Work Monitor Recommendation (Budget $500)

Looking for a work monitor recommendation. Key points to note are:

  • Budget: $500 max
  • Mainly will be using Excel, so don't need any high refresh rates etc.
  • Size: 27 inch or more
  • Vesa mount compatible
  • Will be plugged to my laptop and used as an additional screen
  • Not sure if this is a bit of a stretch due to the budget, but would prefer a USB-C monitor that could also charge my laptop

    27" $500 USB-C

you need to hunt on Dell Outlet

    • So far my limited research has the Dell P2719HC on the list. Cheapest I have found so far is $399.

There's also the Dell U2721DE, which I could stretch for if I really wanted to. But is the $200+ extra worth it for the purpose I would be using it for?

      • The Dell P2719HC has only 1920x1080 resolution which isn't enough to take good advantage of 27", especially for spreadsheets. You should aim for 2560x1440 resolution in whatever monitor you buy.

IMO it's definitely worth paying the extra money for something you look at for hours every day. The Dell U2721DE has 2560x1440 resolution and seems like a good deal.

Dell's Ultrasharp designated monitors have good colour accuracy. That's not something that's really required for spreadsheets, but if you ever look at photographs or videos while web browsing it's nice to have. Looking at the same image side by side against a lesser monitor or notebook screen the difference in quality is obvious.

Mind you, I'm quite biased towards Dell monitors. I'm typing this on a 10 year old 30" Dell Ultrasharp that is still as good as when I bought it. My previous Dell monitor is even older and still working well for another family member.

      • which one did you buy ?

  • Not sure if this is a bit of a stretch due to the budget, but would prefer a USB-C monitor that could also charge my laptop

Doesn't this work the other way? I thought if using USB-C the laptop would feed power to the monitor.

    • that's would be those 15" portable monitor

      • Huh, I see. That's neat that a monitor can power a laptop then.

It’s a little smaller than you wanted but this is a good choice:

Can probably find it cheaper than this.

I have been eyeing that off, just waiting for it to drop below $500. A 27 inch with FHD seems too grainy up close, this is a bit smaller but QHD, and an ultraclear screen and USB-C charging dock.

  • I've been using a 50 inch tv for a couple of months now. The TCL I have looks terrible, but the Hisense in the lounge room looks heaps better. They still don't look "good" but you can't argue with the real estate you get with a huge 4k monitor. You can tile four windows and each window will be 1920x1080
