Google Assistant Vs Amazon Alexa

Hi guys,

Hope I didn't start something that's previously discussed. Since there has been so many deals recently on products with google assist and Amazon echo/alexa products. I just wanted to ask which one people use and if there is a reason why you might have chose one over another.

I am currently using Amazon Alexa system, but may need to be buy more as I'll be moving to a bigger house and before I fully commit a system, I just want to get some opinions on it. I'm only currently using them to control lights and the basic weather, traffic, time etc, but will try to implement more once I move.

I have looked up various comparison online and usually google come out on top but by just marginal.

I got an Echo Dot when it was free with Audible, put it in the bedroom, and have found it really rather good. I'm thinking of a photo frame for the living room, and think I'd like a Google-based one as all my photos are on Google Photos and there doesn't seem to be a sync between Amazon Photos and Google Photos. If it weren't for that, I'd probably go with Alexa everywhere.

I have YT Premium and GPM so the Google ecosystem is my preference.
I also have a few Dots but don't use them as my main use for Google is the music and weather. One day I'll upgrade to lighting and things around the house.

I am sick of saying "Hey Google" though. "Alexa" would make my life easier. Hopefully down the line Google could add an option to create custom wake-words.

  • I set up both when I was evaluating - I found that the Echos worked quicker and were more responsive with smart home (lights etc) than the Googles were. Google was better for telling me what time the shops were open.

Have now got a heap of Echos of all types around the house and cars (echo auto is fun!)

I reckon in the US it may be closer, but here in AU, it's really Google all the way.

It depends what you are using it for perhaps..

I tested them both about 6 months ago and I found Alexa came on top.. But to each their own

    Here is my basic summary
-google better for search perhaps/asking questions / novelty
-Alexa has more skills and abilities, I haven't found anything I can't get don't home automation wise
-Alexa has better shopping support especially through amazon

    About me
    -I am a hard core android/Google user
-I currently own at least 10 alexas in my home from dots to show
-Home automation includes at least 15bulbs, 5 plugs,2 cams, Logitech smart hub(entire entertainment system)

    • what do you do with 10 Alexa's? How big is your house? lol
Not trying to be judgemental, it just seems like a lot.

      • 10 isn't excessive… I've got ~15 or so through my house, once you start putting them throughout rooms and bathrooms etc they add up.

  • I've got both devices and so far Alexa makes me want to smash the living S##t out of it. The device constantly gets things wrong, can't understand S##t and randomly activates its self when no one is talking. Its only purpose is to show a live feed of people ringing my doorbell and tell me where my amazon packages are. Google, on the other hand, is way better but the only downside is no official support for Ring Doorbells without API implementation and sometimes freezes which can be annoying as you have to restart the device.

  • Daily use of either benifits the companies far more than the user. I prefer swearing at my own incompetency.

    I vote none.

    I normally get poo-pooed for saying this… but… https://www.zerohedge.com/technology/police-requests-access-…

  • A guy on Youtube did a Google assistant vs Alexa comparison. Google has better AI, especially when it came to understanding and responding to random questions.
