Which Samsung phone to buy!? Help me choose!

Hi all!!
I have been watching all kinds of videos and readings reviews to upgrade from a Galaxy s8.

The more I see the more confused I am!

What are your experiences like?

Which ones would you recommend or not recommend!?

Edit - phone will be used mainly for browsing, calls, social media and watching stocks.

Minimal use of Camera and additional features.

Edit: Thank you all for your views! I going to look more into the A series phones. Conclusion is I am still undecided! Lucky I dont need one immediately!

Which ones would you recommend or not recommend!?

All this is useless if we don't know what you value in a phone. Battery life? Screen quality? Camera?

    • +1

      My bad! Updated now

You're only using basic tasks like internet, phone calls, social media and stocks?

You do NOT need a $1000+ Samsung flagship. Look into the Samsung M20 (and other similar Samsung phones). They have ridiculously good battery life, great screen and do everything you want it to do, AND they are very cheap (less than $250).

High quality and super cheap mid-range phones still exist. Look into the Samsung M20 and the other Samsung phones in its class.

  • Well, it'll depend on your budget and the size of your hands.

    • Budget not an issue for any of the phones listed above..hands size - Small :/

      • All the phones are pretty much the same except the Note 10 which comes with a pen. I'd personally go the S20 since it's the latest "small" flagship. But only when it's on sale at about $900-$1000 (or less).

        • Ah thank you! Hopefully some specials coming up soon

  • +3

    The cheapest one

If you are not using the camera much, and use it mostly to stare at the screen, why not get an A50 or A70? Good large screen, Samsung phone, but not ridiculously expensive like the S-series or Note.
If you still have a uni email address, check pricing with the education portal. There's 5% additional EOFY discount. Unfortunately the $50 newsletter discount has ended.

    • I might be able to sign up for the commercial partnership. Greay idea re the A series. I forgot about those.

      • Ebay plus will have the a70 for $299 tomorrow

        • What!? How have I missed this?

Edit - just saw the post. These ebay posts are too hard to score.

I would recommend to avoid the exynos versions and stick to snapdragon processors.

…and lose Samsung Pay, Australian Consumer Law Coverage, and the likes as a result of buying an international/imported model? Not worth it IMO.

      • Fair enough, I didn't realise they didn't ship SD anymore to Aus. My last samsungs were the note4 and s3. My concern is the decreased battery life.
Would google pay be possible with the imported SD versions?

      • The A90 has a Snapdragon 855 a massive battery and 5G and it's sold here. Might be worth a look

It makes little difference to "normal" users. Yes, the benchmarks show a difference, but these benchmarks may not be very reflective of every-day use, and perhaps only a gamer may notice the difference. I can truthfully say that Ozbargain has performed the same on the last 4 phones I had, which really is all anyone should care about.

      • +2

Fair, but the tests have shown a fairly large difference in battery life in favour of the snapdragon chip, i think it was as much as 10-15% longer? which can be quite significant over a day.

        • About 1 hr difference from memory

    • I actually did look into it but its not an option for local warranty. I bght oneplus7t recently from overseas and the screen cracked with one drop. Now i m stuck with it as no replacement screena avilable in Melbourne. Hence going to local stock

S10e, has all the new stuff but is the smaller size of an S7

    • +1

excellent phone, have one. But currently out of stock

  • +1

Me too! Looking to upgrade my samsung galaxy s7 as it can't go through a day without 3 charges! Would like to know what you go with. I don't really care about much features, just big battery life but fits in my girl pockets (why so small?!)

I had an s8 as well and upgraded to a note 10 plus which was on sale last December. I have smaller hands though the s-pen + sd card was a must and the price was too good to refuse. I reckon the s20 would suit you well for what you need and is a great choice upgrade from the s8.

    • s20 seems.to be where the votes are!

  • +1

As you dont want to do much like gaming, videos etc, S10e would be great for you but the only problem is it is out of stock

    • Dont know much about 10e. I will look into it.

Why restrict yourself to one brand? You'll miss out on good deals like
    LG G8S ThinQ 128GB 4GX (Telstra Variant, Unlocked) $499 @ JB Hi-Fi

Its so I dont get even more confused!

      • +1

What's there to get confused about?

        • If i startlooking at all androids it will take forever to decide. I do know there are several awesome options. So going with the "better the devil you know" kinda policy. Keep it to one brand and keep it simple. And yet here I am with a poll :)

          • @Bargainhunter83: You don't have to look at all android phones. That deal has 109 votes, so the community has basically done the work for you.

It's got a SnapDragon 855 which is more than capable of what you need, plus a 2 year warranty.

I have been using Samsung for many years… my current s8+ is so good that I am keeping it.

But… I may change to Apple iPhone 12…. I want an iWatch and AirPods Pro.

    • Considering Samsung is not releasing SD in Australia anymore makes you wanna switch too!

  • Id buy a Galaxy

  • As others have mentioned - the models you mention are overkill based on what you say you do.

I'm personally a big Pixel fan so I'd recommend the 3a for you. There's nothing confusing about it. Plain stock Android - immediate updates - best camera for the price as an added bonus and smashes the price of any of the models you have mentioned.

If it MUST be Samsung (and again really don't get it mate it's all marketing like for like they're not good VALUE (note I said nothing about features)) the Samsung A series are more than enough for your needs and much better value than the S series in my opinion.

    Ed.

    • Havent looked into Pixel. But I will.

      • I too am in the same situation. Got s8+ n want to upgrade. Thinking of 3axl but would miss sd card n wireless charging. Been waiting for pixel 4a cos might come 12gb n wireless charging. Dont know if can deal with small screen though. The Big screen mostly for kids. hoping to get note 10+ for less than $1200 but doubt it.

        • It might just if you sign.up to the edu/gov partnership programs if you have the access.

        • Just out of curiosity - what do you use an SD card for?

Genuine question, not trolling. I admit I normally get 128Gb versions of phones but with cloud backup of all photos and videos now I'm never more than 50% full and could probably get away with 64Gb if I watched what I installed.

Is SD card just a left over of mindsets when we used to not have cloud storage and people are actually still storing media on their phone (which can actually be quite risky)?
