LG G8S Thinq 128GB 4GX (128GB/6GB) Black (Telstra Branded, Network UNLOCKED) $499 Free C&C/ $4.99 Delivery @ JB Hi-Fi

1000

Good price considering the spec, dropped AUD value, and that it's on parity with V40's ongoing lowest price, and arguably better than the previous deal's $99+OneMonthCharge+$390BreakContractFee strategy

The model is LM-G810EA, Telstra branded, network UNLOCKED. Here is the official manual if anyone is interested: http://gscs-b2c.lge.com/downloadFile?fileId=36uYwtIy1L7NG5p9…

NOTE: While claiming to be dual SIM and having two SIM slots in specification, it is reported (thanks pete2) to only have single SIM working. The Telstra branded device is actually a SINGLE SIM variant, with the hybrid SIM/microSD Slot 2 really being just a microSD slot.

Spec copied from JB HiFi (or official spec here):

    • Personally the incremental upgrades (with other trade offs) of the G8S are not really worth it. The G7 is still a very capable device, often on par and in some areas better. If upgrading from a G6, sure it can be worthwhile, but G7, I couldn't personally justify it, unless it is like a trade swap and pay $50-$100.

Quick spec comparison between G7 and G8S: https://m.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=9115&idPhone2=9…

Heads up - this phone does NOT have Dual SIM.
You can put two SIM cards in, but the second one (the one that is the SD tray) does not work.
I suspect this is due to this phone being a Telstra model, and only has one IMEI.

    • Thanks, I'll note that in the OP.

  • im interested in this or the v40 or pixel 4a when it comes out. hoping to change from my S8+

  • Guys, I need advice on which phone to buy this weekend as my LG G6 battery is dying.

    LG G8S for $499 or Samsung A70 for $452.

    • +2

see my long comment above; A70 not water resistant, no wireless charging, gorilla glass 3 (LG is 5), plastic frame, (LG is aluminium),
      here is the comparison link

      • Thanks!

        I ordered LG G8S today.

Now buying a screen protector and a wireless charging pad.

        • no worries, so did I. Let me know what you find!

    • +1
    • Where are you getting an A70 for that price?
Anyway in terms of advice - Software is usually very subjective and I don't know anything about LG's software so I won't comment on that, but looking purely at specs, the LG G8s has better:
      * CPU and GPU
      * Screen
      * Waterproofing (IP68 as opposed to none)
      * Camera
      * Speakers
      * Headphone jack
      * Wireless charging (it has it, the A70 doesn't)

By contrast, the A70 has better:
      * Battery (by a long way - faster charging, and it's larger)
      * Price

Went for a click and collect yesterday, been using this phone all day yesterday and today. I must say the $500 investment was worth it. It is a great phone

  • Just wanted to counter some of pete2's observations which may or may not apply to this deal.

I have a G8S I got in December from The Good Guys on their Telstra "JB HiFi $65 plan" here

    Model is LM-G810EAW
It is made in China (rather than Korea)
It is dual SIM (with dual IMEI)
There were no Telstra apps pre installed from memory.
Software version is Android 9, v10e-AUS-XX (I'm really hanging for Android 10)

So I'm unsure if TGG/JB have different stock, or if there is a lottery of models, but I would have assumed they would sell the same Telstra stock.

    • +1

The model from JB-HiFi I got was the LM-G810EA, and only had one IMEI on the box.
I would be interested to see if somewhere like The Good Guys would price match this deal - apart from the obvious benefet of dual SIM, the LMG810EAW is the Euro spec model and has been unlocked via LG developer site, and could possibly be rooted, third party ROMS etc.

      • Generally the non branded models have better support too. Considering the EAW model firmware is on v10e but the EA model is only on v10b.

Does the one you have says anywhere on the box about Dual SIM capability? As that can be one of the things that can let you return the phone, if it doesn't do as advertised (at least not as advertised on its website), if the user actually wants dual SIM capability.

        • Actually, the EA model updated 3 times in the end - it got up to v10d.
There is no mention of Dual SIM anywhere on the box. The label states:

          (Left Side)
          LM-G810EA
          IMEI: (IMEI number)
          (IMEI Barcode)

          S/N: (Serial Number)
          (Serial Number Barcode)

          (Right Side)
          MADE IN KOREA
          <128GB>
TEL (perhaps this is the clue of the Telstra model)
          (Barcode maybe SKU)
          MIRROR BLACK

          • @[Deactivated]: Thanks for the info!

