  Is there any point to the All in One form factor? All I see is the lack of portability of a desktop and the inhibited performance of a laptop.

    Some people don't like the mess of cables that come with a desktop, and don't like the poor ergonomics and small screen of a laptop. They don't need the power of a full-blown desktop either, as they might only use it to browse the web and some MS Office stuff.

    An AIO fills that position perfectly.

      Mess of cables… hold on a sec. A desktop + monitor has only 1 extra cable, why it suddenly become a mess?

      Something like a NUC will give much more flexibility than an all-in-one while only occupy minimal space, and yeah an extra cable.

        It's a business machine. I've got clients with hundreds of these and they don't complain one bit. They did complain about desktop and monitor. It has a purpose.

          @ph81: Interesting, what are the complains about desktops and monitors? I work in consulting industry and PC + 2 monitors or laptop + dock + 2 monitors are pretty standard for all offices I visited, haven't seen any company use AIO PC yet so I'm curious on what's the reasoning behind that (to be clear, iMacs are very popular, but I don't see any AIO PC on the Windows side used in office)

            I think if AIOs were priced the same as equivalent desktop computers, more offices would have them. Right now these business-grade ones are stupidly expensive unless there's a sale.

            e.g. when there isn't a sale on, this Optiplex 7470 is a ridiculous $3,738. The equivalent desktop is $2,758. A monitor is about $200. That makes it about $780 cheaper. If a business has to buy 30 computers, that's a $23,400 price difference. Management would probably just say "yeah the staff can live with more wires".

            There will be a volume discount with those quantities of course, but the price differential will still be there.

            Also, some IT departments prefer separate boxes as they're easier to service. Lenovo recognizes the appeal of an AIO and ease of swappability of a desktop, so they made a monitor with a slot at the back that lets you slide in one of their mini desktops into to convert them into an AIO. HP and Dell have done the same, so there's definitely a market for the neatness of it. Dell even went to the effort of developing a computer that fits into a monitor stand.

              @eug: Gotta love IBM/Levono business PC. I was about to say that something like a ThinkCenter with a monitor on top is a much better AIO PC :)) . In my line of work, 2 monitors are pretty much standard, and it's just hard to find a good matching monitor to use together with an AIO.

        An AIO just needs 1 cable, for power.

        A desktop needs:
        - power cable for the monitor
        - power cable for the desktop
        - DP/HDMI cable for the monitor
        - USB cable if you want to use the USB ports on the monitor because the desktop is on the floor
        - network cable as desktops don't normally come with wifi

        That's 3 or 4 extra cables which are usually about 2 meters each, so now you have 6-8 meters of cable to cable-manage, and you'll also have an extra box on the floor or desk. If it's on the floor, it'll suck up dust which means something else to clean, which is a hassle with so many wires around.

        A wifi adaptor for a desktop will either stick out of a USB port precariously and be in a poor position behind a metal box, or will need yet another cable to mount the antenna in a better position.

  I work with education and once kids are involved, they want to minimise the amount of cables. They tell me that it's due to kids doing dumb stuff like pull the power out of monitors, removing the USB keyboard cable and plugging in the front of the machine. The security covers stop them from doing this. You have to improvise with a desktop and monitor.

  Also administration staff love them. A nice tidy desk without 2 separate parts and plenty of work space for them. Simple is better.
