Essential Things Must Buy for Newborn

I am gonna be Dad in December this year and I am very excited. This is going to be my first kid and would like to buy baby stuff.

As I am on budget, I only want to buy stuff which is absolutely needed.

Can someone please suggest what they think is absolutely needed.

Someone told me - not to buy bath tub as it is easier to get net (hammock style) and shower baby in Sink

Also my wife is in Week 16 and still having morning sickness…. We tried Ginger and Peppermint candies, biscuits but nothing. She is also resisting food due to smell or fragrance

Many people say pram, but if you are fit and healthy and want to consider in arms carrying then a baby carrier would suit better. Baby can sleep in it as well.

    • Pram could be used by both parents though

      • Likewise baby carrier.

      for 6 months??? isn't it too expensive…

      • +1

        $1 per day for 6 months…

      • I borrowed a capsule and it barely ever gets used but it's up to the baby. My kid sleeps deeply and isn't bothered going in and out of her car seat. Settles down once the car is moving. Some babies are more fussy and wake easily which is where a capsule can be useful. I'd honestly get it second hand or even borrow one if you feel like you need it but not necessary to buy before hand. Newborns can travel in certain car seats rated for it.

        • +3

Loved the capsule. Ours plugged into the stroller and car seat and was super handy. It practically doubles as a portacot while the kids are tiny.

    • How much will you be going out and require a capsule if we are still living through covid?
We never got a capsule and were fine. If OP is on budget imo capsule falls into the ‘nice to have’ category rather than essential

Second hand is often good value for baby things because.

    • Absolutely. I got a bassinet and change table for $50 each and just bought a new mattress and change mat. Brand new they're like $200-300 each.

      • This. They will be growing fast making most of items (furniture and stuff not apparal) obsolete quickly.

  • Congrats… Consider prams to which a toddler seat can be added in future (and thus can grow with your family). Also some car seats suitability ranges from 6 months-8 years and thus are value for money as no need to rebuy a different seat as the child grows. Also consider car seat safety features and max-width as one day you may need to install three on the back seat (before you know it). ;)

    • Thank you. I will keep that in mind for car seats for 6 months to 8yrs.

I will to google about adding toddler seat

Congrats! Don't need to spend too much. Gumtree and Facebook will be your best friends in getting cheaper stuff like prams and cots. Babies grow so much in the first year. Join a few mothers groups and it's a treasure trove of experience. Remember however, every baby will be different.

It's really exciting to become a parent, but quality sleep will be a distant memory. You can also buy this app called Wonder Weeks, it will explain and guide you through the first year because they will go through growth spurts and then every thing changes.

You can also message me if you want to know more. Good luck and enjoy your sleep as much as you can

    • Thanks :) I am going to Baby Bunting to get their catalogue and do some research and then look for stuff on Marketplace.

  • Call your urologist asap.

  • I remember as a new parent being unduly worried about SIDS after a good friends baby died. I would say to you RELAX and enjoy - unless your bub is premature or has been on oxygen at the hospital do not worry about it and get all the sleep you can - you are going to need it.
    But do:-
"Place your infant to sleep on their back.
Avoiding placing the infant on a soft surface, such as a regular mattress or couch.
Avoiding placing blankets, pillows, and stuffed animals with infant when they sleep.
Do not co-sleep with your infant.
Use thin clothing when putting your infant to sleep and avoid warm clothing and over bundling.
Avoid smoking, drugs, and alcohol while caring for an infant."

  • Hey mate, congrats! Since you've got time up your sleeve, make a point of stocking up on Huggies nappies whenever colesworth have them on half price. ("Thank You" are good too but in hindsight not worth the extra $ imo - also, they're not on sale as often as they used to be anyway). As for wipes, I've found that "Tooshies" are the best, by a big margin. Chemist Warehouse has the 6 packs, so head there for those.

  • Ear plugs and a second job.

Chickens for all the left food once the wee Seamus starts eating solids.

Also get some prescription benzos to keep the little shit quiet.

It can be hard to say sometimes, what works for 1 person might not be for another.

