Recently lost my Dive Torch and was looking for replacements with 21700 batteries to go with it, and came across this "flash sale"

A review by Lygte-info shows these cells have good capacity, and can be used in high current applications up to around 30 Amps, but you might not be able to safely pull the full 40 Amps they're labelled for.
https://lygte-info.dk/review/batteries2012/LiitoKala%2021700%204000mAh%20Lii-40A%20(Yellow)%20UK.html

At ~AUD $7 each, they are less than half the price of the equivalent Samsung INR21700-40T 30A, without the brand name to go with it of course.

The deal improves the more you buy too.
selecting 4pcs, the price per battery comes to AUD $5.55
selecting 10pcs, the price per battery is only AUD $5.20

~Best of all, the usual killer for Li-Ion batteries to Australia is shipping, which in this case is free, if slow at 15-35 days.~

Gearbest appear to have changed the shipping price from Free (yay!) to ~AUD $22 (Aww), this is flat across all size options
While this means the 1 and 2 piece packs will no longer be price competitive, a 4 pack and bigger are still good value

If you are looking for cheap 18650 batteries, they are also available at the same storefront
https://www.gearbest.com/batteries---railway/pp_300997126903…
USD $3.19 / AUD $4.71 each, or as low as USD $2.5 / AUD $3.68 in a lot of 10
I cannot find any reports on the quality of these batteries though, so your mileage may vary

Those linked 18650's looks soooooooo similar to Samsung 30Q's, awesome deal if they are in fact

  • Bought 6 Samsung INR18650-30Q for $39 on ebay a month ago.

    • +4

      They were probably fake

      • I am not sure. Looks genuine. Here is the link. I used them to replace all my solar power lights batteries.

        • You can't know without testing them.

  • +4

Here's a more comprehensive test at BLF with associated comments in the forum post. They seem decent for the price depending on your use case.

    • Amusingly, the OP of that forum post is the author of the site i linked to.

Check the footer of the post, you will see he links to his website at https://lygte-info.dk

Might swap a few dead cells out on my car’s battery pack

    • What car do you have?

  • What is the size difference between 21700 and AA size batteries? I searched https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_battery_sizes but still don't have a clue.

Can 21700 batteries replace AA size batteries?

    • +1

Click Images, and you see the visual difference: https://www.google.com/search?q=21700+and+AA+size+batteries&…

      21700 is a lot bigger

      • Wow, definitely not for devices using AA batteries.

        • +1

          different voltage as well

        • +2

The numbers relate to the diametre and length. These batteries are 21mm dia and 70mm long hence 21700, 18650's are much more common and are 18mm dia and 65mm long. I have an FT03 which takes 26650's which are, you guessed it, 26mm dia and 65mm long. ( I forget the significance of the last digit)

          • +1

            @Flyerone:

            last digit

            0 = cylindrical

    • +1

      '#notsureifserious'

You have bigger issues if your thinking is literally "are these just better AA batteries I could use instead?"
      (i.e. you'd kill your device)

      • +1

Well, they look similar, until you see them next to each other and see the size diff.

      • +2

Legitimate question. Battery sizing is confusing at the best of times if you're not familiar with how it works. The average person is so used to thinking 'AA' when they see a smallish cell with a positive terminal that it's easy to confuse them.

    • AA battery is 14500 battery so it's different to 21700 battery

      • +1

Also, 14500 has a very different voltage to AA…

  • Thanks OP
Bought 6 of 21700s, 10 of 18650s and the Lii-S6 charger as well

    • No Problem

Hope they all work well for you

  • I want eneloops on salee!!

  • Nice batteries.
Would've bought some if I didn't have a half-disassembled Workzone battery on my garage table already :P

Don't have enough other devices to justify it … hmm or then again … lol

    • What size batteries? The workzone batteries contain piddling 1500mah batteries.

      • The tool specials are always 4Ah so 2000's.
Aldi specifically they are Samsung 20Qs, not that I'm too fussed on the brand (just to not exclude Ozito here).

  • Watch this video before you buy cheap battery made in china.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMZuHMlRw_0

    • Liitokala are a big brand name

    • You don't have to watch this video to know these Chinese made batteries have inflated capacity. The highest reliable capacity for a 18650 battery is Panasonic NCR18650G which is rated 3600mAh. For anything more than that, don't waste your money.

Oh, stay away from li ion batteries with the word Fire on it. It may actually cause fire

      • These are 21700 not 18650

        • My comment is about this video and 18650 cells

    • +1

If you go onto Budgetlightforum or Candlelightforum, they will tell you that, while project farm is a fair and decent reviewer, and i myself enjoy his videos, that the batteries he tested are know to be shoddy, and were not a good representation of Chinese 18650s

Anything made with the -Fire suffix are almost guaranteed to be terrible batteries

Liitokala, Nitecore, Xtar, Soshine and a few others are considered to be decent, if not quite as good as the brand named japanese batteries

  • I don't think there are many devices that take 21700 battery size. Great for making your own power supply though.

    • Yeah, my thought too. Torches tend to use AA or 18650 batteries. These are like for niche market.

  • -5

    Are these rechargeable?

  • are these rechargeable?

    • +1

Have you got anything else to do than trolling?

