This is a returning deal - and for $500 you can do a lot worse.
    However;
It's a single sim - when the ones you can get at Good Guys and others are dual
The camera is pretty average compared to the Sony ones I've had and the "three camera" gimic is pretty mediocre. I can't confirm if those previous cameras I had with Sony Xperias were 13mp interpolated but my gut is they weren't and this is just a worse camera. 8MP is quite pathetic on a flagship. And it's abilities in low light are pretty poor.

Also note that this isn't the european variant and LG won't allow you to root it. The community still seems to be working on rooting non-European Thinq 8S's.

    • Not really an upgrade from a Pixel 3 then?

      • +2

        it's a downgrade!
LG has a very poor history of security and OS updates. You should wait for Pixel 5.

        • +4

After the Pixel 4 I don't have much hope for the 5.

        • +1

wouldn't say that for the v30

          • +2

@[Deactivated]: That seems like a strange comment. My LG V30+ hasn't seen an update since September 2019. It is running Android 9. There are known security holes in Android 9 (e.g. CVE-2020-0022 - bluetoooth hijacking). JB is still selling them for $449. I'd say that any V30+ being sold now has a major defect and is not fit for purpose. Given that I bought mine at the end of July 2019 I think I'm close to being able to make that argument. :-(

            • @bcg: wait you mean the android os or the security update those are two different issues. but given lg v30 is an enterprise device, it should get at least 3years security update

              • +1

@[Deactivated]: Sorry, didn't get an email notification about your reply…

Also sorry, I made my claim ambiguous by mentioning Android 9. I meant security updates to Android. I didn't mean an upgrade to the next level of Android - I certainly don't care about that, unless it is the only way of getting a security update.

According to GSM Arena the V30+ was released in August 2017. The last OS update was September 2019, so that's basically 2 years of security updates from release. This is very poor, especially for a phone that is still being sold… anyone who buys it now will get no security updates (unless, of course, the phones in stock have old firmware, in which case they'll get upgraded to September 2019 firmware).

Nice phone, awful security support. :-(

                • @bcg: the thing is though i find sd phones hard to find in australia, samsung uses their crappy exynos which doesn't justify for their enormous price tag with sub par performance. I find lg the only option other than pixel(poor battery) and chinese phones to get sd nowadays

                • @bcg: Note that the LG v30 is Android Enterprise recommended.
I don't know if they can get out of it, but on the website it states android enterprise recommended devices will get
"90-day security updates, available for five years from the launch date of the device"

Which would mean LG are obliged to provide 90 day security updates until 2022
(that said, My v30 has sep 2019 security ….)

                  • +1

@[Deactivated]: I notice at https://androidenterprisepartners.withgoogle.com/devices/#!?… that there are 3 different variants of the LG G7 listed (fit, One, ThinQ). For the V30 there is no V30+ or V30 ThinQ variant listed. I guess that's how they get away with providing useless support for the V30+: the variant seems to matter… assuming yours is the V30+.

Thanks for pointing out that site! I now know where to check before I buy my next phone…

                    • @bcg: That's an interesting point, thanks.

        • +2

Says who? I have had a G6 and G7 and updates, while not Pixel level delivery, were no par with the Samsungs I've had.

          • @bobloblawlobslawbomb: you reckon samsung give better updates. I am planning on buying a new phone

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: I use LG v10 myself and my wife uses an s7 edge. Samsung has always been more loyal to its customers when it comes to updates.

        • +1

That's a plus for me I hate security and updates

    • +4

So what is 8MP then? This is Triple rear camera-12MP + 12MP Wide + 13MP Telephoto. My G7 has 2 cameras and I find switching between them has been a joy at keeping real resolution high for my pics.

      • Yeah 3 cameras is far from a gimmick I would never buy a phone without a wide angle atleast… I can agree telephoto is wasted it should just be a better higher resolution main sensor (see LG V60)

The 8MP is the selfie camera obviously a misunderstanding or just usual LG bashing

        • I'm actually extremely picky regarding my brands, so I deliberately sought an LG due to a lack of value options in Australia. I had wanted another Xperia but Sony have pulled out. But I'm disappointed with the camera.

          • @Koffee: which sony did you have. I have one and find the auto focus super fast and sharp. But given my phone is pretty old camera is not too good but the result they output us amazing for the price.

Cons- it overheats and battery is small af

            • @[Deactivated]: The one I had was an XZ1 that I had gotten for a steal from eBay. I'm not sure what it is about the optics in a Sony phone but I think the technology that Sony has makes better cameras? It's not that the LG Is blurry or anything…it's just not the best?

