  • that's a bloody cheap smartphone

    Great modem for $5.
Was popular last time at $5 - 8 months ago and wouldn't hesitate to buy at this price.

I was thinking about sending my old one to OfficeWorks for tech recycling. Its 4G speed is quite slow in today's standard.
$5 really re-enforces that it is really time to do so.

    • My E5573 just dead today.
With both green lights blinking and won’t reset.

      • Mine got an issue with the battery. It became swelling since last summer and I stopped using it

        • You can buy new batteries on ebay

        • The problem is when connected to the computer, it constantly charges and it can't work if you take out the battery. Stupid design, and nobody cares.

          • +1

@bargainparker: was never designed to be permanently attched to computer or operate 24x7 as a hot spot, hence the battery is to occasional use when no power is available, for 24x7 or long term powered use they have a USB version that acts as a WIFI hot spot.

Was informed by their engineer a few years ago when we were looking at 4G mobile options for mobile workforce.

            @bargainparker: https://www.instructables.com/id/Power-an-Android-Phone-With…

This is something you can do, all you need to do is remove the top part of the battery which is the BMS (battery management system) then solder the usb cable to it. Which is the same way as the battery is soldered to the BMS, make sure you check the polarity of the battery to solder the correct wire.

Don't bother with buying a replacement battery on ebay since most likely you will get an inferior/fake battery which is a fire hazard when you plug in 24/7 and unattended while not at home. It is also not cheap to buy a new battery and the same issue will happen again in just a few months.

Make sure you use a charger that is at least 1A output or better just use a 2A charger since if your charger is not providing enough power the device will be cut off hence it will just restarting itself.

This can apply to any old phone that you plan to use as a hotspot as well. Since there is no battery, there is no fire hazard. I am running my old phone as a hotspot this way.

Which store is this OP. I'm pretty sure only your that store got those deals.

    • A3 shows this price on WW website.

Edit: So does X Smart & X Spirit

Wasnt available at box hill or doncaster, melbourne.

    • Thanks for the heads up.

  • Can someone comment on how good these smartphones are?

    • +1

Compared to? What's "good" mean? Which one are you referring to?

    • +2

I like when someone asking for comment when the item is damn cheap or harder to obtain.

    • You need to pay me to use any of those.

      Don't get them.

    • Have a look at product review - they are all fairly shit give or take

    • I got the Optus X Play as a sign up spam phone, and it was so bad I returned it to Optus as 'faulty'. If you were lucky enough to successfully install one app on its small memory (took MANY tries), you would NEVER be able to run it properly. For example, the Uber app kept crashing on start up, and it would take 1+ minutes to even open the app if you got lucky…. But bring up keyboard, "Oh no you don't!"… crash and return to home screen.

      • Lel, I have a Telstra Tempo and the default notification sound is so grating it's almost painful. It's like they want it to be unpleasant to use.

  • Can someone let me know if these smartphones are locked to Optus?

    • +25

      to quote optus 'yes'

    • Yes, and don't even bother unlocking. Optus cripples most of their cheap prepaid phones to only be compatible with their network bands.

Do I risk my life driving in the storm to get these?

    • +1

      bargains dont wait!

    • +4

Calculate based on the value of your life. If that value is > $129 (which was the original RRP), then don't go. If it is less, then go.

  • Any thoughts on the Optus E5573 in 2020? Seems like it's unlocked so that's a plus

    • How did you get that it's unlocked? In the screenshot it's labelled as an "Optus Huawei E5573".

      • +6

        It's unlocked.

      • +2

Mine came unlocked, but that was a couple of years ago.

    • Still a great device

  • Is Optus E5573 unlocked?

    • +4

It's locked. I got mine unlocked free about a month ago as I have it as a backup. I needed it so I could test it using a Telstra and Vodafone sim and found they all max out in the range of 8 to 12 Mbps download. By range I mean that all peak at about 12, but over the day vary between 8 and 12 depending on a number of factors.

    • +4

It's locked, but it's quite easy to unlock. I got one long time ago and just google to unlock. I think this is where I got it unlocked.

  • Has anyone used the Optus E5573 with a TS9 antenna before?

Would be interesting to see if that improves the speed.

My MW41 with Telstra is delivering about 20Mbps atm, which is not bad.

    • I do, I use one of these at a beach house with an antenna to range a tower for years. An antenna did help the speed, although now it is less important as tower itself has been improved. It is capable of 150mbps although I rarely get really high speeds save for short bursts. Mine was bought from officeworks, it is unlocked but I use optus anyway.

  • got a Optus E5573s-606 from my local online said no stock sim card expired in Jan 19

  • +1

i hate it when Woolworths staff lie to you…. you ask them to check, they say they've got 3 in stock… you ask them to buy one, they act surprised and then all of a sudden 'cant find them under the counter'….

    • +6

In my local they said none in stock and refused to open the cabinet. I asked another staff member and they opened and I found 3 inside!

      • +1

often staff buy these killer deals for friends and family or sell on Ebay …. good luck and grab it if your store has them.

  • +1

I don't think any of these are available. You can add to cart, but as soon as you select a store, they're sold out. I checked all the major postcodes in my area and capital cities.

  • do you still get a Free $30 recharge applied when you activate included SIM. Offer ends 27/9/20. with these?

  • if Anyone know this Optus E5573 modem available any where in Sydney area ?

  • Thanks, OP. Managed to pick up the last E5573 modem.
It comes with a prepaid mobile SIM card. Not sure if it has any data plan on it.

    • Usually comes with 4GB to use in 14 days

  • tried two woolies no Optus E5573 $5 in stock. is their any stock in SEQ?

  • Damn, looks like I missed out on getting the Huawei E5573, cant find anything on there.
Can anyone confirm if they have in any Vic stores?

    • +1

you just have to try your luck at random. Just ask them to check in cabinet whenever you passed by a WW. If someone found it they've already bought it so there is no point asking here.
