Should I Buy a 75" or 86" TV?

Hi All,
I'm thinking about finally upgrading to 4k and retiring my beloved 70" Sharp Aquos. I'm contemplating of getting a 75" or 86" LG from Bing Lee, however unsure if the price difference of almost double the cost is worth it? My distance is 3 meters from my couch due to my old Terrance so I calculated that 80"ish should be my ideal size but thought I'd get some inputs of what the ozb community think as I do value everyones experience and the knowledgeable who've done the same upgrades or have experience.
To be honest Im not in a rush as still love my TV, the money isnt the issue but also want best bang for buck and was hoping for a good EOYF sale. Lastly I know there is 8k but know that's ridiculously priced atm, lack of content and probably won't be upgrading to 8k or the next iteration and keep the 4k for at least 5 years.
My primary purpose is watching movies, shows and playing games.
Thank you in advance for any opinions.

Buy whatever you want for your use that fits your budget.

86" is ~30% larger display area than a 75". Does that matter to you for what you use it for? How would it fit in your room? Is your 70" not adequate enough? Can you spend the saved money on something else? Upgrade audio surround system maybe? It's a really odd question to ask random people.

    • I feel that the bezels of my current TV just totals the 75" so was just worried if I might feel it wasn't a substantial upgrade, but I know the 4k itself is an upgrade and HDR for PC Gaming, Ps4 and Xbox will be worth it. 70" is adequate enough because I'm so accustomed to it in my living room, but in my bedroom it's 55" and that is adequate enough for a bedroom
I already have a home theatre setup up as I love watching movies etc and having the immersion. It did cross to mind to skip 4k and wait till 8k drops to sub $5k for either 75" or 86", but don't think that will happen for 3 years. I also feel that with everything else eg phones etc. Technology moves to fast and will be a perpetual cycle of waiting to upgrade coz of the next upcoming technology.
Yep odd to ask people but hoping people who have upgraded also can comment from their experience.

Sounds like an upgrade to a 75" 4K TV and ATMOS surround system is ideal for you then.

Can even use some of the saved difference getting a PS4 Pro (4K gaming with HDR is a huge step up) and/or await the PS5 near end of the year.

    69 is the sweet spot…

I sit 3.4m from an 85" tv and it's just borderline..

16:9 may have you struggling to focus but for 21:9 it looks sweet.

My wife always says bigger is better, go for more inches

    • +3

that is because she is not satisfied with what she has at the moment

    • One inch longer, one inch stronger. Go hard

Agreeing with everyone that posted. Buy the biggest you can afford. We used to have a 75 inch and now we got a 82 inch and I say the bigger the better. :) FYI, we sitting 4m away from the TV.

    YES AND YES

You never hear someone saying "This tv is too big" after they've got it

    • I have. I bought a 60 inch for a 3x4m room. Seating is along the 4m so viewing distance was 1.5m.

Here's the female version of this dilemma. An acquaintance just sent this to everyone on her whatsapp contact list. Since I can't care less ( considering I barely know her), I'm just going to pick a random comment on this thread to send her.

In case you're wondering how it went :

Me (paraphrasing @skid) : Hey! The gem will look smaller after a month. Go the biggest. :)

Her: Hmmm…I'm not sure who you are but you make sense wise stranger! Shrinkage is real. Go big or go home!πŸ’ƒπŸ»πŸ’ƒπŸ»πŸ’ƒπŸ»πŸ’ƒπŸ»πŸ’ƒπŸ»

Her(the next day) : My boyfriend said he can only afford the small one :( Will you buy me the big one ?😁

Me: A small engagement ring is better than no engagement ring.

      Her: oh :(

      I hope this helps, OPπŸ˜‚

  • How will it fit in your room. Make sure it’s not so big that you can’t see the whole screen without turning your head. It sucks sitting in the front row at the cinema.

Check the optimum screen size to distance to couch ratio.
