  • Thanks op. Just what I need to race with against the 42065

  • camel says its been down to $70 in recent days…

    • This is lowest price at Amazon in over 1 month. Prior to that, has been lower, yes.

I bought two for $79 about 6 weeks ago.
One to build, the other for parts as it’s a pretty cheap motor set at that price. Used it to upgrade the 42065 motors (totally recommend).

Point being, Amazon do (better) sales on these fairly often.

Did it actually make any substantial difference in speed?

According to this site, the Power Functions Medium motor (which is in the 42065 set) has the exact same peak RPM and very similiar torque output to the Power Functions Large motor in the 42095 set. Somehow it doesn't look like it'd be enough to really make a huge difference and Lego's gear trains in sets like these are always quite inefficient and waste a lot of power.

      • It didn’t make it noticeably faster but seemed to make a big difference to the torque. I have the rubber nubbins in the tracks and the thing can go up a smooth 45 degree surface now - it’s a beast. You have to adjust the frame a bit to take the bigger motors but I used that as an excuse to increase rigidity too. It had started to develop a bit of sag as the Medium motors were poorly suspended in the factory build.

The 42095 is more manoeuvrable and faster, but it’s a terrible climber due to the angle of attack on the tracks. I’d recommend the alternate build, then reverse the front and rear cogs on the tracks to improve the gearing. It looks more like the 65 then and isn’t popping wheelies all the time.

        • Could also be an element of the medium motors are a year old. So not exactly fair.

Well that's a pretty good improvement, but I'd wager the rubber is more responsible for that than the slightly better torque output of the PF Large motors.

Those plastic caterpillar track links have absolutely no grip. I miss the old rubber Technic treads, they actually had some climbing capability.

but it’s a terrible climber due to the angle of attack on the tracks.

Definitely. I have the 42065 myself and that thing gets caught on slightly thick rugs or towels, never mind going up any kind of incline.

My 42095 is still sitting unassembled in a closet; I might have to try your hack when I get some time, but I've found virtually all of the Power Functions sets to be quite disappointing in terms of speed and traction and simply throwing more PF motors at them usually ends up cancelling out any increased performance with the additional weight.

Same goes for the new Control+ motors, they just don't have enough grunt. The 4X4 X-treme Off-Roader (42099) might be faster than any previous Power Functions sets, but it's still pretty lacklustre compared to what you can achieve with BuWizz and SBrick, and even with the independent suspension and planetary drive, it's still has piss-poor climbing ability, a huge turning circle and can barely traverse Lego brick-sized obstacles.

Lego seem to have a fundamental design philosophy of never making motor-actuated sets too fast or too powerful.
