There's a max number of devices you can run via wifi before the network goes to shit. I have 30 hue lamps plus switches and about 40 wifi devices (which is pushing it). Adding 30 wifi lamps would kill the network, not to mention most require internet access to function. If I had the funds, I'd ditch my wifi switches and smoke alarms for zwave without hesitation.

      • This! Wifi device is good as they provide alternatives for people who doesn't want to buy a hub and ideal for small number of devices, but when you're adding more and more, zigbee or other similar tech works better because they're more efficient and don't clog up the whole router and internet connection.

I have many Z-Wave devices and it has been absolute hell. Z-Wave has been around for a long time but it seems to be a cottage industry full of engineers and tinkerers who don't mind spending months trying to make things work - and I'm not talking fancy automations, I'm talking about getting things to turn on and off. It's a complicated mess.

Yes, most home routers can often only support 32 or less devices, but there are plenty cheap home WiFi routers right now that support 200+ devices, which is the same as Z-Wave. However you can add more WiFi access points to increase that number.

Right now, WiFi sensors seem to be less mature and reliable than Z-Wave/Zigbee sensors, but I believe this will change over time.

And yes all of the well-supported IP-based automation systems require the internet.

Support for security/alarm systems is also something Z-Wave/Zigbee might be better at - I haven't looked into that one yet.

        • What hub are you using and what brand z-waves?

          • @AncientWisdom: SmartThings Wifi hub & Aeotec switches & dimmers

            • @psdillon: Hmm interesting that should be solid.

What kind of problems have you come across?

              • @AncientWisdom: Aeotec devices that just stop responding to the network within a few days of factory reset. Factory-reset devices that can't see the network when they have 2m line-of-sight to a routing node. Smartthings itself is very slow, combined with poor UI design it's agonizingly slow trying to configure devices, even worse trying to troubleshoot them. When you have lots of devices it can take you weeks. Smartthings has many bugs and support frequently tell their uses to delete all devices and factory-reset the hub, which is just not practical when you have many devices.

From what I've seen it looks like all the other hubs have their own problems. Even the Z-Wave chipset manufacturers software is a dogs breakfast.

                • @psdillon: It does sound like your hub is the problem.

I chose Hubitat but can't recommend it yet, early days. However my Aeotec nano dimmer has been rock solid.
I have a dual nano switch that isn't working (well working only through the hub, not the physical switch), but that's my fault for not ensuring compatibility before buying. I hope they come out with an official driver soon.

                  • @AncientWisdom: How are you enjoying the "feature" where the dimmer won't turn the light on instantly? You can work around it by setting min and max brightness the same, but then it won't work as a dimmer.

                    • @psdillon: Light turns on instantly. It takes 1-2s to turn off however, haven't tried to look into it yet.
If my understanding is correct, all of that is controlled by the software on the hub, not the device itself.

                      • @AncientWisdom: It's controlled by the device because Z-Wave network is too slow. The Aeotec dimmers don't turn on/off instantly, they ramp up from min to max brightness. By default the ramp time is 3 seconds. You can't disable the ramp. The min ramp time you can configure is 1 second. You can configure min brightness the same as max brightness so that it feels like it's instant, but then you can't control the dimming. Also setting ramp time to 1 second makes it a bit difficult to set the dimming from the switch as it goes too fast for you to catch the level you want. Depending on your lights, usually they don't come on until 30 to 50% brightness, so out of the box when you press the button nothing happens for 1 to 1.5 seconds.

We built two houses and put 74 dimmers throughout. You can imagine my disappointment that we can't use them as dimmers if we want instant on/off. Very expensive mistake based on expert/forum recommendations.

Sorry for the brain dump, but now you know as much as I wish I new when I started. :)

  • Thanks mate

  • Has anyone updated the firmware of this with Tasmota? And what app do you use in IOS considering Yeti is not available in the Aus AppStore? TIA.

  • Can this be used one beside the other when plugged into a power point?

  • Anyone know their max power rating? The HS100 and HS110 can handle around 15A peak, making them ok for 2400w heaters. The ones that are rated at 2400w often trip when heaters start up.

