Same $499, I would go with Oppo Reno 10xZoom, which was posted last month.

  • Hey Guys, want to confirm if someone knows - is this dual sim standby? Have a feeling as it s a Telstra variant the 2nd sim even though it may state as dual sim may not be able to be used?

    • +1

Yes that's correct, it's the Telstra Variant so not dual sim. Confirmed in the last post for this phone.

      • Thanks for letting me know that mate.

        • +1

You could try your luck pricematching the dual sim with Good Guys though… I suggest you might do best going in store.

  • I went with a refurb Galaxy Note 9 for the same $. Coming from LG V30 and Pixel 2XL it's a more complete package. If you compare real world performance instead of specs, value proposition is Xiaomi Note 9 Pro at $360ish.

  • Omg huge notch, no thanks

I bought this phone in the last deal (at $599). Great phone for the money, good battery life, great cameras, fantastic OLED screen. already had 2 big software updates (no Android 10 yet though). Came across from Iphone 6. Very happy with it so far.

  • is it better to pay an extra $100 and get the Mate 20 Pro?

  • +4

who else think the same, LG phones quality has significantly improved and they have dominated the low cost market with these high end phones

  • Great value. I'm pretty happy with mine overall, it's a bit too good for my needs, if anything, I probably could have spent less and had something still very good.

  • Anyone happen to know when this deal ends?

  • Got one for my dad. Surprised to get a SD855 in this price range - this is equivalent to that in the Note 10 plus last year (USA model). Only downside is the battery, but the 1080p screen should help there.

    Thanks for sharing.

Maybe a v50 deal will follow after this one in a week or so, like last time.

The G8S is a great phone for the money though, it's basically the v50 with a few cost saving features - no DAC, 5G radio, lower res screen (although by default v50 is set to the same lower res) and some gimped features to make premium models stand out like degrading the camera.
The clunky feature of touchless control with the TOF camera, and the reason for the laughingly huuuuuuge notch (v50 doesn't have this, so its laughingly wide notch is slightly narrower) may find some use in our covid19 aware lives, but it needs further development.

    Summary:

    The good points
    SD855 CPU
Bluetooth 5, Au LTE bands, NFC
    micro SD Expansion
    Wireless chanrging
    IP68 water resist
    AMOLED FHD 6.2 inch screen
    181g lower weight
    headphone jack
    2 yr LG Au warranty
Getting Android 10 soon (if not already)
    Reasonable cameras, downgraded optics
    TOF camera for touchless operation

    The not so good
The stain of Telstra branding in the model. While there are no splash screens, just a few removable apps, telco branding is never an improvement. Ever.
quite wide - can be harder to operate in one hand (76.6mm wide)
inefficient packaging - wider body than v30 yet it has a narrower screen
Seriously irritating PWM (low frequency flicker for dimming control) in the screen
    laughably wide notch. seriously.

    The missing
    the Quad DAC
better optics/camera of the G8, and the better imager of the v60
    better TOF implementation

    • no dual sim on this phone

  • Is this made in south korea?

    • Yes, The Telstra variant is made in South Korea

  • Do we think this will be compatible with 10% off for first responders?

  • Is it worth getting this coming from a V30+?

    • +1

Not in my opinion - its a downgrade in many respects (screen res, single sim, no DAC, thicker, heavier, narrower screen in a wider body), especially the ridiculously enormous notch and huge radii for the overly rounded corners yet in a thick boxy glass body.
Not to mention the industrial strentgh PWM it flashes its display with. Literally, brought tears to my eyes.
To round it off, it is a Telstra branded model, a burden that will follow it for the term of its natural life - so slower updates, the likelihood of being abandoned for support, unwanted Telstra apps in the firmware, and so on.

There is a screen comparison between the 2 here:
Just check out that notch and the overly round corners LOL.

      Think of
Battista Pinnin Farina vs Jan Wilsgaard

I still cannot believe that notch.

      • Wow you're right that notch is horrendous in that screen comparison!

It's probably almost as bad on the Mate 20 Pro too

  • Comes with Android 9 or 10? or if update is avaliable???

    • Android 9, should update to 10 soon

      • Good luck chasing LG then….

    • comes with 9

    • Italian press release in January is all we've got I think. I thought it was third but on rechecking "last quarter" - assuming it's the same for aus, and assuming it's the same for the telstra variant!

  • Would it be fair to say this is one of the "best" phones in the $400-500 bracket at this point in time?

Or something else better to wait for?

    • +1

I don't think you'll be able to find another phone with an SD855 in this price range.

exceptional price for what you get!

      • Awesome, thanks for the heads up!

  • How do people find the form factor?

Is it too wide and difficult for single handed use?

    • Personally I find it a little too big for single handed use, with the supplied free case, but my hands are pretty small so might not be the case for you. As a comparison, my hands can barely manage to use my Xiaomi Mi 9 SE with a single hand, except it's got a very slim case on.

The G8S has a mini view option where you can swipe the navigation bar to make the screen smaller for single handed use, but I don't use it as it feels a bit weird for me.

  • Can this be used on a Telstra prepaid plan?

    • Yes

      • Why does it say postpaid on the actual website? Sorry for the dumb question.

        • That's actually a good question. I have no idea why they have that written on there.

  • I have one brand new if anyone wants it pls pm me.

    • Wow free phone! I will have it thanks.
