  • Can you shuck the drive? and if so I wonder if it is worth the trouble?

    • Why would you? You can get an MX500 for a similar price, it's likely the drive inside is a terrible 860 QVO.

      • Yep, only worth it if there is a worthwhile drive inside to rescue. (and the challenge of doing it :))
Will have to look further to see what they put inside.

        • I just had a look and it seems the T5 has TLC NAND, however I don't know whether it has a DRAM cache. Also the SSD itself is in a weird form factor.

I have an old iMac with a standard HDD that is slow and HOT. So, I installed OSX to one of these little T5 drives (a 250GB) and even though this iMac's only got USB2, it's still heaps faster!

One day. I'll take the time to remove the screen and put a proper SSD inside, but until then, this does the job well enough.

      FYI

      • How did you instal operating system on that? Do you keep this drive plugged through usb port all the time?

        • Yes, I keep it plugged in the back. The drive is so tiny, I just used a Velcro dot to stick it to the back of the iMac case.

I installed it from a USB thumb drive and then chose the T5 as the startup disk. It works perfectly.

          ;)

    • no …..it’s custom form factor so that they can make it small and it also has the usb C interface. it’s not an m2 nvme inside.

  • Funny. That link shows it as on special for $129?

    Weird.

    • Likewise. I wonder where $99 came from?

      • Could be stores special.

I saw the T5 500GB on the clearnance bench at the good guys Marsedn Park, nsw for $129. $99 would be a ripper of a deal

  • Whats the best SSD external case ?

    • +1

depends if it’s for 2.5” sata, m2 sata or m2 nvme drive, and they are all physically larger than a samsung T5 drive.

i own 2 T5 drives and wouldn’t buy a separate drive and case it again. my cased drives are because they are left over from upgrades e.g laptop from 500gb to 1 tb, etc.

the T5 are very small and also very fast when on USB C interface.
