LG G8S Thinq 128GB 4GX (128GB/6GB) Black (Telstra Branded, Network UNLOCKED) $499 Free C&C/ $4.99 Delivery @ JB Hi-Fi

1000

Good price considering the spec, dropped AUD value, and that it's on parity with V40's ongoing lowest price, and arguably better than the previous deal's $99+OneMonthCharge+$390BreakContractFee strategy

The model is LM-G810EA, Telstra branded, network UNLOCKED. Here is the official manual if anyone is interested: http://gscs-b2c.lge.com/downloadFile?fileId=36uYwtIy1L7NG5p9…

NOTE: While claiming to be dual SIM and having two SIM slots in specification, it is reported (thanks pete2) to only have single SIM working. The Telstra branded device is actually a SINGLE SIM variant, with the hybrid SIM/microSD Slot 2 really being just a microSD slot.

Spec copied from JB HiFi (or official spec here):

We have posts about $500+ Chinese phones and hardly anyone complains about updates when Chines manufacturers ARE the worst in regard with updates.

        • I'm finding myself agreeing, but LG has been making it hard in blocking that lol.

But yea, at least I agree for low and mid range devices, Chinese Android phones are the worst in terms of keeping Android OS updates. Although the other players aren't far off, quite a bit of forced obsolescence.

    • +6

IMO LG hasn't made really exciting phone in some time. They are fine but not exciting. Not having good Android support hurts too

      • +2

They drop in price much quicker though and that makes them a really good buy. Look at this, 2019 flagship grade for $499 and doesn't have to go through Vodafone deal like Pixel 4.

        • Yeah they are a good value buy much sooner than the equivalent Sammy phone but the lack of updates really hurt it. Some buyers will see that as not a big deal but if those are the type of buyers that buy LG phones (and after the drop in price) then it's hard to say if it's sustainable for LG.

      • +1

i think android phones overall haven't been exciting. LG's dual screen thing (G8X, V60) is actually the most exciting part for me, but they don't seem to ever be releasing in Aus.

Also really liked Asus' take on design on the ROG phone, but also rare and expensive AF.

        • I was tossing up the dual screen variant but the dual screen impliemnntation is apparently really mediocre, I also don't like the hinged design. This one at least has local warranty

    • +2

I bought this on the last deal. It's hardly the best phone on the planet, but for the price I would argue it's worth every dollar of $499.

    • +2

      This is still android 9
Please be aware that LG are slack with updates.
My Australian bought G3 (d855) never received all the updates (only some countries got all the updates).

This price is great for a snapdragon 855 (and combine with discounted JB gift cards), I am so tempted to pull the trigger…

      • +1

Why do people become Update Wh0res? I am using Pixel 3a and i reject updates popups everytime i see one on the screen.

        • +6

          Security, for one?

        • +1

You can only get away with not updating for so long, then things stop working and/or newer apps/features are not available

          • @LoungeLizard: Like? I've got a Android 5.1 device and I can't recall anything missing compared to one running 9.

        • You dont like Android security updates?

        • Ask v50 users. Android 10 adds widescreen option to use both screens allowing apps to use both screens at the same time.

          • @neonlight: Cool. Now I am really upset that I miss the v50 deal 🤣

    • +1

I guess this has been discounted because LG are announcing a successor phone today nicknamed LG Velvet. Most details of this new phone have been leaked already.

      • +1

It regularly goes on sale. They seem to rotate between the V30, V40, V50 and G8.

    • +4

Nah, I will give it a miss. My order was cancelled by JBHIFI when I ordered LG V50 ThinQ Dual Screen a couple of weeks ago saying that you cannot supply it anymore and yet you have it again on your website? Load of BS JBHifi.

    • If you want a perfectly solid phone from a physical retailer, I'd recommend. Got this last deal and honestly haven't regretted it (although I don't like the fact that you can't change to gesture controls as far as I can see).

    • +1

Using the LG G7 ThinQ - never missed a beat!

    • +1

Shame Australia got this watered-down version instead of the proper G8, which has more features and better specs.

    • +4

This is seriously a bargain for SD855 alone. And some people are willingly to pay $450+ for a Chinese phone with a Mediatek processor or to grey-import a phone with inferior Qualcomm SoC. Crazy.

    • +1

Guys, how is this compared to Mi 9T?

      • I bought the Mi 9T when it was $399. It would be hard to go back to a notch screen, they look so dated.

GSM Arena Comparison This isn't perfect - Mi 9T does have always on display.

        • +1

yeah $399 is a good deal. From what I see here LG is a good deal even at this price of $499? Tempting…

      • This is exactly I said above. LG G8S has the last year's flagship chipset by Qaulcomm - SD855. Mi 9T has an inferior chipset of SD730. Of course, LG G8S is better in terms of horsepower. This LG deal is a steal.

In fact, Samsung A71 which has exactly the same chipset with Mi 9T and probably the better support within Australia is selling at Samsung Education Store less than Mi 9T is officially sold for in Australia. I mean it is crazy that people don't realize how expensive Chinese phones have become.

    • Why is everyone so obsessed about updates? What's wrong with Android 9? I didn't update my last phone for like 3 or 4 years, and it was on android 5 or 6 I think, and it worked fine. Do android versions have a use-by-date or something?

      • Security updates are crucial in keeping your phone data safe.

        • +2

Or just don't be silly with going onto shady sites? Shouldn't it already be pretty safe by the time it's released?

