Best Apple upgrade from iPhone 6

Hi guys,

I want to upgrade from my current iPhone 6 to a current Apple model but I haven't been following the iPhone market since I bought my current one. I bought the iPhone 6 outright in May 2015; since then it's never missed a beat, never had an issues, always operating pretty fast and does almost everything I want. My wife has the same model and we just both like the devices. We have changed the batteries once, but I think that's pretty good for the age. They just work flawlessly. I'm a computer programmer by trade and so fairly "into" computers so my device get a lot of use.

The 5+ year old camera technology lets it down, and they are slowing down a little bit.

Just wondering if anyone here has done a similar upgrades recently and has any recommendations.

I'm chasing a 128gb and my wife a 64gb.

Thanks!

    Iphone 11

    I was on Iphone6
and upgraded to iPhone 11 128gb on the 24month no interest plan from apple

    • From Apple? So you buy the phone outright and pay them monthly instalments with no interest?

      • Yes there is no interest it's the price of the phone/ 24 month (+ I think $4.95/month account fees)

can pay early and get it done

        • Interesting, never heard of that before. Thanks

        • +12

So that makes it into $118.8 of monthly fees for 2 years…

Sales guy: Alright, how do we trick people into getting the phone in monthly installments and charge them interest?
Marketing guy: Just say "NO INTEREST!!!1" and create a $5 monthly fee under a different name so they think they pay no interest?
Sales guy: Bloody genius! Expect a promotion soon!

Reminds me of Flight Centre and their "no online booking fees!!!111"

          • +2

@Blue Cat: yeah but I also have a MacBook worth 2k so paying $118 per 2 years for 3.5k of stuff is equivalent to 1.7% interest which I think is fine

            • +3

@barozgain: Buy more, save more. Marketing guy is smarter than you think.

                @afoveht:

Marketing guy is smarter than you think.

                I think it's a win-win situation

I didn't pay upfront for stuff I needed anyway and he got the sale

                • @barozgain: Yeah, you might not be the intended target for the marketing guy.

          • @Blue Cat: $5 per month isn't much and its still a much better option than going on a long contract. Pay it off sooner to minimise those fees. I'll have mine paid off by August so less than $40 in fees all up.

Compares well to other financing options I feel.

        • hold up. but this will affect your credit rating, will it not?

          • +1

@jackthefrost: Sure but that's what it's there for, right? No point keeping a positive score if you're not going to use it, else what's the point.

It can also benefit you though. Having tons of credit you never use can be detrimental too as you appear to creditors to be untested. Whereas, if you have some credit with a consistent history of paying it off on-time, then you're more likely to be viewed favourably as a safe option and get more credit.

          • @jackthefrost: Well its credit so obviously yes. But its hardly massive amounts of credit so its unlikely to have a material effect unless you don't pay on time.

    • Did the same when buying an 11 for my wife at Christmas.

Apple do it thru Creditline who are part of Latitude finance (same company as the 28 degrees credit card), so you need to apply and get approved for their card. Quick and easy process via the Apple website. 2 years interest free with $4.95 per month account fee. I have about $400 left to pay it off so will be done soon.

Most iphone 11 deals were on 3 year contracts so this is a much better option. Switched her from the $59 per month Optus plan she was on with her previous iphone 8 two year contract (which itself was a great deal at the time) to Aldi's $25 per month plan which has better Telstra coverage and similar data, therefore the $34 per month saving is helping to pay for the new phone.

    iPhone SE (2nd)

One rear lens is a letdown.

Yeah I'm looking for a better camera and one with "depth" (two focus points) is a must I think. I've seen the results, it looks good.

Se2 or wait for iPhone 12

    • Any idea when they're coming out? I'm not in a desperate rush, our existing phones work fine. I thought I might catch a EOFY deal somewhere is all

      • iPhone 11S/12 should be Sept/Oct. Not too far off now so suggest wait.

    • Agreed. Waiting for the iphone 12 is a more viable option and rumour is iphone 12 (5.8 or 5.9 inches) will be the cheapest.

iPhone SE2 seems quite promising at under $700, hardly budget but that's what you get with Apple ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

It's so dated looking, like an old designer bag that was once on trend. Suggest OP to wait for iPhone 12 or get the 11, unless he wants to stare at the same looking phone like the iphone 6 for the next few years.

      • It depends on how much OP wants to spend really. If OP is willing to pay the flagship price then the 11 or 12 is right up their alley, if not then the SE2 is really the only offering from Apple.

Each new Apple device has offered a decent bump in SoC performance (A9, A10, A11, A12, A13, and the soon to be released A14).
However, camera quality increases have been less pronounced.
And battery life hasn't increased unless the capacity is also increased.

So depends on your usage/where your priorities lie:
    - want bad battery life: get the iPhone SE2 (or iPhone 6S/7/8)
    - want bad processor: get the iPhone 7 Plus (or 6S/Plus)
    - want bad camera: get the iPhone 8 (or 6S/7/Plus)

…if you want something that's decent all-round, get the iPhone 8 Plus… and get one Used/Refurbished for better value.
I actually wouldn't recommend you to get a device worse than the 8+, so best to avoid the (iPhone SE2, Xr, 8, 7+, 7, 6S+, 6S).

…the iPhone 11 is not too bad, just not great priced.
…the iPhone X (used) is not bad priced, just not great phone.
If you want something better than the iPhone 8 Plus, I recommend you look to getting an iPhone XS/11 in either Regular/Max sizes.

…the iPhone X (used) is not bad priced, just not great phone.

Explain? It's by far the best iPhone I've had and only one that I've kept for 3 years without annual upgrade since the 3G and it's been rock solid ever since and doesn't skip a beat. (Yes, I upgraded each new main series model since the 3G to the X.)