Also, it's a bit unfortunate that one of the things I buy a phone to do is take the odd photo (when I don't have my camera on me) and that for LG they've relegated the function to not even having a dedicated button. I used Tasker to remedy that and have repurposed the Google Assistant button. However, the phone seems to keep changing the 'deviceid' on boot so I have 3 tasker tasks to catch whatever deviceid it's decided to assign it.

          • @Koffee: Sorry about suggestion mindless LG bashing then it's just super common.

Yeah the G8S is a sort of let down it seems even compared to the standard G8 but still seems a good pick at $499. I have the G6 and while cameras can be hit or miss I have no complaints in manual mode or using Gcam.

Though speaking of sony the new Xperia does look super nice and wish was an option here

            • @[Deactivated]: does you g6 camera app not work sometimes and require restart, cause my sony does and its really annoying

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: I've seen the leaks regarding the Sony Xperia with the dual sliding screens and if they'd come to Australia i'd be very tempted. Sony make really attractive phones to me. But how can I justify $1800+ without a local warranty?

What I like about LGs is they do in fact allow some root out of the box, it's just a shame that I can't root Australian models. Maybe we need laws like the EU have? I don't know. Also, it's good they don't fill the phone with bloatware - they let you make the phone what you like with the apps you like. I'll definately stick with LG for the forseeable future.

              • +7

@Koffee: We'd all love to root Australian models.

      • +1

Yes, My bad - backs are 12MP

    • GCAM Port available?

    • +2

looks like I'll have to find something else for $499 to root.

    • +1

Sony phone's cameras are not that great either. I thought they were but what Sony puts in hardware, they don't in software. The Xperia camera app and algorithms are terrible and lack a ton of maneuverability.

      • +2

        i can vouch for that

  • Can anyone comment on battery life?

    • I find it can run all day without a problem, I use it averagely and don't usually sit on it. If you want something that might go two days wtihout a charge perhaps this isn't for you?

    • -2

It's the 4th line on the page -

      3550 mAH Battery

      • +5

but he wants to know how long battery will last, eg screen on time

        • The problem is that not everyone SOT is equal. One could used their phone just for calls and say their phone last the whole day.

          • @Chicken feed: also background apps drain too - so much depends on personal usage.

          • @Chicken feed: Screens not on during a call.

            • -1

@9839002: Depends on the call. Sometimes you have to use the dial menu to press a number to get somewhere specific.

    • I bought one during the last deal and find it excellent (I often get >1.5days with usual use)

  • thank you, just lost my note 10 last week, almost pull the trigger on the mi mix 3 5g, but this is probably more reliable in term of updates

    • +15

Ha. LG phones are great, but LG sucks at updates.

      • Well rip lol

        • If it isn't the Australian model you can root it and install a different ROM, but on the Australian one you're screwed. Got the LG G6 H870K and I can't root it so I'm stuck with Android Pie which crashes System UI every 2 hours.

      • I went from LG G4 to a nokia with android one for 'regular updates' and I hated it. Went to back to LG for my next phone - a month later. Fewer updates, but it runs the apps I need unlike the nokia.

        • what apps don't run and why if I may ask?

      • +3

I don't care about updates, they usually slow the phone down, so you will upgrade the phone

        • Exactly. Everyone else thinks that "updates = new features and security fixes" while I, as a developer, thinks that "updates = removed / broken functionality and new security exploits".

Updates are software. Software can be buggy. Developers can make mistakes.

    • +4

      LG! Updates? lol

    • If you need a cheap, reliable phone in this price bracket, get Google Pixel 3 XL 128Gb from Allphones on ebay. $695 with shipping. Bargain for such a great phone (at this price point).
And….before I get flamed for the above comment….Google Pixel 2 XL feels as fast as current Samsung S20 phones! Yes, that's how bloated OneUi is.

      • +3

that one is SD845 and more expensive, I still think this one is probably the best for values

        • Also this one has expandable memory for those who want it. What has kept me away from Pixels is their instance on no expandable memory.

      • +5

An extra $200 isn't "in this price bracket", that's another 40% extra.

      • +2

ahhhhhhhh 695 for a 2 year old phone, no thanks

    • +1

Absolutely not. As others have mentioned, LG sucks at updates. Most likely you will be stuck at the version you got out of box.

  • +5

Also doesn't have the quad dac of the previous G series and the V series has, so a net downgrade from the v30 for me.

