How Does Warranty Work on pilling of Doona Covers?

Bought a 1000 thread count (Material: 100% polyester microfibre) doona cover from groupon a month ago. After the first wash per the care instructions (after a weeks use) I see pilling (lint balls) all over the place. Its so bad that pilling pokes my skin and is very uncomfortable. Feels worse when turning in bed. I think I can remove it with a lint roller and it will probably be fine till the next wash. I would have hoped for more durability from a cover that sells for $109 (full price). I paid about $40 for it.

How does warranty work on such things ? It is expected for fabric to pill but then I would have hoped for better quality of the doona cover. In comparison, some cheap ebay seller sold me a better quality cover. I wrote to groupon who are happy to refund $7 !

Did you turn it inside out?

    Get a fabric shaver/defuzzer.

  • How did you count all the threads?

    • You're just being silly - the OP only has to count the threads in a representative inch, not the whole doona cover!

You could argue that the product was not of merchantable quality. However, polyester quilt covers are probably rubbish to begin with. Consider buying cotton, bamboo, or linen.

The fact they're quoting thread count for microfibre should've been the only warning sign you needed to know to avoid. Try a fabric shaver as juiciness suggested or just replace it with something of reasonable quality.

    100% polyester microfibre

That was your first mistake, you bought a plastic blanket.

  • It is $40 and it is microfibre; that sets off alarm bells. You could try and return it but is it worth the effort? You could remove the balls and wash it again to see if the balls return, it might, only, be from the first wash. The other thing you want to do is check the filter on your washing machine, and the inner drum, to see if there are balls in there also. I have an issue with some blankets shedding when I wash them so I bought a large washing bag from Daiso for $3 so I can stop stuff that sheds ending up in the washing machine. The mesh tends to hold them inside the bag.

My suggestion is buy pure cotton covers/sheets. They are worth the extra money and they last for years if you look after them.

  • Hmmmm, Groupon selling cheap doona covers at approximate retail value or more, with a massively inflated "RRP". That's a surprise.
