2

Just be sure to pick either a X570 or wait for B550 board for zen 3 incase you want to upgrade later. Not saying wait for zen 3 (that's still few months away) just make sure your board will be compatible if you're doing a whole build

    • +4

How often do you upgrade your CPU?

      • +2

I'm not necessarily saying they will buy zen 3 right away but even if you just want the option in 2-3 years time you could go to the top end zen 3 for cheap. It's just a consideration. Suppose I should've framed it more as a suggestion to keep in mind rather than telling you to do it

        • +1

Both points are worth considering but yes if you're the sort of person whose only upgrading the main components every 4-6 years then not gonna be worth it.

Even 3 years time from now, chances are the chips on new socket + DDR5 will outstrip what's on offer today.

    • +2

With Zen 3 being the last in this socket line I honestly wouldn't bother with upgrade compatibility. If you really think you will upgrade to Zen 3 then wait 2 months or so otherwise get something now and skip to Zen 4 next.

edit: it is also quite likely board manufacturers will release firmware for 400 series motherboards for zen 3, similiar to what they did in the past for zen 2 (obviously can't bank on that though).

      • Still worth it for some. Suppose I could say "keep in mind a 500 board is required" I could see some people from a 3600 going to maybe a higher up 4000 series. It could be for reasons of maybe 3600 is best you could afford now but later you decide you want 12 cores for whatever reason.

Just something to keep in mind for someone just worth mentioning so people know and aren't dissapointed later.

        • +2

pretty fringe case really, you pay a lot more for the 500 series boards at the moment and it is highly likely the 400 series will be made compatible if you go with one of the vendors with a history of supporting. realistically you can save money now and skip zen 3 or just wait and go straight to zen 3. You can't even get B550 boards yet. from all reports we are likely only looking at a 15% improvement in Zen 3 so if money is a factor right now I definitely would not be going for a 500 board with a 3600.

      • It's not going to be likely to be any bios updates for the 400 series to support zen 3. A lot of people are angry right now because they have bought a B450 before AMD made that annoucement. Gamernexus did an indepth video explaining the details if anyone wants to check it out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JluNkjdpxFo

So basically know that buying a 400 series board now for either of these cpu doesn't leave you with many upgrade options you would otherwise have with a 500 series board. There might be a small chance that one specific 400 series board gets an updated bios for newer chips, but they should know it's not going to be likely.

I would personally get a 500 series board especially with a Ryzen 5 3600 where an upgrade is quite likely sooner than the Ryzen 7.

        • honestly if you think you would upgrade to a zen 3 then wait. It is literally only a couple of months away, unless you are desperate for an upgrade right now and you absolutely must have a 15% improvement in 3 months then it really doesn't make sense. Zen 3 is end of line for socket so you don't want to be spending a heap of money as next years zen 4 release will be physically incompatible.

      • Highly unlikely that board manufacturers will do that. AMD have already said that they won't be giving official support for doing so which will make it even harder for board manufacturers to write their own updated BIOS. The only company that might do it is MSI due to the corner they've backed themselves into with marketing for the MAX variants of their B450 boards.

        • +1

AMD said the same with Zen 2 and board manufacturers gave support.

          • @gromit: Was that AMD or MSI? The farce I could remember was board manufacturers releasing 400 series updates before 300 and everyone freaking out and rumouring that there would be no Zen+ support on 300 series, which was never confirmed by AMD. There was an email from MSI that said 300 series wouldn't be getting updates but MSI back flipped on that.

            • @Trance N Dance: Officially the 300 series chipset is unsupported for Zen 2. They wrote the code to provide the support and then left it up to individual manufacturers to decide whether to add it to the MB's.

        • and as expected it is now official, 400 series motherboards will support Zen 3.
          https://www.anandtech.com/show/15807/amd-to-support-zen-3-an…

    • Buy a used b350 board and put the cash towards better GPU. (profanity) waiting for b550 edit:b350 board that has updated BIOS!!

  • Ryzen 2600 to 3700x? Worth the upgrade with Coles MasterCard price protection?

    • I went from 2600 to 3600X and noticed a difference so I'd say worth it yeah. That said check out gaming bemchmarks not much in it between 3600X and 3700X if that's your thing. Can save some $$

      • +1

You don't even need the X version, 3600 v 3700X is nothing between them for gaming, other use cases though that will benefit from the extra cores is another story.

        • I was torn between either getting a 3600 and another cpu cooler for around 150ish or get the 3700x which comes with a better stock cooler and just use that. Ended up going the 3600.

          • @Ferny32: Nice, been happy with it?

I'm doing a build at the moment, want to go the 3700 myself but just don't have the use case and can't justify $200 extra for 2 more cores.

            • @Osiris: still being delivered. Putting a mini itx build together for my brother. He wants to get into iracing.

            • @Osiris: Depends what gpu you're coupling it with. I've got a gtx 1070 and gaming with this gpu, the gpu is the bottleneck. For gaming the 3700x would do very little. Maybe in a few years it will but by that stage there's something better. Of course if it's a workstation pc and gaming pc in one it could be worth it else gaming only 3600

              • @FrozenFred: I have a 2080 Super. Is my 2600 a bottleneck at 1440p?

