  • great lens. Bought for 189 a few years ago.

  • I am looking to buy the Canon EOS 200D II bundled with the kit lense and this one included but I think it will work out cheaper to buy this one stand alone at $249 and then just buy the EOS 200D II when it next comes on promotion with just the kit lense.

70-200 is ii is way better.

also 10 times expensive, if it matters.

      • +2

being ozbargain, yes it does matter

    • Regular consumers wouldn't dream of spending that much on a lens, completely different market audience…

      • Then might as well go with a point and shoot as they will unlikely able to use the potential of a DSLR.

I have seen photos from noobs with DSLR, they could have done better with iphone. Composition just outright sht.

UNless your willing to drop 3k on a telephoto you might as well get a P&S? No way.

Lots of people have no need for such an expensive telephoto. I have a kit telephoto and a far more expensive 2.8 zoom for the range i use 95% of the time. While slower the kit (an similar alternatives) telephoto can still get decent results, especially if good light.

dslr gives you big lens, so captures lots of light so, less noise and so gives you the ability to take better pictures than with a phone technically , composition you can’t buy, it’s learned.

Oh please. Have you actually used a 55-250 STM lense? If you want a super shallow depth of field, go elsewhere. But this is a sharp lens and you can still get ok separation at the long end for portraiture if you bring the subject close. The bokeh isn't my favourite but this is a very capable lens. A lot of people don't want to shoot shallow depth of field and f/2.8 all day.

        • How does using a DSLR change composition

          • @thomas901: No idea. Guessing they cant use the view finder properly.

Also know many bought an entry dslr and let it sit around catching dust - they are essentially worthless in the secondhand market. And most people impulse buy entry dslr dont follow through - essentially creating an additional piece of landfill.

If beginners looking for a camera with control the 1" sensor PnS makes a good toy. I used to take my G1X together as a supplement to my 5D with 24-70 70-200L sigma 14mm and two speedlights when travelling. When going ino narrow caves, the G1X with a speedlite was pretty decent.

  • back when amazon made a substantial price error on expensive camera lens and still honoured it.

    • And no one post it here…

It was US addresses only. It was such a big mistake it would've been more than worthwhile to order several cameras and lenses from Australia then fly to LA to collect them and still be thousands of dollars in front!

  • I paid 150 for used one ( and a lpe17 battery). I love it, great one.
It’s normal price is no way 500. I was looking for it and frequently found new one in 250-350 range.

Still a kit lense. If you really need this, better to get used ones under $200.

    • A kit lens but the sharpest Canon lens anywhere in it's price range

  • +1

I paid about ~$120 for a used one off ebay, $250 is ok though for warranty & knowing that its had no history of abuse. Good lens but definitely not worth above $250

    BTW, it’s lens, not lense.

Hmm they were $199 on previously

  • some advised given by others
invest in a good lens because you can always upgrade on a better camera

i would reconsider getting white ring lens, wouldnt get it just because it is half price

  • Check DPreview (or Ken Rockwell) for review before committing. https://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/lenses/55-250mm-stm.htm

Better off getting a Sigma/Tamron with same focal length for similar $.
