Have People Started Prepping for The Next Pandemic/World War?

Interested to hear if people are making plans for the next pandemic or world war. Seems like both are quite likely given the state of the world. E.g. Looking to sell up urban rentals to buy something remote away from capital cities, starting a vegie garden or just keeping a month or more worth of groceries at all times.

We're actually running down our frozen food from the first wave in March. We have to, because meat only keeps frozen for so long, usually ~ 3 months, and that time is up. So we're actually destocking / de-prepping.

On the other hand, I have bought a small amount of extra toilet paper, because last time I point-blank refused to participate in the madness, and after a few weeks we got really low (having to literally resort to buying single rolls at the convenience store near our home, because that was all that we could buy). I have no desire to go through that again, so I bought one pack extra whilst the shops still have lots of stock.

From the last panic buying spree I noticed people are completely irrational in their preparation.

    • Buying out bottled water

If a person believes the water supply will be contaminated it makes no sense to buy water. Just how much can you stockpile? A few days worth? A much better alternative is to secure the filtering capacity to make clean water.

    • Toilet paper

This one will be studied by psychologists for years. Why TP? Who knows? The stuff literally grows on trees, we make our own, and we're not suddenly running out of forests to chop down.

    • Frozen food

If the fecal matter really hits the spinning blades, do you think a stable and reliable power supply is assured to keep that meat frozen? Much better to buy dry food that can be rehydrated. Has a shelf life of many years and doesn't need to be cooled.

    Next Pandemic - Yes
    Next World War - No
If it is a next world war, it will be the end of the human being.

well the Chinese and Indians were fighting with sticks and fists, so here you go

Fighting with sticks and stones? What is this World War 4

      • There are some stupid people, some ignorant people and there are some like this @weee
They won't know anything about what's going on world but will post it to get some +

AFAIK, there is an agreement between both nuclear nations about not to use lethal weapons at border.

You don't need to have a nuclear bunker etc but it was common sense before this, and should be clearer after this, to have enough food supplies at home to keep you going for a couple of weeks in the event of not being able to get to shops etc, and similar with basic supplies.

People probably realising that they should be able to be a bit more self-sufficient too.

    Nah no prepping for me.

If it all goes down I'd rather die early than drag it out into weeks and months of fighting, starving, looting and begging. I've played enough of this war of mine to know my plan is the right one for me.

      • Username checks out.

      • Yes, history and fiction tell us as much. But really, I'm not entirely convinced. I'm pretty sure my oldfeller wouldn't work if the other person wasn't into it. Hell, it's a struggle sometimes when they are into it…

        Tldr overshare.

Not sure there is much you can prep for another world war. If that happens I think we are all up the proverbial. The US/China/Russia are all malevolent enough that if they are losing they will ensure everyone else goes down with them and they all have the means to do it.

  • The next war is going to be economic - good luck prepping for that

    • That's been happening for awhile now with international trades. Etc

Next war is gonna be hostile take over and dominance.

      • no doubt - but I reckon it will more likely be take-over and dominance facilitated by economic influence, not guns

The quicker humans are eradicated from the planet the better. We had our shot and we blew it. Now it is just a cess pool of corruption and violence. Not to mention social media has ruined human connection.

Started a veggie patch, it's surprisingly easy and all the info you need are on youtube.

I think the easiest way would be to buy 2-3 shipping containers, dig a massive hole, and place them in, join them and woolah bunker.

    • +3

That doesn't actually work. Shipping containers aren't made to take a load from the sides and you have to worry about water getting in and combat that with various methods.

Source: I've watched too much shit on youtube.

  • I am not making any major changes, but I am more mindful financially.

However if I were rich I would build a bomb shelter man cave.

  • Have essential skills and know how to grow food. That's mine. I admit to going a bit nuts on the Diggers Club website and bought a lot of seedlings, and have been planting weekly ever since.

Essential skills relate to the basic needs of humans - warmth, food, health, and safety.

  • I'd be enlisting instead of prepping.

    building a gaming pc…

  • Australia will be armed with long-range missiles for the 1st time as part of a $270 billion build-up of the Defence Force over the next decade as the Morrison government looks to keep up with the regional arms race being fueled by China's militarization. So yes,we need more guns.

These are the kinds of things that are just so far beyond my ability to control that I try not to give them too much thought. Especially since I have an anxiety disorder, so once I start thinking about that stuff, my brain takes me to some pretty bad places and I derive no benefit at all from going there. So other than minimising debt to guard against unemployment (something I've always done anyway), I just try to focus on what's going on in my own life directly in front of me.

  • Tbh, if there is a serious pandemic that is wiping people out in crazy amounts. No amount of prep in suburban city centers will save you. We will become a might is right society and descend into utter chaos. You saw how people were with toilet paper.

Me? I'll be traveling to my parents acreage 70kms out of Sydney. Then reassessing.
