  • Any good?

  • +3

Pity about the blokes who bought it yesterday for the $15 what a shame.

    • +1

Don't think there was much interest at $15. Seems like people happy with $10 though; I wonder if I didn't post the deal again (when I noticed it dropped to $10) if it would have dropped further to $5 in a few days. We'll never know I suppose…

      • +2

I believe so. Just like another deal i posted here before. Thats why i dont post any new ones, just kept updating the old post for those who really want them.

        • +1

Well I didn't know what to do, so I reported my previous deal and asked if I should update it or create a new one, and they said create a new one.

          • @John Kimble: Yes, they usually recommend creating a new one, for many purposes. Though once i found out that the website tracks and adjust prices, i stopped doong that. It first appeared on Amazon.

  • +3

Just bought 3 of them thanks

  • Thanks grabbed a couple.

  • +1

    Free standard delivery Australia wide.

    • +15

I wonder who they use? 🤔

      • +9

        probably Fastway Couriers

  • Doesn’t work with Siri, but great deal for android users.

    • Doesn't work with HomeKit or Siri voice control, but still works on iOS devices using the Tuya app (or one of its deriviatives). Also, Apple users are able to use Google Home devices….

      • +1

You can get it to work with HomeKit app on iOS devices and use Siri too.
But you will need to do a little bit of hack for this to work. You need to run Home Assistant on a raspberry Pi or some server at home which will act like a bridge. Home Assistant link: https://www.home-assistant.io/
You can integrate Tuya based appliances to Home Assistant including smart life; And also you need integrate HomeKit to Home Assistant. Then just add the Home Assistant Bridge to Homekit app and it will work very easily.
Have this setup and works perfectly fine. I used Mirabella Genio (also based on Tuya) and Laser Bulbs (Tuya based) as smart devies. Works perfectly fine with Siri and Alexa. I have been running Home Assistant in a docker on my NAS.
You can also integrate other devices like Ring, Sony TV, PS4 etc using Home Assistant.

    • +2

You can use the ‘Hey Siri’ -> ‘Hey Google’ shortcut to open Google Assistant on iOS.

      • Thats the best way! Awesome thanks

    • Or you could hack it so you don't need to use Tuya then pair it to an existing home automation system like SmartThings or Google Home.

Wonder if you can hack this one, the newer Tuya chips aren't hackable. The hardware used for Tuya based devices are actually very good, but the later chips they have locked it down so they don't have people hacking it for other ecosystems.

      • From what I know the newer ones are hackable but not via OTA like with Tuya-Convert. You have to pull them apart, solder pins/wires down and configure it over a serial TTL connection.

  • Thanks. Just get 2.

  • +1

What is the power consumption of this is like?

    • Negligible.

      • Thank you! Bought one. :)

  • Thanks, got a couple!

  • -1

    Awesome, bought enough thanks.

    • +2

      Enough?

      • 5 in total, one for each room.

  • Saw out of stock when I placed my item into cart … check out by PayPal didn't show the button to actually place the order by the item was still in the shopping cart. So I do normal checkout and it went through. Hopefully I still got it.

    • OOS shows if go beyond 3 units.

      • Thanks for the info. I did order 3 … but it doesn't explain the issue with finishing the order using "Checkout by PayPal"?

  • I’m wondering what people’s use cases for this is, I’m tempted but can’t think of how I could use it

    • I don't really need them either, so I haven't bought any. I would preferably like ones with energy monitoring if I ever buy any. The only thing I can think of using it for, is to make my portable air conditioning unit "smart".

      • +1

Those A/C units are so inefficient I don't think there's any way to make them smart :-)

    • +6

Make dumb lamps smart without the need for smart globes (you can then use globes with a higher lumen output than smart globes).

In summer, I use it to make my pedestal fans smart fans.

Good for any device you might want to power cycle remotely (though not good for your modem/router since powering it off will kill your connection to the smart plug and you won't be able to turn it on again).