          • +1

@nuttapillar: Agree good basic hygiene goes a long way.

There are other security problems beyond shady sites. Say connecting to a public hotspot (at a shopping mall or hotel, etc) - potentially other hackers on the network trying to gain access to steal important data.

Exploits accumulated over time so the older the security patches the bigger the attack surface.

      • +1

And here I am on Android 8 on my HTC10 still going strong.

      • +1

Yep just what you've said. New app simply wouldn't work in older Android version, for example covidsafe app requires Android 6 and above. However I'm agree with you that nothing wrong for version 1 or 2 behind, just stay vigilant on latest security issues that's all it needs.

    • Cannot support LG anymore, using V30 for a year now and the screen has random artifacts and long black/coloured streaks when it's hot, when it's cool, it's clear.

Also, USB to the computer to look at files doesn't work anymore.

Many issues like that online. Never had those issues with any Samsung phone. Sometimes it pays to get a better brand, with better QC.

      • try google how to turn on "USB debugging" to fix the connection to PC issue

        • Didn't work. Tried for weeks searching everything. Looks like the USB-C port is damaged somehow. Sigh.

      • Sometimes you have to unlock the phone for contents to show. And yes, try revoking authorisations to the PC.

Agree tho - dealing with LG support for my V20 (one of my favourite phones ever) was a complete nightmare.

I only stayed with LG for the G6 and V30 because of the Quad-DAC and Wide angle camera, but now almost everyone does wide angle and I use a Dragonfly for the DAC.

Their lack of OS updates is also another thing.

        • I tried going through their support. Wanted me to spend $15 to send for repairs and if they didn't find a fault, I would have to pay $125 + $15 for them to send it back. LOL, might as well cut my losses and get a new phone.

      • yup same here, all kinds of wierd issues, more painful than anything else really.
With computer USB connection there is a trick to it - once you plug it in, on the phone slide to charge only and then back to file share. Works every time :)

        • The issue is, when you plug via USB, it keeps disconnecting and reconnecting non-stop, tried multiple USB cords, just something wrong with the USB-C port. Charges fine though. Oh well.

    • Anyone have real world experience comparing the cameras on this with the LG g7? I have a G7 which I love (I had a nokia 7 with android one for maximum updates, but the thing would not run many of the apps I use) and my wife has my old G4 which still is going great and never bootlooped although I have replaced the battery twice. Just thinking it might be a nice upgrade for mothers day.

      • +1

Specs wise, they are a bit different. g8s has slightly wider lenses for both standard wide and ultra wide (+ a telephoto lens). Due to the larger pixel size in the sensors, the megapixels actually decreased in g8s. The apertures for the wide and ultra wide are slightly inferior (so the pixel increase and the slightly inferior aperture even each other out a bit). G8s' low light photos could be better than g7's (really need to test it to be sure). Front camera is the same lens, but G8s adds a TOF depth sensor.

For video recording, it appears LG allows g8s to do 240fps @ 1080p now. g7 is limited to 720p for 240fps.

There are other differences which matter though. g8s, due to it being designed to work better with the dual screen attachment, dropped the resolution to 1080p. It is an OLED screen (which works better if you are into HDR videos, but it does have colour shift). LG g7 is quite bright and probably is the last great IPS screen based phones from LG. The discounted g7 model JB used to sell has less RAM and ROM (storage), but has dual SIM support. This g8s has no dual SIM support.

      • I have a G7 and I would love to update to the G8 but… I cannot fault the G7. Yep, 'only' an IPS screen, but it's as bright as my brother's Galaxy S9. Great camera, terrific sound, expandable/or dual SIM, absolutely reliable.
But as this price, get the Mrs a G8, and I hope she had a happy mothers day!

    • Why is this reasonably priced compared to samsung and iPhone? If I was in the market for a new phone then I'd get this because of the specs and price. Why else would you spend more.

      • to brag about having a samsung or apple branded phone i guess. It's all the rage these days. Some people have more dollars than sense…

    • +1

If this was the international version with the Quad DAC this would be a killer deal. Alas we got a gimped version of the phone, so LG can take a hike.

      • V50 might be the last phone i will buy from LG due to dual screen, Quad DAC, SD855 SoC.

Last of Android 10 does hurt but $599 is excellent price better than typical chinese phones

    • As the V50 is now also listed back on JB, albeit in limited quantities and delivery only, I wonder if they'll do the V50 at the $599 price again.

  • +1

Guys, how is this compared to Mi 9T?

    • LG is better for sure, unless it compares to MI 9T Pro (Redmi K20 Pro)

  • Good camera, this is the review for the G8: https://www.dxomark.com/lg-g8-thinq-camera-review/

  • -1

Specs identical to my s9+ even though it is one year older - pass thanks

    • +1

Your S9+ is at best SD845 equivalent and doesn't have the ultra wide lens.
It is known that S9+ did not implement the full BT5 feature set. I doubt Dolby Vision support is in S9+.

  • Anyone know what the fastest wireless charging wattage this thing'll do? 5 / 7.5/ 10 / 15? It's really hard to find out about information on the G8S when there is so much about the G8!

    • +1

Online listings for the phone seem to suggest it is a 9W.

  • I had a Good Guys voucher and got them to pricematch it instore for me. They don't have it in their system- maybe cos this is a "telstra" variant? But the nice salesperson matched anyway.

    • Wow that's a pretty good bargain if they matched it for you. Nice!

    • Is it dual sim?

      • Yes
