well if you're only going to use your drives purely for storage then yes i guess connecting the drive directly to your router would be enough, however people like myself tend to use the NAS for more than just a storage device. for e.g Plex Server, Surveillance Station, NZB, Sonar, Radar, Virtualisation , run your own cloud storage, VPN, DNS Server, File replication and the list goes on.

Often the read write speeds aren't too crash hot on Routers, unsure if recent models improved that.

I remember a Netgear model that could act as a Plex server too, really got me keen… Till I saw how useless it would be. Possibly only 480p or something like that.

Fwiw I don't raid my NAS, it's all one big Plex Volume. External Backup is far more useful with drives like these.

  • Awesome deal thanks OP

  • To bite or not… the eBay sales have been disappointing.

That's not to bad, make it 15tb and you have ya self a sale. A fire sale.

Oh it's Amazon the company that doesn't listen to anyone.

  • sad that there isn't a Mybook Priced like this

    • aren't 14TB Elements and My Drives the exact same for shucking?

i don't think they make cheaper binned 14TB drives.

  • The price is now $420.72

  • It's back for $1 more.

    • It's at the same price, $418.60, now.

  • $417 now

  • Imagine having 14TB p0rn

    • I agree. I mean where could you even begin to start that high level of culling?

  • Back down to $416.19… but pretty much the lowest it's been.

This is the post I was talking to you about on the phone, officer.

  • What's going on here?

Amazon.com is out of stock for this exact hard drive that is being sold here.

The lowest price on that item ever is $271 USD. Add GST, and that is $430 AUD.

This is shipped over to Australia, and if you have Prime, it is A$416.19 (before cashback; Amazon AU cashbacks are more generous than US ones generally).

    • just recently amazon shorted the list of what you can get cashback on ……..

      • I thought they changed it recently to include computing products/technology (forgot the Amazon category name)… it worked when I bought a Synology NAS from Amazon AU a week ago, but haven't seen if it'll track Amazon US hard drive purchases like this.

  • So do people think these are actually a deal, or with COVID-induced demand shocks faltering and a weakening USD result in better bargins (e.g. A$25/tb) in the future?