So basically the Telstra branded variant is practically a single SIM model, with the hybrid SIM/microSD slot really being just a microSD slot.

            • @zrmx: Yes, I think so. The manual linked above shows it as just an SD card slot, although a second SIM actually fits in it just fine but I think its function has been disabled one way or another.

          • @[Deactivated]: Ok, interesting to see.

Mine has two IMEIs on the box. And instead of saying TEL, it says AUS, so must be a non-carrier variant.

I think the JB HiFi site does not intend to advertise it as a dual sim model, as it is not mentioned in the product description or title, and it was probably an oversight putting it in the details. And it is definitely said to be 'Telstra variant only'.

The LG site doesn't state dual SIM for the G8S, and the LM-G810EAW isn't listed on the LG Australia site.

            • @jwh: It used to list the EAW model, I remember seeing it before months ago when I was researching for phones (unless confirmation bias is just telling me that I do remember). They've removed it now as I don't think they are still actively marketing the G8S (make ways for the new V and G series model I suppose).

The support page still exists though: https://www.lg.com/au/support/support-mobile/lg-LMG810EAW (with manual pdf that just says "AUSTRALIA" without any telco: http://gscs-b2c.lge.com/downloadFile?fileId=pZtZrE03AZScjxwz…).

              • @zrmx: Thanks for that, looks like this particular model has definitely been put out to pasture with a short life cycle.

In saying that, I am quite happy with it coming from an iPhone 8+, just disappointed it still doesn't have Android 10.

                • @jwh: The G8S'es are on schedule to get Android 10 in Q3 this year, although I wouldn't be surprised if it gets delayed to Q4/end of the year.

But at least it is still going to get one and hopefully the current/future builds are stable. Reading how Xiaomi's Android One firmware updates are a big horrid soup, I'm starting to think a stable build is probably more important especially there isn't that much improvement in the new Android version (my device is LCD screen).

          • +2

@[Deactivated]: This is a good comparison of both models https://www.phonemore.com/compare/phones/lg-g8s-thinq-g810ea…
Looks like the LM-G810EAW is the world model, with dual sims and 4G bands 12 and 32 additional to the LM-G810EA

            https://www.phonemore.com/models/lg/g8s-thinq/

    • It could be the different models, and maybe LG has finished clearing the W model (guessing it is non branded variant) and they are now clearing the branded model.

Edit: just checked the spec of the one that MobileCiti sells, also an EA model but actually says unbranded.

Looks like LG has both models in Australia with some used for telco branding (and unsurprisingly telcos usually doesn't want dual SIM capabilities).

  • +1

Ooh tempting to buy this as opposed to a renewed S9+ off Amazon for the same price - can someone provide opinions/advice? I've seen lots about A70/A71/A90 comparisons haha

  • +2

Damn, I only bought this because I thought they were dual SIM. Doesn't works for me now :(

    • -1

Hell, yeah. I was super keen on this until now (not dual SIM). Damn.

  • Is there a screen protector on it in the box?

    • No, there is no protection film on the phone, or in the box.

      • Dam, good luck finding one in Perth then

  • I spoke with someone at The Good Guys and they said they wouldnt price match with JB as theirs is not Telstra branded.

    • Yeah I just tried to price match at Auburn and failed

  • I'm going to return this phone now :( shame it's not dual SIM. It's a great phone btw

  • I double checked another JB HiFi, they got the stock out and yes single IMEI (so single SIM) maked with TEL on the box, then walked over to the Good Guys, they had a G8S on display, I verified it had dual SIM in the settings, and in the about phone section, Hardware Info -it shows Model Number LM-G810EAW, so maybe handsets from TGG will be a better bet for those wanting Dual SIM functionality - hopefully they can do it for better than $698 though…

  • I'm not too fussed about dual sim capabilities. Would still be able to put in an extra SD card for storage along with the primary sim?

Also, this version JB's selling would bands work properly in South Korea?

    • +1

Yes, I tested the G8s with a 512GB SD and it worked fine.

