Please Help Me Find an Entertainment Unit with Many Slots/Compartments

I am looking for a long tv unit, that is suitable for a 75 inch tv.
It needs to have at least 6 slots, because I have an AV receiver, and many consoles. I would prefer 8 slots though.
I can't really find any good ones online though. I want one that's nice and modern, not too expensive.
I may accept 2 small units placed next to each other.
Thank you :)

    Check Ikea Besta.

    • I had a look at those, but they don't seem quite right for me.

      • Kallax?

        • Kallax is what i use, we got baskets for the bottom 4 spaces and it looks awesome
Better than a "traditional entertainment unit"

      • they don't seem quite right for me

How so? They're quite customisable. I've used Besta for our lounge room and family room.

        • I initially didnt realise they were so flexible, I thought it was just a couple options

  • A cube storage shelf could be okay, as long as it can easily hold a heavy tv, and the cubes can comfortably fit an original Xbox.

  • I think Ikea has an app where you can design your own. I haven't tried it personally. Maybe someone else with experience can elaborate.

measure and design one to suit take the drawing to local carpenter

    • Or bunnings, or tasker, or anyone with power tools. You can get a lot of design and building tips from youtube. Almost went through this process recently, ended up making plans for small storage boxes for cable management to sit alongside a TV stand i found well priced online.

    • not bad, but not enough open slots, too many doors/drawers

    • also quite pricey

  • I was in the same boat. I have a receiver, centre speaker, IQ2, Blu-ray player, PVR, Apple TV 4k & NUC HTPC that I wanted to have in the unit in 4 slots but it couldn't be 1800mm long because I didn't have the space for that long a unit. Also wanted some storage. I found that most long units weren't very tall & tall units weren't very wide either. Most manufacturer units don't have many compartments or they aren't big enough for a receiver or they use glass doors which is a heat problem with a receiver. I spent a long time looking at units & the ones that closest fit my needs were expensive. In the end I had a unit custom made from Jarrah. It wasn't cheap at $2300 but it's exactly what I wanted and it will last a lifetime and not that much more expensive than some manufacturer units. Also has very high WAF. My unit is 1700mm W (sitting on a 1600mm plinth) x 700 mm H x 500mm D.

I've got a 55" TV sitting on top of the unit with Elac Debut 2 D5.2 speakers each side, got a Elac Debut 2 C5.2 on back order to go in the unit. The receiver has it's own open slot with a rectangular cut out on the back for all the cables to go out. The Blu-ray, Apple TV & NUC go in one open slot and the PVR & IQ2 go in another open slot. The rest is storage behind two doors on the left and right of the unit with movable shelves in and a draw at the bottom in the middle. I recently changed over the receiver and it was about a good experience as you can get in this unit, previous unit it would have been a nightmare.

    • WAF?

Wife Approval Factor. ie Floor standing speakers have low WAF but sound great, small Bose Cube speakers sound shit yet have high WAF.

        • My google search returned "Web Application Firewall"

    • I've come to the same idea as you.

You can always DIY & I will base it on Chris Salome's design:

  • Second the Ikea Besta suggestion. The amount of customisation you can do is endless. As many shelves as you want etc

There is an online Besta designer thing that is quite user friendly and lists out the specific pieces you need to pick up from IKEA.

Otherwise you could go into any IKEA and head to the Besta section and one of the staff can even help you design one.

  • Does anyone know if the besta is made of crap chipboard wood?
I played with the planner, and came up with this design, which is exactly what I'm after. Though I wouldn't mind it slightly taller, so there's more room for accessing the consoles. https://imgur.com/35DJ0zX

There are two heights of frames, 38cm or the 64cm frame, I believe the frame you chose is the 38cm from the photo?

Yes, the BESTA like many of their more affordably priced furniture is made of chipboard wood which is to be expected with that price.

If you are looking for timber or quality wood, you would probably need to get it custom made but expect to pay top dollar I suppose.

    • Besta is particle board covered in MDF but quality is pretty good. We’ve had ours for nearly 3 years and still looks fine.

Also, I drilled holes in the backs with a hole saw to send cables through. For my Yammy receiver, I left the back off as it’s quite deep and wouldn’t fit with the back on.

Ok I tried it with the bigger size, looks good!
But at $300, I might be better off just buying a couple 2x2 cube shelves and bolting them together…

      • Highly depends on what you need I guess. We added glass doors on ours and made a tiny display with lighting. You can also add drawers or make it into a proper cupboard to conceal the stuff inside.

The nice thing about the Besta is the backing comes with "holes" to run through your cables and the top where you normally place the TV also has holes for wiring.

If you're not sure about the quality, should definitely head into IKEA to have a look to get an idea. They have heaps of unique combinations on display.

        • Thanks, Next time I head into Adelaide I'll have a look if I remember, and have time.

      • Depth is 40cm. The width of legs on a 65" TV is around 53cm.

  • I have the same issue. 65inch tv, and stands are 35cm wide. Most tv units are 40cm wide. The ones that are 50cm wide cost >$600 (Harvey Norman).

    Now thinking DIY.

I'm also looking at straps to anchor the tv at the back to the unit. I can't afford it toppling over.

    • I ended up getting the Kallax shelf from Ikea, has been working well. The slots are big enough to fit any console.