The XS and 11 series have certainly been a disappointment in evolution but looking forward to 11S/12 upgrade.

The iPhone X is basically an iPhone 8 Plus, in a different body. But it stupidly commands a higher price on the used market. So I'm right in calling the iPhone 8 Plus a "good phone" by proxy the iPhone X is also a "good phone" but it is definitely NOT a "great phone".

        Why?
Comparing the camera performance to newer devices, leaves you disappointed. And I'm talking about the Main Sensor here. The processor has aged better, but still is lacking since its using the older 12nm lithography (aka "10nm") instead of the modern 8nm lithography (aka "7nm").

In case you were wondering, the best model variant to be on was the "S" range. Then Apple moved to a different strategy. Eg:
        Nokia N95/RIM Torch/HTC TyTNII
iPhone 3GS (skip the iPhone 2G and iPhone 3G, rough around edges)
iPhone 4S (skip the iPhone 4, Apps not optimised for resolution)
iPhone 5S (huge benefits to skip the iPhone 5/5C)
iPhone 6S Plus (bendgate fixed, has OIS, big processor uplift)
iPhone 8 Plus (last model with TouchID and 3D Touch)
        iPhone 12 Pro (postulating)

You're impressed your iPhone X has lasted you for the 2-and-half years, but you would have been equally impressed with the iPhone 8 Plus in that instance. For you, it's not quite worth it upgrading to an iPhone XS/11 Models, you're probably better served waiting for the iPhone 12 models being released soon.

  • I would suggest to go for the 11 Pro, it has beefier specs and has an excellent camera. Also, since it is smallest of the 11 line up, it will easy for you to upgrade to from a 6.

Also, if you are not in a hurry, wait for September for the next iteration of iPhone, but don’t expect huge changes, probably a face lift and an upgraded chip.

  • Just did the same for my wife from a 6

Got her the X because it’s the first of the ‘portrait’ double cameras, unless you go the Plus size models.

You can get a used 64gb for $550-600 on eBay in good nick

We’re both really impressed with the camera

  • I would recommend finding a sealed in box XS or XSMax. Failing that a near new one. This phone is the most reliable and future proof phone they ever made. Improvements in the 11 and SE2 are incremental and they don’t have 3D Touch. I usually upgrade every year to top of the line phones but having an XSMax is more than I need and will need for the foreseeable future. I can’t fault it. I had the X but the S version ironed out the few kinks it had. It has to be the best phone they have made so far and entry level price now is very affordable. If your 6 kept you happy for 5 years then this is the phone for you now at the price.

  • I just upgraded from iPhone 8 to iPhone SE 2020, choosing the 128GB version. I am waiting for my 8 to be received for trade-in, which should reduce the cost of buying outright from Apple Store by $220. It's great. The same processor as the 11, without the size (I have smallish hands for a woman). Does not have Face Recognition (and I'm not interested in it). Very happy customer here.

    • Should of sold the 8 privately, $220 is ripoff. Or even mobile monster would of payed more.

  • I upgraded from iphone 6+ to an iphone 8+ 256gb from kogan for $999 - new grey import) came with a usb 3.0 kogan charger but I use an adapter on the supplied apple charger. sold the 6+ on ebay for $206 (less another 25 bucks ebay commission fee) so it cost me around $600 bucks. I want a proper home button and a bigger screen so the new SE is not for me anyway.

  • In March I went from the SE to Google Pixel 4. I was somewhat reluctant to move from Apple, but at the time Apple didn't have much stock and neither did anyone else. I would have bought the iPhone 11 as it was getting great reviews pretty well everywhere I looked.

The move was easier than I thought it would be . The Pixel is doing great and the OLED screen is also great. I do find the calendar less friendly and I can no longer create an event from a text. Google maps is so much better on this device than on my Apple or my husband's Samsung galaxy.

Android has been noted to be slow on updates, but with a Google phone, as soon as it's out you have it available to you.

  • I bought a refurb iPhone SE 16GB 64GB Jan 2019. It was all I needed - I'm not a 'power user'. The warranty ran out, the screen started cracking in 3 separate places without being dropped or bent. I asked the supplier to help, they were decidedly not interested. For me, the iphone se 2020 (or whatever it's called) - but it'll def. be brand new - looks right. My 'cracked' SE has lots of higher-priced, bigger phone specs, so battery charging and usage are excellent. Is this an option for Keegs too?

  • iPhone SE (Gen 2). Same size as the iPhone 6, just about 0.2 - 0.5mm larger than the iPhone 6, hardly noticiable, can definately fit into the jeans pocket or any pockets if that's the preference.

Already with Optus, so went on their Apple promotion, 2 year contract renewed, more data than previous and get a new phone. All in all, about $1-$1 savings buying outright vs contract after 24 months.

ONLY downside, you lose the 3.5mm headphone jack… so either wireless headphones are lighting plug which will won't allow you to charge the phone when juice is low.

For me, the change is same size phone, lose the headphone jack, gain newer chipset (faster app response i hope), newer camera, higher capacity (64Gb,128Gb vs 64Gb,128Gb,256Gb).

edit - Camera was not a priority on my preference, single lens good enough. Can use a compact digicam for travel pics, just my preference.

  • Depends on your budget and what you’re after.
Low budget with decent camera - SE2
Unlimited budget with best available camera - iPhone 12 if you can wait for it.

Either one could last you at least 5 years from iOS lifecycle POV.

I have upgraded from 6s to X in Sep last year coz I couldn’t justify paying full price for the 11 Pro! In hindsight, I probably should have bitten the bullet and went for the 11 Pro. The X is still a good phone but it’s neither the best nor the worst and I might have upgrade again in less than 5 years.