      • apologies for my ignorance. what's special about these batteries?

        • +1

          They're not AA's - a much more specialised use. Google 21700/18650 batteries.

    • +1

      these are, in fact, rechargeable

as a very short summary, 21700s, and 18650s are the batteries you will find in Tesla and other car battery packs, laptop batteries, power tool packs, etc
They have been the battery of choice in larger batteries for years now, the difference now being we can buy them individually and install them in many consumer devices now, instead of AAA and AA batteries, with more power and longer battery life

  • There are most definitely some fake ones of this brand going around too, but more importantly the real ones are not the samsung or Panasonic cells they "pretend" to be based on their model numbers.
They are however correct in their capacity. However the current they can do is not the same as the Branded ones by the same names.
The 21700s appear to be good for up to 15A, not 35. The 18650s are good for 10A, not 20A.
So with that in mind, they are either lower capacity or lower current than the best on the market, so at a good price they have their place no doubt.
Just dont expect to get re-wrapped cells at this price. They are about half the price of the Samsung 30q cells, but half the current. the 21700s are even less than half.
They would make for some great spares or people starting out with crappy flashlights etc. Personally id rather pay $8 for a 30q, but i might get a couple of spares for some multicell lights where its less important.

    Oz sellers:
    4 x Samsung 30q - $34
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Genuine-Samsung-INR18650-25R-30Q…

    4 x Sony VTC6 - $40

Low quality battery. Spend a few more dollars could save your life.

    • +2

Is anyone else here hunkered down in Fallujah with a dead flashlight as well? Also wondering if amazon prime does same day delivery to Iraq? Any answers appreciated (emergency).

      • wat

  • Would not recommend for vaporizers.

    • +1

Correct. They are decent capacity, but arent high current cells - The most important factor for vapes.

    • +1

      Really depends on setup.

I'm using a rebuildable dripper with .36 ohm coil drawing 11 amps so these would be OK.

At higher wattages you'd need to be careful.

Having said that, I would pay the extra for Samsung, Sony, etc.

  • I'm super hesitant to invest in cheap 18650s, they require an extra level of vigilance. I absolutely would not recommend using these in a vape

  • Do these batteries fit in the same space of the 3xAAA canisters that some 18650 cheap torches come with?

    • No idea about your specific device, the 18650 cells fit in 18650 devices, same goes for 21700, needs to be made for it.

    • I have a couple of small torches like that; they are roughly 18500.
18650s don't fit in the ones I have, can't screw the cap on.

  • +2

Hmm it's charging me $20+ for shipping when I try to order 10+ pcs, anyone else?

    • yeah, I am gettting the same

    • Yeah. No free shipping as mentioned by the OP.

      • damn, sorry guys, i went with the 4 pack, and was given free shipping.

they obviously have a weight limit that i didnt hit.

—Edit: nope, seems they've caught on, and have changed the shipping price
i'll edit to reflect the change

  • These batteries do not have a button top so those using it for certain torches might not be able to get them to work without some modification.

  • Doesn't appear to be protected? How important is it to have a protected cell?

I have a flashlight which I've popped in a Sony cell from an old laptop pack, but my reading indicated I should be using a protected 18650.

    • At the risk of answering a question with another question, it depends on whether the light has low-voltage/over-discharge protection built in or not.

  • +2

Can't get free shipping, only priority line available which is $20+

    • Yes, Gearbest seems to have caught on their deal was too good to continue
I've changed the post to reflect the changes

      • Once the deal is no longer obtainable it needs to be marked expired — please don't alter the deal any further.

        • The deal itself if still available, even now. The shipping that was free at the time has been modified though, so while still good value, its not as good value.

          Sorry if that was incorrect

          • @JohnathonDoe: As the original deal and votes were for ~AU $6.91 delivered, any significant change in price will mean the deal is expired, it is now almost AU $30 delivered.

            Thanks

  • Which diving light did you get? Acebeam W10 II?

    • Sofirn SD05
I needed waterproofing to at least 50 meters for diving, and at ~$35 it was a steal
not worth making a post here about it though, theyre always about that price :D

      • How do you find it for actual scuba diving?
I picked up the Thorfire TD26 and im very happy with it so far, but i know these cheapie dive torches wont last forever

        • I am a big fan of the twist action for the lighting levels, i just wish the corrugations were on the switching mechanism itself, not above it. gripping the switch with 3mm gloves requires concentration.
Other than that i find it a good quality torch, and waterproof to at least 30 meters so far.
Although they are easy to lose, it seems :/

          • @JohnathonDoe: Good to hear.
I'll bookmark it for a backup torch.
The Thorfire is my first dive torch and only used it 3 times but pretty happy with it so far. The magnetic switch takes a little to get used to but no problem using gloves.
The body is also a good size and very easy to hold, Max 16m deep so far but no issues.

  • Anyone received theres yet?

    • +1

I got mine about a week ago, but that would make sense as I would have been the first to order them.

They came wrapped in 2x layers of white foam wrapping

Set them all in an Opus BT-C3100 for testing, all came out between 4150-4250 mAh, so very pleased with the capacity
In comparison, my Samsung 50e 21700's read as having ~4950 mAh capacity