  • all gone… =(

Keep checking, was coming up as OOS about 1.5 hours ago, then came back in stock.

    • I just got two

      • I take that back - they just refunded my order :(

    • I bought 4 and can only really use 1 or 2 so still have in box. I was excited about kettle but because we have one that switches itself off when done it wont work with this. Seems best for things like lamps - or if you had a simpler kettle for example. Let me know if you want them - can't see an easy way to return to Auspost.

  • I use the Grid Connect app for all my wifi stuff from different brands.

    Aldi Smart stuff works
    Brilliant Smart Stuff works
    All Bunnings Smart Stuff Works

    • what about lifx

Bought for my aquarium. Replacing my old rotary style 24 hour timer plug. Thanks OP.

  • Kogan sent me an email with 10% off Tech Accessories. Opted to get these https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-smarterhome-smart-plug-en… as today is my last day of the free Kogan First Trial. So cost was $44.99 for Four Pack delivered = $11.25ea

I walked into a Auspost looking for these without any luck. The owner ended giving me the TP Link HS100 for the same price.

  • does someone know the max ampere rating for this???

  • +1

Mine got delivered today. Only ordered one though

  • Anyone bought this has received an update other than the tax invoice? I tried searching the order but there's no result for it…

    • If you have an account with Aus Post they usually add packages with your registered name and address automatically to your tracking list. Same thing happened here.

I only ordered 1 but have 2 separate tracking numbers that looks to be the same, so possibly getting 2 for 1. They've enabled Saturday delivery and the first one is coming today.

      • Thanks I was able to find the tracking after log in again to their website, it appears the items are still in VIC.

    • Ive received nothing else other than the Invoice. Theres nothing on my tracking

      • Same with me, nothing at all as yet. Not even tracking information.

        • I'm still waiting on something, anything, from them. I've had nothing at all since the day I purchased.

    • If you are located in QLD, it will probably arrive by Wednesday. Mine just updated that it is in Redbank so I am expecting it to be delivered tomorrow.

I received only the invoice but nothing else. Log in to "My Post" account on Australia Post website I was able to see the tracking number (and all old ones).

  • I ordered 3, got them delivered in just a couple of days.
    However…
Auspost just delivered another 3 to my door! Lol wtf.
    6 for $30.

    Wonder if they'll deliver more?

    • Crazy. What are you going to do with the extra 3?

    • I came here to see if anyone else got a second delivery that they didn't order. Looks like i'm not the only one.
I only ordered one though. That one arrived last week. Then a second delivery came today.
      Weird.

Same thing happened to me. Was anyone charged twice? 6 for $30 is a good deal

    • Same, 2 for 2

    • Wouldn't mind grabbing some off someone that got a double delivery (happy to pay for it) as my order got cancelled.

      • I only got double delivery as I ordered 2 sets of 2. but can't use on my kettle as planned so happy to pass on 2 or even 3 of them..

        • Could you turn on private messages on your profile (or pm me) so we can sort something out?

          Thanks!!

        • Btw, to use with kettle in the morning, you turn the power off and press the button before going to bed and then either set the power to turn on at a specific time or do it from your phone.

    • Same for me, I ordered only one but received one last week and just got another one today.

  • Got delivered just now

  • +1

Just got delivered. No high expectations for $10 smart plug but was surprised by its small footprint and ease of setup… super happy with the purchase

    • Cool, so slim enough to be able to plug in something else in the other outlet for a double gang GPO?

      • +1

        yes

  • I got it delivered yesterday. small form factor with easy setup using tuya app.. very very happy.

  • Still havent received mine

    • Call Auspost and get them to chase up. I received no tracking information at all. There is a tracking number for it. I made inquiries and CSR got back to me within a couple of days. I found out it's been sitting at my LPO since the 15/6. I received nothing, no emails, no tracking information in SMS or email and was NOT carded and no attempted delivery at my property despite working from home.

    • I'm in WA and just received mine yesterday

Hey folks - I think I got a bad piece. It stopped working after 2 days. It was so good when it worked. I could switch on my heater using Google Assistant. Do you know who I should be reaching out to for replacement/repair ?
