Canon 1000D Twin Lens Kit + Extras $638.85 + Shipping

41

Thought this might be a better deal for those considering the $399 Single Lens Kit posted earlier and cannot get a price match. Comes with a 75-300mm telephoto lens which is worth $200+ alone (in addition to the 18-55m lens) plus a bag, wired camera controller, cleaning kit, and a DVD.

It's also $643 at Dick Smith if you don't want the extra stuff.

  • The Canon 75-300mm f/4-5.6 isn't considered a particularly good lens, but then again it's a one-model-old beginner's DSLR, I suppose for anyone considering it it's pretty decent. They appear to be selling the lens alone for under $130 + post although it's not in stock.

Seems like a pretty decent price for local stock with local warranty and a couple of included goodies, even if it is an old model.

  • the 1000D is a really old camera now

better off with a 550 or something newer

    • You won't even get a grey Kiss X4/550D single lens kit at this price now that the Aussie dollar's dropped, although it is a lot better value…

  • I was keen until I read this model does not shoot video.
You need to go up to the 500D

    • You won't see stock of the 500D around, it's been superseded twice. You want a 550D or a 600D.

75-300mm is not worth 200+ by a long shot

Also, the included 18-55 is non-is and optically vastly inferior to the is version. FYI this kit could be had for 599 at HN.

    • Oh, I didn't realise it was different. I guess it isn't that great of a buy then. Thanks for the info.

  • how about comparison with pentax kx ?

    • +2

In a nutshell Kx is a better performing camera, but canon is a more appealing brand.

      • in depth review here…. good camera in its class, but it's a deal breaker for me when you cant see where the autofocus points are focusing on through the view finder. that's a feature that should be mandatory in any DSLR camera.

  • Does anybody knows good price to buy this SLR with the IS lens?

If you have chosen to use a Canon or Nikon SLR, you have made a decision that you want photos of a quality that a kit lens is incapable of producing. There is no point whatsoever in owning a kit lens for a Canon or Nikon SLR - and there is no time when a kit lens is worth using.

Any recent SLR body from Nikon or Canon is capable of producing great shots - even a bottom of the range superseded model like the 1000D.

However it will be much much harder to get great shots from ANY SLR body if you are using a cheap kit lenses.

If you are bothering to spend the money on a good camera body - an SLR - using a kit lens on it is counter-productive - they undermine the high quality capability of the actual SLR camera body.

As I wrote in the thread of the excellent 1000D price of $399, if you find a good offer on a Canon or Nikon body with a 18-55mm kit lens, it might be worth seeing if you can get the dealer to swap the kit lens for the similarly priced Nikon or Canon 50mm f/1.8 prime lens (i.e. non-zoom) produced by either Canon or Nikon. These lenses are cheaper-feeling plastic lenses, but have surprisingly good optics producing great results - leading them to be very well reviewed.

      And you're negging this because?

      • Oops! My explanation above obviously wasn't long enough….

Very keen to hear dissenting points of view though. (Sorry, Kheob!)

        • On the contrary, actually. Yet it still does not explain why you're negging this deal. Are you sure you're not just holding a grudge because of this? http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/53594

It's OK if you are; some of us can't take criticism well.

        • +2

Hi Kheob. I'm satisfied that reasons for my neg are sufficiently explained above. Sorry you don't like them, or agree with them.

In the other 1000D thread I summarised my perspective:

None of the Nikon or Canon kit-lenses can match the photo-quality
that their SLR bodies can provide. Any user paying even 1 cent
to own a kit-lens is compromising the SLR quality standard which
          they self-evidently aspire to.

So I am very clearly prejudiced against the kit-lenses available as options with Nikon and Canon SLR's. I would be delighted to be proved wrong in this prejudice.

Whereas I note a number of neg's on my comment above I'm keen to hear responses to the content of it - to critique my line of thinking. I think in your posts you're good at explaining your rationale.

I hope I'm not a grudge-bearer due to disagreement of ideas on OzB! If it's a biggie then I'm happy to withdraw my neg. I just think that I've offered a valuable perspective on kit-lenses.

Note that earlier today on the other 1000D thread, whilst disagreeing with aspects of some of your thinking I had given your comment a +ve to make clear that I'm not your 'negging stalker':
          http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/54275#comment-616831

Note the other recent disagreement of ideas where I stated that I agreed with your perspective: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/53281?page=3#comment-602214

So my apologies if my statements have lead you to perceive that I don't 'take criticism well'. I'll try to work on that…

        • I had to ask because you gave the same reasons on the other thread as you did here and negged this one. I saw no other reason for the neg. Anyway, thanks for confirm you're not one of the users who have been negging my comments.