    • yeah whoever jumped on that v50 5g deal they got an awesome bargain imo. For 599, you can't get anything better than the v50

  • +3

Been thinking about the huawei mate 20 pro for $599.

The huawei still looks like the better deal.

    • +2

this one is only 1 year old and has a better chipset

    • im in the same boat. cant decide. I spoke in the harvey norman chat, and they offered the huawei for $579. Im stil deciding to pull the trigger. im on a s8+ and with optus so i dont mind the optus app already installed.

      • +3

S8+ is stil a great phone! Why upgrade?
If battery doesn't last long, just have it replaced and your phone will be like new.

      • How did you get HN to give you a discount?

      • Hey in the other post you said they offered you $550. What was it 550 or 579?

    • +1

my wife has the Mate 20 pro and it's a fantastic phone, excellent camera, 2-day battery easily, fast, beautiful screen and runs the latest Android 10. Can't fault it. I went from Samsung S8+ to a S20+ in the same time she has had the M20Pro over the last year and..yeah..not sure my S20+ is that much better. I'd go for the M20Pro at that price for sure.

      • +1

Love my mate 20 pro, don't miss Samsung at all.

      • Was really considering the M20 too. But looks like Google will stop supporting Huawei in the coming months. Would be a major pain trying to deal with that headache of how to source apps. Too hard basket for me. Real shame though…

    • +1

I would probably say Huawei. This is kind of a nerfed LG. The V50 did appear for $599 which is probably closer to the Huawei but no garunteeing that happens again

      • Yeah couldn't find any v50s on the market either… But this is a really good price for an SD855 though! Its priced at the budget market but with flagship specs… And there are phones are still releasing this year with this spec…

  • +1

My older models still run great. My wife uses my G4 and I love my G7 thinq. Both have been consistent work horses. Reliable. Cameras have been wonderful to use.

  • +3

v50 just got Android 10 update. Not sure if this one too got it or not. It was a huge wait and lot of community push to get LG rollout the update.

    • The v50 andriod 10 update turned my UI into samsungs! Lol.

    • +2

yeah I gambled V50 would get Android 10. and successfully got it. It is the cheapest flagship with dual screen + android 10 + DAC

      Better than this ThinQ

    • I thought I read G8S was hitting android within the July-Sept 2020 window.

    • My V50's main rear camera broke after Android 10 update. :(

  • Optus currently has p30 at just over $500 or p30 pro at just under $1000. Both great spec phones and both still ti come with google apps and updates!

    • How can you get the P30 for $500 at Optus? In-store or online?

    • Doesn't that require 24/36 months to stay on Optus due to handset discount? I mean if you cancel in first month then you won't get the handset discount - am I right?

      • +1

Correct to being on optus for 24 months, but payments are $22 a month, bringing cost to $528, which is very good price and saves having to fork out over one lump some of cash. Still staying on same $49 plan im currently on and sharing hugh data with wifes old $35 plan. Was considering a 5g device but it still to early for coverage and can easily upgrade earlier

        • Yeah that's what I thought, once you cancel you won't have any discounts applied on the handset. Unlike with Vodafone, a lot of people managed to get Google P4 & P4XL for just 700+ after canceling the first month

  • It's a shame we didn't get the real G8 here, but only this watered-down G8S rubbish.

    • What's it missing?

    • if you crack the screen though it would be cheaper to replace. The G8 has a beautful screen but the G8S is cheaper for a reason.

      • +1

they must think australians are poor lol

        • +1

I suspect it was more to do with their abilities to make deals with the US phone carriers - they were confident they could move a lot of G8's through them but not confident they could make their money back in Australia/Europe.

        • More like they believe Aus doesn;t have a big market, hence just give us a crappier version as there's no need to give out anything decent for poor aussies.

  • +4

    I want V50!!!!

    • same here mate, wish i had jumped on that phone

But yeah they don't exist anymore tried searching for them but it seems like they have been discontinued

  • -4

average deal.. $999 original price was a joke that no one would pay. $499 is ok, not a real bargain.

    • Seems real enough. Check out the votes.

    • +12

$499 is great. Depends how much you value LG brand, for me it sits higher than Xiamoi, Oppo but below Samsung.

  • No 5G?, I might guess the last V50 or OPPO deal is better.

  • Does it have IR blaster?

  • How would this Compare to the recent Oppo Deal, In terms of Performance & Camera.

  • +3

My TCL Plex is still going strong

    • So is my rotary dial home phone.
