Possum Removal in South East Melbourne

Can anyone please suggest a cheap possum removal service for a one storey house, tiled roof in the south east please (Melbourne). The possum is in my roof and it’s been so frustrating to have them share the roof!! I’m not sure where the entry points are.
I looked online and got a quote for $380 which I think is quite a bit (??)
Thanks in advance! :)

Stick a light up there. They get annoyed at getting no sleep and bugger off somewhere else.

    Seriously, it works.

For a second there it seemed as though you recommended to burn the house down lol.

If flaming torches are your thing then by all means have at it, old chap.

      • Yea I thought the same :)

    • Wouldn’t the possum move to another area of the roof cavity? Silly question but what type of light? My access to the roof cavity is probably at least 6 metres away from where I suspect it to be and I’m a little unsure what type of light should one put in there.

little unsure what type of light

        Ordinary lamp, nothing special.

I just ran an extension cord up there (no power socket in the roof) and hung a couple of bulbs up.

You just need to make sure there are no dark areas, Mr Possum will leave after a few days of no sleep.

        • Thanks @DC
Will give this a go! Fingers crossed.

@dpp: I left the lights up there for another week or whatever after he left in case he decided to come back (plus I was too lazy to go and get them). Never returned. went to annoy someone else.

Was going to find the hole and block it, but y'know, lazy.

            • @D C: Haha, dw I get ya… I’m exactly the same.
Finally heard it come back this morning (after two days) so I know he’s definitely here now.

Stay outside at night and find how it gets out- probably near a tree
    Block the hole

    • Thanks qwerty! Time to stalk him tonight (didn’t hear him last night… I think he has two homes)

Friend of mine actually bought a cage from a pet shop and trapped a possum that was around his house. He then took the cage to a park about 10mins from his house and released it. I was actually surprised at how he did it

This is illegal… Captured possums must be released on the same property they are captured on (or killed by a vet).

    Yep.What Querty said.

As a wildlife rescuer if you do remove the possum another may well find it's way in. Where there is one possum there will certainly be another close by.

As it's in the roof it's likely to be a brushtail.

Can't answer for Victoria but in NSW it must be released within 50 metres as they are extremely territorial. .

As for being KILLED by a Vet that is illegal as ALL native animals are protected unless a permit has been issued for culling or a dangerous animal.

  • I had a possum in my roof, I had to wait until it climbed down at about 10pm then board up the hole with a piece of ply and some nails. Then it found a spot in the roof over my verandah so I basically had to do the same again, it got the message eventually and moved somewhere else.

    • How big is the hole? I have several different possums visiting top of roof. They hiss outside my windows. Need to be prepared.

      • The whole was probably about 30cm x 30cm, they can sneak into quite small spaces, or even if there is a small hole they will break it and make it bigger.

        • I tried looking for a home but couldn’t find it. Must be a really small gap

If You are going to get a professional to do it, check if they will possum proof the roof before the relocated it. As others have said, they can’t legally relocate far away so the possum will be straight back otherwise.

  • My understanding is that there are only a couple of professionals
    Peter the Possum Man
    Paul the Possum Man
something like that; not sure if they are related.

As others have said, make sure that they will block the entry/exit points of your roof space as part of their service. We used one of them years ago; worked at the time.

  • Invite someone who likes soup. They might try the combination and the Covid-20 will be born.