    • +1

The bands should work if carriers have band 1,2,3,4,5,7,8

  • +5

Picked up one this afternoon. I was originally going to get a cheap Chinese phone, but after using a G6 for the last couple of years, it's better the devil you know. In saying that, I haven't had one issue with the G6 apart from some screen burn.

As others have said, this is the LM-G810EA variant and has no branding except for the 2 Telstra apps pre-loaded which should be able to be removed. There's also an OTA update straight out of the box. I got the $5 screen protector from K-Mart - https://www.kmart.com.au/product/iphone-xs-max-glass-screen-… It's almost perfect, but has a bit of a halo around the edges. Will do until I can find the correct one. I also bought this case from Amazon - https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B07W1HK1LV/ref=ppx_od_d… But to be honest, the one that comes with it is perfectly fine.

I originally got the LG6 for the Quad DAC, but I haven't used wired headphones for ages. The aptXHD is where this phone shines. Buy yourself some aptXHD capable headphones like the Soundpeats or whatever and use PowerAmp to listen to music. Play around with the audio settings in PowerAmp and makes sure everything is set to full quality and the sound is on par, if not better than the wired headphones.

    • How is the screen? I have a G6 and Im on the fence as the the G8S has a lower resolution of 1080 vs 1440.

      • +1

Looks fine to me, I can't see a lot of difference to be honest. The phone is obviously a lot snappier though and a definite upgrade.

    • Hi Kouta43, does it come with an australian standard type-I power plug? Hopefully I dont need to buy a power plug adpator to charge the phone.

      • Yes it does. It's exactly the same as the one that came with my G6 and I presume other Australian LG phones.

        Model: MCS-H06AP
        Input: 100-240V-50/60Hz 0.5A
        Output: 1.8A or 5.0V = 1.8A

It comes with a USB cable and also some headphones. But as I said before, ditch those and get something like these - https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B079PQZ5PS?ref_=pe_2361882_2952…
I have those personally and they sound great, they have a very similar sound profile to the old Sennheiser CX300-II. There are no doubt better ones out there though and it's all down to personal preference I guess. But I can't fault them at all.

    • My G6 has started to screen burn heaps lately.

Started about a year ago with the always on display and now if I have a screen opened or on without any movement for too long it burns in for a while.

      • Yeah, pretty much exactly what has happened to mine. You can really notice the always on display burn and the address bar of the browser I use at the top. It's not a huge deal really and not the main reason I wanted to replace it. The update to 9 certainly helped the battery life again, or I would have ditched it earlier than now. But I just noticed it was starting to get a bit bogged down when using a few apps I was using at the same time. Factory reset may have helped a bit, but it is a 3 year old phone at the end of the day.

        • You just described my G6 down to a tee lol. Still working alright and has lasted way longer than my old htc M8 did, which was a great phone at the time. V50 has just been put onsale at JB for $599 but bit out of my reach at the moment.

  • Does it come with Australian standard battery charger which goes to a normal socket?

    Thanks

    • Yes, it comes with an LG charger with a USB A connection socket + a USB A to C cable

      • Thanks Pete. How abt the plug?
        Is it type-I power plug?

        Ordered one yesterday, decent price

        • I actually haven't checked.

  • Torn between getting this or waiting for the v50 to go down in price.

My G6 is still working fine (for now, touch wood), every now and then I clean up any apps i'm no longer using and run smart doctor and that seems to improve the battery life a bit.

Partner has a v30+ plus which we got for $399 in October last year also from JB.

Thoughts on the v50 dropping below $600 this year?

  • I'm interested in this but have a concern regarding Android 10 upgrade which from reports won't come out until later this year. Does it rely on Telstra releasing Android 10 for the specific firmware version? Is there any chance it won't release Android 10?

    • Going by comments in the post and current firmwares available for this device in other regions (https://lg-firmwares.com/lg-lmg810ea-firmwares/) it does look like the updates will go through Telstra and Telstra is lagging behind at the moment.

Current available firmwares in other regions suggest the latest one is v10e or one ending with _0210 which is released in March for other regions. However Telstra also has got more releases out compared to other regions (4 vs 3), so not sure if the delay is related to covid (as it looks like v10e was a March release for other regions). Nonetheless, as it is a LG, it'll be a slow wait if firmware update is important for you.

      • I ordered the phone.

