Thanks OP, but it's usually at this price (900~950). Worthwhile bargain on this is probably below $800.

    • Nah during the last 6-12 months it's been a lot harder to find at this price

    • +3

Been looking at this machine last coupe of months. It hasn't gong below $900, this is probably the cheapest price on the market now. Lock down probably boosts the sale of this.

      • Yep, it's been about 12 months since the last $700 sale. In the meantime Breville have up"ed their RRP on both coffee machine and smart grinder. The low AUD won't help matters.

      • I bought it two months ago for 899

        • how are you finding it?

          • @dgrona44: Great. I could never get good results by using the 1-2 cup buttons in the beginning, so switched to manual. If you nail the grind (spend a few shots for each new bag of coffee testing) then you can get a perfect extraction. I aim for 30 seconds and 24ml give or take (bought some digital coffee scales from Campos). I'm having a lot more enjoyment making coffee these days.

With lock downs its been hard to get hold of machines (everyones making coffee at home now it seems), so don't expect drastic discounts for a while. I ordered a breville 878, and had to wait a month for it to come it, went on back order.

  • I got the black version from Harvey Norman for a touch over $800 a couple of months ago using 5% vouchers and talking them down over multiple live chats to $850. That was the lowest I could get them. I know ~$700 is the ideal price but was happy to pay the premium for the black.

    This is a good machine.

This machine has the capability to make as good coffee as $3000+ machines if you invest the time to learn to use it properly.
The $3000+ machines gives you brand name, aesthetics and durability over this machine.

    • +3

Bang for buck this machine is, but it is hardly durable. Great machine yes, but the solenoid, group head seal/collar and ball valve have life spans measuring 2-3 yrs. They're all user servicable, or you could get Breville to do it for you for ~30-50% of the price of a new machine. You could buy several BDB's for the price of a dual boiler Rocket, La Marzzoco or ECM but don't expect you'll be getting something as durable.

Agreed. Got mine 799 4 years ago. It is a 1000 ish machine and that’s it. It is nowhere near a 3000 dollars machine. The pressure , durability, playability and almost everything indicate this is an entry level machine and it is. To conclude, I would say this is almost a Best Buy if your budget is around 700-900. FYI mine pressure was so unstable once pass 2.5 years couldn’t bother to service it. Prepare to upgrade to r58 or la marzzoco

I am not sure where are you from but for most of the ppl here, a $900 machine is not an entry-level machine. maybe you should go back to your pro-level cafe world, we are talking about home use machine here.

@wangsk: I believe the feature set are what makes this Breville comparable to the far more expensive machines. 58mm portafilter, dual boilers with adjustable boiler temperatures and adjustable pre-infusion, stable temps at group head, volumetric measuring, auto-on/off timer, shot timer etc.
Even the far more expensive dual boilers don't often have these features. Of course the downside is that the Breville is built to a price which means that parts are of a lower quality and no doubt the reliability is not fantastic (bit of a gamble as to how long the machine will last).

I bought the original Dual Boiler in, maybe, 2011? Just after it was first released.

I've made over 6500 shots. Never had it serviced. Only run the cleaning tablet through when it asks me to.

        Still going strong.

  • Been waiting for this to go on sale at my local store TGG, and noticed they've recently marked it as a special order only: https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/breville-the-dual-boiler-espr…

Anyone know why this is? Are Breville discontinuing the stand alone dual boiler machine?

  • +3

good machine, but best get comfortable in opening it up to maintain it. i keep a bag of spare o-rings and have replaced the solenoid, pump and steam valve.

over 4 or so years which is fine, but next machine i go will be one with proper plumbing inside and not this plastic pipe stuff!

I have this one, had it for about a year now. I'm not a coffee drinker but my wife is and she also used to be a barista, she loves it and highly recommends it to anyone. I also like the Chai Latte and Matcha Latte she makes and the kids love the hot chocolate and babychinno. All round we are very happy with this.

I admire you - "I'm not a coffee drinker but my wife is and she also used to be a barista".
      Very tolerant wife.

I have been following the price of BES920 for a while. Sales have been much harder to come by over the last few months so this could be a decent-ish price if you want it now and can get hold of a discounted gift card. I wouldn't say there is much of a bargain about $899.

Got the black version about a month ago at Harvery Normal for $829, got another 7% off by purchasing a gift card from redeemyourgiftcard.com.au to bring it to $770. Considering it was the black version (which is much more rare) I was happy to pull the trigger. But not sure I would on this deal

  • In terms of reliablity we have had ours over 5 years and make at least 2 cups every day (7 days a week) apart from the steam wand leaking slightly (has for about 3 years) its been fault less and other then regular cleaning have had no repairs.

But would love to grab a spare at a good price as backup!

  • +1

Been hoping for this machine to drop below 800 to pull the trigger. Gutted as I had the chance to pick one up cheap from the Melbourne Breville outlet before it shut down, and didn’t.

    • Out of interest, how much were they going for there?

      • For some reason, i have 700 in my mind, but I also am not sure whether they were refurbed. I popped in there after a couple of beers at Fixation but at the time remembered they were significantly cheaper than HN. Gutted the Breville outlet has gone now.

  • My 5 year old BES920 started playing up recently, got a repair quote today for $500+.

Thought I had a win seeing this deal pop up, searched around and found Myer Ebay had this listed for $989 with Best Price Guarantee making it even cheaper. Just as I went to pull the trigger…no more Best Price Guarantee!!! Who could believe Ebay using these dodgy tactics!?!?

    • What are you going to do with the old one?
Asking for a friend (seriously). :)

      • $80 for the quote, would be happy to get rid of it for same price if anyone's interested for parts

        • I will PM your. :)

  • I am new to these, was thinking of buying the BES870, I know this one is a dual boiler(which I actually dn't know if that will make a difference to me) can anyone help me here please? Worth paying extra bucks for this one?

    Thanks.

    • BES870 has a grinder builtin while this dual boiler needs a separate grinder that will cost you extra couple of hundred dollars.

      • My coffee machine died recently. Glad I have a separate grinder

    • IMO, if you don't know what a dual boiler is… then you probably don't need to spend the extra. My Sunbeam EM7000 (RRP 800 or so) just died. THermoblock tech.
I want this one as. a step up and don't want to spend 2K plus on a Italian or German machine, however I am still going to wait for it to at least have a 7 in front of the price tag.

David Jones has a Sunbeam EM700 for under $500 at Highpoint S.C. (Melbourne). One only in the box, I would buy that if I were you, it can froth and extract coffee at the same time.

BTW. They had this Breville for $827.00 online at HN in March this year. Ill try and post the screenshot if I can remember how to upload it.