People told us the below were essential but we used them once or twice and never again.
Baby bath / seat bath - Easier in the sink, baby bath just holds the kids bath toys now.
Portacot - Baby didn't like, only slept on in the normal cot. It's now a ball pit for the kids.
    Bassinet - Same as above.
Change table - Was a PITA to go to the table all the time, just buy a mat and move it around.. really you can change them on the floor, bed, couch. Just have wipes and disposable change mats around the house.. you don't actually need to dispose of the mats unless you get shit every where.
Pacifiers - dont go out and pre buy heaps just 1, some like them, some don't.

    Essentials for us were:
NoseFrida - the BEST $20 you will ever buy hands down, dont worry about extra filters.
HEAPS of nappies, wipes, nappy rash cream, moisturiser
Car seat - I would get something that can both rear and front face, so will last you from baby all the way to when they change out to just a booster seat.
    Pram & Baby carrier
    Cot and baby sleeping bags.
    baby monitor
clothes - think weather appropriate for their age as in it will be summer for 0-3 months, 3-9 months winter, etc. I wouldnt buy onsies for over 1, its harder to change nappies / change only bits that get dirty.
    thermometer
high chair and bibs, pick the one thats simple and easiest to clean.

    and for yourself pornhub premium.

    • I'd say the change table is worth it to prevent back ache. I didn't get one because it figured I'd just change nappies on the bed but bending over for longish periods was straining the ol' back. The change table helps by having bub at the right height.

      • I sit on the bed with the baby to change the nappy. Just turn the baby so it's parallel to the edge of the bed rather than their legs pointed to the edge. Yes prep everything in advance and you won't need to move around.

        • We were given a change table and only used for the first few months as I had anxiety that the baby was gonna go over and fall. You’ll need one hand on the baby at all time. I just move the change mat everywhere in the house, mostly on the floor.

Please take your wife to see a GP for the morning sickness. There are medications that can be prescribed to ease the symptoms. Now is not the time to be avoiding food, the body requires nutrients to grow a healthy baby. And congratulations :)

Also, try to hold off buying anything just yet, it’s still early. You’ll find that family and friends will want to give you items, so wait and see what you get first, and then you can fill the gaps yourself.

Don’t forget to pop over to the automotive sub-forum and ask about what large, 7 seater AWD SUV you should buy…

    • Nappies: After trying many, ALDI brand (Mamia) wins by a long way.
    • Bathing: Get a tub but also consider showering, as in you hold the baby and jump in the shower. Works surprisingly well. Baby loves it. Get your wife to collect baby with a towel.
    • Bassinet: Pointless, just go straight to a cot. Follow the SIDS guidelines.
    • Capsule: People say its convenient to avoid waking up baby but in reality I think you would wake baby up 90% of the time. If you do get one consider renting from someone. I think Red Cross does it? Your local gov. might have a program.
    • Baby monitor: Unless you have a massive house with sound proofing its pointless and you'll have enough anxiety as it is without a 24/7 video feed so I'd skip it.

When you get home from the hospital don't forget to take care of yourself and ask for help if you need it, seriously.

Nappies - I find Huggies Ultimate the best for Size 1-2. But still using Ultra Dry's onwards happy enough not to change
Baby Wipes - Huggies Fragrance Free, is the thickest I've felt so far thats relatively cheap, thick enough not to roll or 'seep' through, which is SUPER important for a poopy baby
Nappy Cream - stick with Sudocrem
Baby Bottles - i've tried so many $$$ ones such as Medela, Nuk (hated this the most as the colic holes meant it goes everywhere when shaking), Philips. My favourite ones are actually the Dymples brand from Big W, at about $2 a bottle. Has never leaked and I shake it like a martini, every other one has leaked.
Baby cam - I just bought a Xiaomi and mounted it on the wall.
Pram - get one that can convert to a double, just in case. I got the City Select Lux on one of the Amazon specials for about $6xx.
Baby seat - Baby Love Ezy Switch $159 from Kmart/Baby Bunting for its extended rear facing, one of the very loved choices in the Child Restraints FB page.

Join your local Buy Nothing facebook group. I got so much baby clothes from there that I barely needed to buy any myself, also got bassinet , toys, books stuff like that. For cheap clothes, I went to op-shops and picked up items that were about $1 or $2 each, which is great as baby sleeping bags are crazy expensive.

If you are planning to bottlefeed then get a digital kettle and pair it with a flask. You will have a bottle in less than a minute compared to waiting forever for the bottle warmer. Also bottle warmers are a waste of money unless you are putting expressed milk in there.