                • @R3XNebular: hmm that's a tough one. Higher resolution gaming such as 1440p+ uses GPU way more than CPU so I'd say no. But a 2600 is like 20% slower than a 3600, overclocking the 2600 would be beneficial for the higher Mhz so you could overclock and see if there's any difference. Actually i'm gaming at 1440p too so my GTX 1070 is bottlenecking

              • @FrozenFred: I'm putting in one of my old hd7970 ghz editions in which will be fine for now for iracing. Doing this as I told my brother to get a new nvidia or amd card when they come out then he can play other more gpu demanding games with all the new features

                • +1

@Ferny32: Yeah good idea. My build is also mini itx in a inwin a1 case. Looks really nice

                  • @FrozenFred: Sweet went with the lian li tu150 myself. My bro likes the idea of the handle so he can easily move it around.

                  • +2

@FrozenFred: Nice just ordered this case for my new build

          • @Ferny32: The stock cooler on the 3600 is fine. These CPUs can't overclock after all. It's obsolete thinking.

        • +1

I got lucky with my X version it boosts to 4.4ghz on 4/6 cores and the other 2 get to 3.75ghz. So worth the extra $50 :)

Plus I feel good knowing I'm faster that all the non-X people out there, the little bit extra performance has this invaluable feeling of goodness on the inside all non-X people are lacking

          • @4foxache: lol well can't put a price on feelings :p

  • +1

I’m looking for build my own midspec gaming tower, idont have any rush, what else I should buy with this?

    • +1

AMD B550 motherboards will be released mid June so you should wait to buy one of those.

      • +1

Do you think current gen CPU's and other parts may fall in price around then as well? I'm looking to put together the same thing and make use of EOFY sales

        • Me too. Not sure if B450 mobo prices will fall when B550 comes out, but it would be nice.

With the the slower rate of CPU performance growth these days, you can keep a decent CPU for 5 or even 10 years (I'm only now looking at upgrading my CPU from 2011 and not because I really NEED to), so skipping Zen 3 is an option for most bargain-conscious people.

        • +1

I think B450 prices will definitely fall with the release of B550, but B450 is not going to support zen3 like they did for zen2.
You also have to consider the fact that the AUD is at a very low point right now and is likely going to bounce back up, although when and by how much is going to depend and not something we will know for certain.

Right now is probably one of the worse time to build a PC with everything going on, and all the next gen stuff are literally right around the corner. It's not just saying you can always wait for next gen to come out, but if you can hold on just a little bit, I think that patience will be worth it.

  • For those who are interested 3700x and 3900x cheaper on amazon If you have prime, sign up for 30days if not

    • 3700X
$504 on amazon, US import not local stock and delivery not until June.
      https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07SXMZLPK

      • oh thanks didn't see that.
Only couple weeks, not too bad though

        • +1

some people have said Amazon is easy to deal with for warranty claims others not so much. I think for $5~ factoring in postage I'd be inclined to buy locally for peace of mind.

  • +1

3700x was $480~ on Amazon US a couple of days ago. I picked one up myself and it shipped on the day of ordering.

  • +1

You know how sometimes you go and buy something, only to see that 5 or 6 months later, it has dropped significantly in price? And your heart sinks, thinking maybe you should have waited, to save money?

Well, I bought 3700X first week of launch, for $493 delivered. Looks like waiting would not have saved me much on this occasion. And also i must say… this cpu is excellent. Easily the best cpu I have ever owned.

    • Ordered a 3700X on the day of launch. I paid $460 with an ebay 20% off sale.. :).. price has only gone up from then lol

Ram and motherboards were cheaper then too. Doesnt always pay to wait.

    • +1

      Yes indeed, unprecedented times…

      • +1

Yes, when the same GPU sold by Amazon (not marketplace) can price fluctuate by >$150 between days. As the item has not shipped yet, I am forced to check daily for price changes.

    • Definitely doesn't always pay to wait. That said six months is a long time, price changes are inevitable and honestly I rarely care by then unless it was a deeply unnecessary purchase.

It's easy to point to prices and quantify what you could have saved by waiting; it's less easy to quantify and therefore easier to overlook what you gained by having the item for those six months. At some point you have to pull the trigger and you win some, you lose some, that's how it goes.

  • +1

Just noticed the AMD Ryzen 5 1600AF is $169.00 what a bargain for six cores, if you have a firm budget.

  • 1% surcharged on paypal, what a joke. also shipping is extra $10.67.. shopping express hasnt changed

    • +1

1% is kinda cheap for how much paypal rip people off. Personally I am surprised more places don't charge paypal fees, there fees are worse than discovery or Amex for the seller. then top it all off with it being the scammers preferred method of payment.

      • I am aware paypal charges the merchant a percentage, but I have never been surcharged by any company because I used paypal.

        • yep, it is getting more and more common though, with razor thin margins I would expect you will see a lot more of it. Paypal is simply the worst form of payment for a seller to accept.

personally I find this awesome, it means those of us that prefer to use other methods are no longer subsidising those that prefer paypal with higher prices.

          • @gromit: guys can we focus on the real issue here…its been 24 hours since we've had a new Ryzen deal, im getting withdrawal symptoms.

            • @Osiris: LOL, fair enough. must say I have been struggling with whether to buy now with a 450/470 motherboard and 3700X or wait till Zen 3 and B550. I was ready to pull the trigger last week then saw the decision has been made for me by the mini itx case I want not being available till late July so I have to wait now anyway.

              • +1

                @gromit:

mini itx case I want not being available till late July so I have to wait now anyway.

                Which ITX case is this?
I'm waiting for the NZXT H1, but also had a pre-order down for the Sidearm T1 (FormD)

                • @fatal: It is the NZXT H1 in white :-)

          • @gromit: Fair. I get your point. I try to avoid paypal because it charges unnecessary rates. I only used it to do an express checkout since it was limited stock.