Just wondering what the main disadvantages of Telstra releasing in later than other carriers are. Is it simply a matter of having to wait longer or is the 10 update so important that a few months wait will make it inefficient compared to other phones with the update? I'm just not knowledgeable on the technical side, lol. I'm just happy to be upgrading from a 4-year old phone.

        • +1

Yea the main disadvantage with a carrier associated device will be the often extra time for carrier (in this case Telstra) to roll out the update. So simply a matter of having to wait longer. The worst case scenario would be Telstra abandoning/giving up rolling out the update, though considering the age of the device and update history, it is unlikely.

For people that enjoy latest features, updates may be important.

For general users, the roll-out of updates may not be as important (many users still on Android v9 aka Pie and still fine), as the phone and its features are already present for all the things it was advertised for. The phone will function and be usable just fine, as it is already now.

Firmware updates enable you to get extra features that the future Android system may bring in the future, but a lack of firmware update doesn't exactly take anything away.

          • @zrmx: Thanks for the detailed response! Hope Telstra can get their act together.

        • +2

The main disadvantage is they may not release updates that other users get.
For example the LG G5 H850K Telstra gave up on supporting it well before LG did, and never provided the update to Android Oreo that non-Telstra handsets got.
To add insult to injury the bootloader is locked, so owners cannot even flash third party ROMs.

          • @[Deactivated]: Damn, I guess time will tell. They should definitely give users a ln estimated time of completion so we have an idea of when it may be released. What's the point of releasing a variant that won't be promised reliable future updates? Uggh..

  • I bought this - it arrived today and it is great. So a big thank you to the OP.

    • same mine arrived today on toll priority

        • Thanks for clarifying that 😌

    • -3

V40 is a better phone if you want an LG Android. About $580 on Amazon right now.

      • +7

V40 is older, has lower CPU, lower GPU, lower battery capacity…?

Only thing it has going for it is it's larger screen, and higher resolution? Which with the smaller batter probably doesn't fare it well in longevity.

        • The V40 also has the Quad DAC going for it. If you want audiophile levels of music quality (using wired headphones) then the V30, V40 or the V50 is your best choice. The G8s doesn't come with a Quad Dac.

          • @TheNewDeal: wow really?! luckily scored the v50 deal earlier then and with a dual screen….bonus!! :)

            • @homersyd: yes the v50 was the better deal. but no Android 10

              • @neonlight: yea tat's the weird part, cos the rest of the world already have android 10 for V50 just not in Aus…bloody telstra!

            • @homersyd: Yup! The Lg G8S does have a DAC but it's just the standard audio processor that all Snapdragon 855 processors come with https://www.qualcomm.com/products/wcd9340

It's good but definitely not up to the standard of the Quad DAC (especially in terms of the power output of the Quad DACs).

              • +1

                @TheNewDeal: yea i would know mate cos I have the V20, V30 and now V50 :)

                • @homersyd: I've got the V35 (waited months to find a second hand one at a good deal because I wanted the V40's processor but in a smaller phone), and it's amazing. It's a shame that the V series phones are so massive now.

                  • @TheNewDeal: Yea I tried look for the V35 too but they were US phones…and most sounded dodgy (IMEI issues)…so gave up and got the V30 instead locally. I know what you meant, but i think they've all gone taller but narrower - I prefer the older/slightly wider aspect ratio so you dont get black bars when watching videos…

    • +4

Good price for the specs, I wouldn't buy one if you want constant updates.

      • What would you buy?

        • -2

An phone from the dark side: iPhone
Lots of updates and Apple do eventually killed off certain iOS versions forcing people to upgrade iOS.

        • Google or Samsung

          • @[Deactivated]: Google, but it isn't just all Pros without Cons. You do get regular updates and tend to be the first to get the latest major Android OS updates, but you do end up beta testing for rest of the Android users as some of the apps do need updates when a new major OS is released. To be fair though, it is just the same with iOS if you always go for the latest iOS release.

Also, firmware update supports do end and some older Google devices are on not so great releases of Android. Google still cut off support on a fixed date, rather than at a stable release.

        • I am in the same boat with my Mi Mix 3 5G still no major updates. My V20 only got one update the time i had it. At least my mi mix gets random updates to music and browsers and security and other apps plus stability updates and battery stuff. I would like Android 10 on it.
When i had Sony phones they where always getting updates.
