Broken English and first post on a previously inactive account, seems legit.

Dude, I just post this casually, I am not related to the seller. Please give me a break. I own the same charger to charge my controller , and it is great.
Try not to assume every posting is from seller or associated with the seller.

You have admit it sounded suspicious. First post, poor English and cheap Chinese crap. We’ve get plenty of socket-puppeteers that have all of this in common

        • +5

To be fair, I know kids out of high school that have poor English these days…

  • Is this the same dock you have? It sounds like the usual Chinese Knockoff crap

  • +5

I would NOT trust my Switch to an aliexpress dock!!

    • +2

Not saying whether this device is good or not, but to be fair, this charging unit appears to be downstream from the Switch (as in, it plugs into the Switch for power, not powering the Switch). So there is no issue with it bricking your Switch, which would continue to be powered by your stock charger as normal.

It's really just a glorified USB charging hub for joycons, that just happens to be shaped to fit neatly around the dock. (And joycons charge at a low rate, so shouldn't be an issue - I use a joycon charging stand from AliExpress, and it's fine).

Having said that, and while it is kinda neat (in a tidy sense), I find this aesthetically displeasing.

      • +2

TIL that there are USB ports on the side of the dock.. I've just got my joycon charger plugged into the USB port at back of the dock all this time

  • Cheaper chargers like these can break your joy-cons. Better to get a licensed charger.

      Huh? Source for this comment?

        • +3

So tell me, where exactly on that site does it say a cheap Joycon charger can brick joycons? (I guarantee you: it doesn’t!)

(I bet that I have posted a link to that site about 100x more than you have, so trust me, I know that site well!)

          • @caprimulgus: I didn't read the comments here. I just saw "source" , "switch" and "brick" and copied and pasted the first link I saw on Google.

            • @DASHCAM NOW DUDE: Ok cool no worries! (But maybe read the comments before posting next time then.) ;)

(Particularly when replying to someone who has posted a link to that very same website like 200 times on ozbargain - I would honestly bet money that if you did a search of Ozbargain, you would find that I have linked to that website more than everyone else combined!) :)

      • Personal experience - I lost two!

The slide rails on both left/right of my second set of joy-cons was damaged to the point that they were no longer recognised by the Switch. I sent them off to Nintendo for repair and they noted the odds were it was the charger.

        • Do you have a link to the charger you were using?

This is literally the only time I have ever read of joycons being damaged by a charger. Not doubting that you have two broken joycons, but there are a whole lot of people out there using generic chinese joycon chargers, and I have never come across anyone else having the same issue! (If it was a widespread design fault, then there would be post about it!)

At a guess, I reckon you must have got a faulty device (or cable?). As in, manufacturing fault as opposed to design fault.

Edit: Sorry, I was sidetracked, and was writing my replay before seeing your edit. So it's not an electrical issue - you're talking about the fit of the rails? Yes, if the charger rails are too tight, then perhaps they have worn out the rails. But this damage could also be from many other things!

FWIW, I strongly believe that Nintendo is just blaming the third party charger as a scapegoat - regardless of whether that actually was the issue or not. eg. They have blamed third party powerbanks for bricking Switches in the past, when this is absolutely not true! (Nintendo has the incentive to blame third party products, so that you buy their products - and go around the internet warning everyone to buy official products!) ;)

(Not saying that your charger DIDN'T damage your rails - just that I would be skeptical about what Nintendo says is the problem, because they have the incentive to lie/point the finger!)

          • @caprimulgus: I posted initially since it was something Nintendo's engineers were well aware of. I trust their experience far beyond my own.

The physical point of risk is how the controllers slide into the charger. I'm sure there are plenty of good ones out there (who wants to pay a premium for officially licenced things?) but this one certainly wasn't for me and, based on what Nintendo said, I'm far from the only one.

EB Games still selling the one I had: https://www.ebgames.com.au/product/nintendo-switch/232766-pl…

              @cliener:

I trust their experience far beyond my own.

And I would suggest to you that this is a mistake! Do not believe everything Nintendo says to you! :)

If we were to believe everything Nintendo says, then we would all be using official licensed things only! (Which is exactly what they want!)

As I said, they have blamed powerbanks for bricking Switches (many people have been told this by Nintendo!). Then they (well Anker) released a licensed powerbank…which is pretty much exactly the same as all the other USB-C PD powerbanks - with some "optimisations".

Third party powerbanks were just a scapegoat. I firmly believe it is very likely to be the same for the charger you bought! (They will say anything to deflect blame from the design of the joycons themsleves!)

Anyway, all good! We can agree to disagree. (Sorry about your joycons!) :)

Yeah would love to see a source for chargers breaking joycons.

  • I actually got the same one through eBay for 17 bucks a month ago, and I was surprised that it works well and my joycons charge no problems.

  • +1

Just found one even cheaper when looking for a stand.

  • Why is the OzBargain community always so negative and toxic?

    • Ozbargain is whirlpool for bargain hunters

      • Whirlpool is better than this.

  • I got the same one end of last year (got mine for ~$11 though) and it works pretty well. My only issue is that mine doesnt sit flush with the table ie. it is very slightly resting on the usb connection to the switch, but not enough to break it.