Microwave steriliser - 2 mins in a microwave compared to boiling in a pot. pretty sure boiling wrecks the teats as well as my mum has messed up a few compared to me.

Instead of buying a baby carrier, go to a Babywearers Meeting (they should have facebook groups) and try diff ones out before plonking $$$ on one, some styles might not suit your baby. Personally my baby doesnt like to be in carriers so my husband carries her by hand all the time lol, $190 down the drain for me.

Get a few cot protectors, and when you put on your sheets go CP->sheet->CP->sheet so if bub has a middle of the night accident you just yank it off instead of dealing with putting on one in the middle of the night.

in terms of nausea, i found food with too much flavours or smells turns my stomach. I feel like i could really go for a pot of my mums chicken congee most of the times with a fried egg. Stick with the plainer foods.

One thing to keep in mind with the suggestions to stock up on nappies…. My first son didn’t even get through one box of newborn nappies before he grew out of them while my second son was in them for a little longer. I prefer to just grab them from Amazon when they are on sale. I got to know my Amazon delivery guy very well when I was on maternity leave! You can get just about everything on there!

    • +1

Agree. I find that one bulk box of newborn nappies should be enough unless the baby is born a little heavier hence will grow out of the newborn size quicker. They do go through nappies in the first month like crazy. If you find nappies going on sale at a crazy price, you can grab a few of the larger sizes to take advantage of the sale.

  • We were given a thermometer - might seem odd however is super handy for peace of mind (and to know if anything is a bit off!)

Ahh the over preparing that always occurs with baby 1 lol

      • We didn't buy everything on the list, it's just a list that's been passed along by people she works with. More a list of things you may want to consider depending on what you want.

  • +1

After 3 kids I would suggest the bare minimum before baby arrives and play it by ear.

Pack a hospital bag at 30 weeks (I left it to the end with the 3rd who arrived the day before the planned 'bag packing' day.)

You need a way to get the baby home from hospital - car seat or some other safe transport.

The baby needs feeding, if breastfeeding then breast pads are essential from day one, the rest can wait. Tin of formula, electric kettle, bottles and a bottle brush plus microwave steriliser if bottle feeding, again the rest can wait.

It will need somewhere to sleep - if you want to buy a pram, one with a bassinet attachment will last for the first 10-12 weeks giving you time to get a cot off Gumtree. Don't use a second hand cot mattress.

One person will be alone at home a lot with the baby. They need somewhere safe to put the baby while going to the toilet /cooking etc. Bathroom and kitchen floors are OK for a few seconds but again I would recommend the pram with bassinet attachment for this. Before you are a parent you don't realise that you really need a 24/7 line of sight to the baby.

You will be given soooo many clothes as gifts you may not even need to buy any.

Put some $ aside for a new washing machine in the first year, you will not believe how much more washing there will be. Each of my children has necessitated a replacement of the machine.

New parents' anxieties are a goldmine for people trying to sell you stuff. You don't need most of it.

  • I am gonna be Dad in December this year and I am very excited. This is going to be my first kid

Congratulations ! You are very blessed. It will be the best thing to ever happen in your life, also it gets better every month as they grow - take a metric s h i t tonne of photos and videos because time flies and every time you look back at the memories you'll wish you captured more.

    Essentials

Have the below irems ready and installed one month before expected due date. It will happen so quick you will not be ready to react and run around and grab things.

    • Hospital Bag - have this ready one month before due date. Wife's clothes and accessories, snacks, towel, make up etc.

    • Baby Backpack - nappies, spare clothes, dummy, wet wipes, single serve satches of formula (don't buy a tub as your little one may take to breast feeding very well), have a sanitised bottle just in case as some babies don't take to breast feedinf well and need formula very quickly just to keep them topped up till they latch.

    • Pram - Buy early

    • Car Seat - Install atleast 1 month out

    • Baby Clothes, Blankets, Bibs, Nappies, Soap

The rest of the stuff you can get after and as you need it. For example; you may not need a dummy till you know what bub is like, may not need a pack of bottles if they breast feed, may not need a cot as we just put him in a carrying bassinet between us as he woke up alot so a cot was useless. We got a cot 2 months later, after he settled .
