If You Only Had One Camera?

I am probably going to sell my fab SLR camera and all its accessories. Combined they are worth quite a bit. But I almost never use them now. They are impractically heavy and bulky.

I am thinking of replacing with a compact style camera, something like the classic Leica.

Any recommendations/likes?

Yes, I know I can use my phone, and I do. But I really miss having a viewfinder in many light conditions.

Not sure about zoom requirement. If a really good lens, enlargement and cropping should cover lots of situations. Or, is there a pocketable camera with an interchangeable lens?

Looking for recommendations (and not a phone!).

  • Or, is there a pocketable camera with an interchangeable lens?

    Not really.

What's your budget? Sony ZV-1 or Sony RX100 series?

  • MFT. Check out Olympus E-M10iii or E-M5iii with EZ14-42. My E-M10ii with that lens fits into a jacket pocket. The E-M5iii is just a little bit bulkier

  • leica M10 monochrome and summilux 35mm f1.4

ahhh what dreams are made of

    • "Hey big spender! Dig this blender!"

      • i've been quoted 20K

it would be still too far off even if i sold all my Fuji gear

    • Waiting for the M10D Monochrom, so that not only do I lose colour, but an LCD screen as well :D

  • I looked at the Sony RX100 or its predecessor some years ago and found it too small in my hand, too liable to be dropped. Something like this? Haven't had one in my hands. Fuji x100v. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7d5jul1iydw.

  • I love the Olympus 12 - 100 f/4. I use it on an EM-1.1, but there are smaller bodies it fits. Good length of range, obviously not the best depth of field but it works for me. Olympus lenses fit on both Olympus and Panasonic bodies, might be something worth looking into.

Not an easy fit into the pocket, but a great, light set up at a lower weight than full frame.

  • I used the EOS M5 (EVF built-in) for some time before giving that to my wife, and updating to the EOS M6 II.

Normally use it with the 22mm lens, but also have/use the EF-EOS M adaptor when I want to use nicer lenses with it.

  • +1

    Fujifilm X100V.

  • Sigma dp Merrill.

  • RX100 (either the VA or VII depending on what you prefer for zoom range vs lens speed) or LX100 II would be the ones on my list. Slightly lower on the price scale would be the panasonic compacts LX10 or TZ110 or TZ220. I would probably be happy to have any of these as a solo camera.

You can get the LX100 with the leica branding if you want, too (It is literally the same camera but with the red dot). It's called the D-Lux 7 and only costs double :D .

  • there are rumours around that the Sony RX100 VIII compact camera may be released around October 2020