    • great for voice switching hard to reach switches like a lamp in the corner on the other side of the room, or a TV powerboard to monitor energy usage (only if you get a plug that monitors that, like these https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-smarterhome-smart-plug-en…)

my most frequent and favourite use is having one linked to all of my low-power under cabinet LED lighting in the kitchen, which has a few sets of ikea dome lights and i leave them on at night so that there's ambient lighting without high consumption. Smart Life app tells me i use about 0.9 kwh a month on those lights having them on 10-14 hours a day

    • +1

I use one to turn on/off my Resmed CPAP which has no individual switch. Saves having to pull out the power cord (power point is also hard to reach behind the bed).

  • +3

Thanks OP grabbed 3, now I can control when to turn on my electric blanket so nice and toasty before heading to bed.

    • Nice, that's a good use case.

  • Can this monitor power consumption? I'm trying to find power drainers in my home.

    • meross can. Also can tie into home assistant well.

      • +1

        But can these?

      • It seems $25 on Amazon, any cheaper one?

    • Fyi you will not get a unit that can measure low power usage properly. You need more expensive gear for that.

      • Sounds like you got experience in this. Any advice? I want to see if there's any particular devices that are draining heaps of power on standby as well as during use.

I've seen my usage double since last year, can't work out why. (this is not even factoring the increase in rates)

        • +1

Yeah but lower power usage items won't be the ones doubling your bill…

          • +1

@Typical16-bitEnjoyer: Which is why I want to find these higher power usage items. I'm thinking I can move a smart plug around the house to find what's the biggest drainer.

        • +3

You can borrow PowerMate Lite power meters (which cost $100+ to purchase) from some local libraries. Note that there are borrowing restrictions in many libraries at the moment so you may not be able to loan one until things calm down, but have a search in the catalogue for 'energy kit' or something similar.

  • +1

Great deal, thanks. Hoping it works with tuya convert.

    • +1

let me know how it goes with tuya convert!

      • What is the advantage of Tuya convert? ELI5 please :)

        • Tuya convert flashes the firmware to Tasmota. Makes it fully localised, no cloud crap, private and much more responsive.

But it needs to be hooked into something like home assistant to work. The original apps won't be able to control it after flashing. I haven't seen any android apps to control Tasmota devices.

      • Will do.

  • +1

Is this compatible with IFTT app? For example, could I program it to do the following: if temperature (as per weather app) is less than 9 degrees, then power on?

    • Sure could but you'd need something to trigger the weather IF.

      • Can I turn it on and off using API call?

        • +1

Don't see why not. You'll have to use the Brilliant Smart app to get it working correctly with IFTTT however.

          • @Tacooo: Are there any smart plugs that can trigger IFTTT based on power consumption? For example, trigger X if power consumption is above Y mW. I can't see this as a trigger in the Brilliant service in IFTTT.

            • @tukanglistrik: Nothing I know of that's configured that way in IFTTT. You'd be looking more at HomeAssistant or something if you want to integrate that kind of functionality.

  • Picture in the Auspost link shows UK plug.
Anyone got it already? Can anyone confirm this is Aus plug?

    • +1

Auspost picture shows an AU plug. Here is the side profile of a UK plug: https://i.imgur.com/MeXGQIF.jpg

      • Ah yes…..sorry my bad.

    • You're mistaken as that's the AU plug, not the UK plug.

  • Good price.

  • Thanks OP, just when I need it. Only had one wemo smart plug which I bought two years ago and they were (and still) pricey.

  • Thanks OP. Bought some.

  • +1

To anyone using the plug with Smart Life app, can you please confirm if this plug's ON/OFF status can be seen directly from the Smart Life home screen (screen where it shows all smart devices)? Or do you need to select the plug first before being able to see the status? I've got a few smart plugs, one that I bought from Aldi doesn't show plug status in the home screen which is really annoying. TIA!

