Pretty sweet prices on the excellent Pixel 3a/3a XL range.
Not sure how it works with warranty though, being a US import…

For those without Prime, delivery is $10.86 for the 3a, and $11.55 for the 3a XL.

Anyways, thought I'd share - hope it helps someone!

Funny how Google France has it from 249€/$410 and google Australia is still at $649

    • I got my 3a XL over a year ago $630 (due to a trade-in offer and TRS). It's been over a year and it's still never been that low.

    • +4

      oui

    • Can you actually order from the France google store?

      • +1

Yup, just use a France address :p

  • +2

Damn nice, though the 4a is just around the corner.

Might hold off for that, but this is still a great price for a great phone if someone needs one now

    • +7

Well, the 4a was supposedly around the corner for a long time now :(

Looking like its been pushed back till Octber, some reports have said!

      • +1

Oh I didn't know that, just searched it now :(

I guess my OG Pixel will last until then, I just want a good battery so tempted for the 3a XL.

Just hope it's not a waste to wait for the 4a and then it ends up being kinda lame.

        • +2

I'm also waiting to see how the Pixel 4a turns out.
Some think the 730 SoC in the Pixel 4a may be too old for a late 2020 release though.
The 765 or 10-15% faster 768 SoCs of other phones support 5G with their integrated modems and should be more power efficient than those 865 flagships with separate 4G/5G modems.
Then again, I believe only the Pixel line has 3 years of feature and security updates.

          • +1

@cheapdude: Yeah the Pixels last a lot longer than other phones which is good, I'm surprised my OG got android 10.

I don't mind the 730 processor that much, I just use the phone to play Fate/Grand Order and using Twitter/Discord so it should be plenty.

Plus being a snapdragon is always a bonus in itself, almost always has custom rom support, especially more so being a pixel line.

          • +1

@cheapdude: At the end of the day, just remember that the 3a and 4a phones are designed as mid-range, and regardless of what chip they get, I don't think it'll actually make much of a difference. If comparing to the 2020 SE, it's not even a challenge.

My 3a XL with the Snapdragon 670 is plenty fast enough for me - so it's only gonna get better! :)

            • @Uncle Roger: If the 670 seems to do the trick then I'm sure the 730 will be just fine :)

Everyone worries too much about these magic numbers, but as long as the phone feels good to use then that's all that matters.

        • +1

Yeah, its a shame that its being delayed so long. Hopefully it'll pay off.

But if you're after better battery, I would be very surprised if the 4a beats the 3a XL in battery life, as according to the much-leaked specs the 4a will have a 3080mAh battery, whereas the 3a XL has 3700mAh.

          • @Uncle Roger: Yeah it's a big bump in battery, but I guess it has a smaller screen size so it might be okay?

I guess worst case scenario I can get a non-Google phone if the 4a turns out to be a bummer, but here's hoping there's another 3a XL deal around that time!

  • Any good deals on the regular Pixel 3?

  • +4

Is this a better buy than a Pixel 3 at $488??

    https://www.harveynorman.com.au/google-pixel-3-64gb-optus-va…

Moving from a Pixel 2. I understand battery life is better in the 3a but apart from that, the Pixel 3 seems like it has the 3a well and truly covered. Smaller bezel, faster processor, better comms chipset, etc.

    • +4

Like you've said, the 3 is definitely overally better, but for someone like me, a long battery life is priority. Pixel 3a XL excels.

      • Thanks for sharing info guys. Thinking same although 3a appeals to me due to smaller size/baby hands

    • 3 is supposed to be the flagship and the 3a the midrange. But the 3a XL has the same flagship camera and a larger battery which are the 2 things I care about most, so the 3a is better for me.

      • +1

Keep in mind, it has the same "flagship" software processing, the camera hardware is quite old.

        • +2

My 3aXL takes better pics than my wife's iPhone 11, so it still goes pretty well.

          • @1st-Amendment: Yes, due to the software processing if that's a thing you like, the videos are worse than nearly any phone in the last 5 years though, and also the iPhone 11 has far better hardware for photography, being a super basic thing such as having more than a single fixed lens. If they update software on iPhone to overprocess everything, then it could be better than Pixel for example as iPhone camera hardware is better.

            • +1

@onlinepred: Not sure why you were downvoted. I own the 3a XL and agree that video quality can be very poor.

    • +2

If it helps, the pixel 3 has stereo front facing speakers, which I really like.

  • +1

Any of those Plex phones still lurking cheap anywhere?

  • i so want to buy the 3a XL but cant due to no wireless charging. Apparently with the 4a they might be adding it due to the fact that it is in direct competition with the iphone SE and that has wireless charging.

    • +1

Be wary that the only reason this theory exists is because a pic leaked from one of the comapanies who manufacture phone cases, with a pic of the 4a render in a case on a fast charger. While it would be an amazing addition, I wouldn't get too excited :)

  • Dumb question: Would a US import have an Aus Plug if ordering from Amazon AU?

The https://www.harveynorman.com.au/google-pixel-3-64gb-optus-va… says Optus Variant, does that mean it's locked to Optus and I can't use my Telstra sim?

    • +1

Na, would come with a US plug, as coming directly from the USA.

Upon reading the bold text in the description of the Optus variant:
"Please note: This unlocked phone includes full manufacturer’s warranty and features Optus network branding. This means that the phone is not locked to a specific carrier but may come pre-installed with Optus applications. Additionally, when you power on the device, the Optus logo may display."
