Kogan OBD II Car HUD $39.99 + $9.99 Delivery (Free Shipping with First) @ Kogan

131

This is a HUD (heads up display) that displays Speed, fuel consumption, engine revs, coolant temperature and other information on your windscreen so that you don't have to look down at your gauges while driving. I bought this in March the last time it was on Ozb, it works very well on my Nissan 370z. The display is powered by the OBD 2 port in the car, and turns off when the car is switched off. I have not experienced battery drain by leaving it plugged in. The speedometer is accurate straight out of the box for me, however the offset may need to be adjusted on other makes of cars (there is an option to change the offset). There may be a difference between the HUD and your speedo, which I found out is due to car manufacturers setting their speedos to read higher than actual. The unit works so well that I wanted to buy another last week, however the price was $159 then. Today Google alerted me of the price drop, bought one. Great way to save on speeding tickets, I reckon. Ensure that your car is OBD 2 compatible (most vehicles post 2009 are) ann that you know where your OBD 2 port is. You will need to run a cable from the port to the display.

You have to put some kind of plastic film onto your windscreen for it to work. Not too bad during night, very hard to see during day. Mine lasted a few months and died then.

    • Works for me without plastic film. Plastic film is supplied though. In very bright sunlight I have difficulty seeing it, however I have decided that on the few occasions that I cant see it properly, I will use the physical gauges, rather than putting a film on my windscreen.

    • The flim or the HUD unit died in a few months?

      • I think he means the unit.

          The wannabe HUD.

          • +3

@dosada: True that. However not all of us can afford the latest car model to enjoy the benefits of HUD

            • -2

@laser: I am driving an old Great Wall. I am far from having the latest car model, this HUD is just a waste IMHO.

              • @dosada: HUD is a gimmick I agree, unless you drive a car fast enough that you have no time to look at your gauges.

                • +5

@laser: I disagree that HUD's are a gimmick. I have a factory one in my car, and to be able to keep a closer eye on your speed without taking your eyes further off the road is a great benefit. Even more so in newer cars which have GPS and other functions in the HUD as well. The less time people spend not looking ahead the better.

                  • @robberbutton: Exactly, why I got it the first time around. I don't regret it at all. Now that I have got used to it, I "need" it on the missus' car.

              • @dosada: So this "wannabe" HUD would go great in your "wannabe" car.

        • It is possible that the unit dies in hot weather, because it has to be left on your dash. I got mine in March, so cant say I have tested it during the hotter months.

  • Really want a proper one like whats in my Mazda 3, connects with GPS navigation etc. Really invaluable. I bought one of these for my MX5 but it just has speed/tach on a really dodgy screen. Okay for this price I guess. Out of curiosity, have you never used GPS ever in a car that also gave your speed? This has been a thing for a really long time, to mostly make it so you can't blame the car manufacturer for speeding. If you change wheels/tyres etc it will affect this too.

    • My car unfortunately does not tell me the GPS speed, even though it has built-in satnav. Really annoying. Guess that's what you get for buying a car released in 2009.Also though I have not experienced the HUD on a late model Mazda 3, I had a loaner of a Mercedes C300 that did have HUD, however, I found the clarity of this HUD better than the one on the C300.

      • Oh wow, even my 2014 mazda 3 HUD is better than this odb hud, fully adjustable and great clarity/visibility.

When I said GPS, I just meant that if you use GPS on your phone while in your car, it will show all this information directly from the phone, including your GPS speed.

The Mazda 3 HUD (there are many that are better also), has speed/tacho/and turn by turn navigation.

        • I have stopped using my phone even on a cradle in the car. I only have 3 points left on my license and cant afford to lose my license, especially in these times when using public transport appears to be a nightmare due to social distancing regulations.

@laser: Geez what on earth are you doing……

            • @onlinepred: MLC that started off with a souped up HD Sportster and ended up with a 370Z.

              • @laser: :-(

Need to trade in for a mx5 ;-)

                • @onlinepred: MX5 is a beautiful car!

@laser: You can flat foot for ages, and still not be speeding. Helped a lot coming from a skyline haha

cheaper on ebay when you factor in 9.99 delivery

  • Is the cabling a mess/challenging to wire? Interested to get one as I always wanna have a HUD but not good at these in-car wiring stuff…at $40 if it last a year I would be ok…lolz

    • Its the same level of difficulty as plugging in a windscreen mounted satnav into your cigarette lighter port.

      • thanks, pulled the trigger…see how it goes..cheers

  • Can I use this with the Torque Pro app to monitor my DPF saturation levels?

lol wth this is a generic chinese product, its not 'well made' and its not 'high quality' - it won't do a phenomenal job. It definitely wasn't $160

This whole post feels like an ad.

I am not affiliated with Kogan in any way.

    Kogan Car HUD $39.99

Is this the version that displays a picture of Ruslan during boot up and shut down?

  • Lots of people here on ozbargain seem to hate kogan deals, wonder why

    • +1

I am not a fan of Kogan products usually. However this unit works reliably for me and has already saved me from losing my license, which is not difficult in a 370z.

        What happened mIsTa dRiFta?!

        • -1

I have not had any bad experience with Kogan personally. However, I am aware of the general apathy to Kogan on Ozb, and I usually avoid Kogan because of that. I am only posting this particular deal because of my own positive experience with this specific product.

          • +1

@laser: Missed a perfect opportunity to mention your car again. Rooky error.

            • @furiousgeorge: LOL, I luuuuv my car and its new enough that I still haven't got over it.

    • +3

Because most of their items are cheap no name crap that has been rebranded into the Kogan brand and is being sold for a few times more than from any other places that is selling the same items just without the Kogan name on them.

      • Yeah, nice try selling this for 159, I wouldn't buy it at that price.

    • +3

They literally sell chinese products for inflated prices. If you see a proper brand there, its overpriced - rarely you actually see a proper deal, and even then there's a catch.

      For example:

Air Purifier by Xiaomi 3H - went on sale on DICKSMITH (which is literally kogan with a fun name) but not on Kogan , while on kogan you could get free shipping with FirstMembership , you get 11-40$ shipping fees on DickSmith

Its a real hit and miss, but its ratio is like, 7% - 93% :^)

  • Some of kogans LEGO prices would make even the most hardcore Gumtree dreamer blush.

  • Could just go pick one up now from Jaycar: https://www.jaycar.com.au/obdii-speedometer-and-heads-up-dis…

One very important fact about this, its actually about the sticky non slip pad, these things ruin your cars dash, on hot days the sticky glue on these melt into your dash and you end up with a permanent mark on the dash where this once sat, and no chemicals or cleaning fluids remove this, its melted into the dash permanently, ruining the dash! How do i know this…because it happened to me with my car! All these non slip pads are the same! I would avoid using the supplied pad and use a safer non damaging method to securing it in place on the dash.

Just a comment I seen from a OBD 2 video installation on youtube, anyone experience this?

  • So I dunno why but I purchased one and it's ok functionally. My biggest gripe is the cable is on the wrong side for right hand drive cars. Bit annoying having cable stick out.

  • Back to 159.99, deal expired.

  • Mine reset after about 5 minutes of driving. Logged a ticket they asked me to reset the unit which I haven't done yet.