    • Why don't you use voice commands? (Just curious)

      • It is for times when I am out of the house. From the home screen on Smart Life, I can see status of my smart devices at a glance (except for the Aldi Bauhn plug).

    • +1

A lot of the smart devices are based of the Tuya platform (https://www.tuya.com/platform). The smart life app devices are all based on Tuya. The plug in this post is also based on Tuya as per the mod, so it should come up on the smart life app. Most eBay smart devices are all on Tuya platform, inclduing some aus based ones like Mirabella Genio, Laser etc.
Philips Hue, Lifx, Tplink Kasa, Belkin Wemo all have their own platform. So similarly, its very likely the ALDI Bauhn have their own too.

The best way to see and manage all devices at one place is to use Amazon Alexa or Google Home. They integrate with almost all smart devices.
Apple Homekit and Siri doesn't work with any Tuya based devices; so you will have to use a custom bridge/hub.

      • Thank you for the lecture info but you misunderstood my question. I am using Smart Life app with 2 brands of smart plug, Brilliant and Bauhn (from ALDI). Both brands are TUYA but they appear differently in Smart Life. From the home screen in Smart Life app, I can see all my smart plugs but only Brilliant shows the plug status in the home screen which I can also tap on the status symbol to turn it on/off. Bauhn doesn’t.

    • +2

This is screenshot from my Smart Life app. Both devices are smart plugs, one on the left is Brilliant Smart Plug while one on the right is Bauhn Smart Plug. Brilliant smart plug has the status icon (circled green) while Bauhn does not. The status icon shows the status of the plug (On/Off) and I can also turn the plug On/Off by pressing on it. I have contacted Smart Life support and was told that the availability of this icon depends on the smart plug manufacturer.

So I am hoping to hear from Smart Life app users who has this Mistral smart plug whether the plug has status icon?

      • +1

Just got the Mistral smart plug delivered so able to try it out. It shows the status icon on smart life app home screen alright. Screenshot
        Out of stock now though…

        • Awesome. Thank you!! I decided to risk it and bought one when it was still available.

          • @trex: Good one! Can't fault it for the price :) Have you received yours?

            • @iori57: Not yet. Hoping it will arrive soon.

  • Thanks OP , bought 2 :)

  • +2

Bought 2, don't know why yet

  • think i got the last 3, cheers. come in handy for a new fish tank.

    • Nah I thought so too, I think that just the buying limit per order

  • +1

    ozbargained :(

    • +1

I originally saw them in my local post office, so could be worth checking, but I don't know if they take store stock to fulfil online orders…so they could also be gone in store.

  • Thanks OP.
Ordered one to give it a try.

  • Last post says

"Good price but the Kogan (work with Tuya App) ones 4 for $50 plus shipping (free with free trial of first) are better value - they have 2 usb sockets (2.4A) and a built in smart meter for monitoring power usage - they are also thin enough to fit 2 side by side on a double socket. (https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-smarterhome-smart-plug-en…)

I just bought 8 of them but made a mistake and bought 8 of the non usb ones also!"

  • i supose this doesnt have power monitoring

  • Can you use these in place of a timer? Do they remember the schedule in case of power outage. How much current can they handle.

Looking for controlling various things on aquarium and a pool

    • Haven't tried it but with Google Home you can set up routines, might be possible to turn these on/off at certain times

  • Does this need wifi internet or just wifi will do?

  • Does anyone know the difference between 'Smart Life - Smart Living' and 'Tuya Smart' apps? Both Tuya Inc.

    • You can use Grid Connect app too

  • When you can make a WiFi device this cheaply surely the home automation protocol war has been won. Z-Wave, Zigbee, Thread, Bluetooth low-energy… how can they survive?

    • Lower power usage is the key

      • +1

Negligible unless it's for battery devices like doorbells

      • If a WiFi video doorbell can last 6 months then power doesn't seem to be an issue. There are WiFi leak sensors that will last 2+ years on an AA battery.

If you need a really small device with coin-cell battery than yeah, those other protocols are useful.
