Kogan 7" Android Tablet. Gingerbread; micro SD slot, Cortex A8 Can be rooted and use CM7. $159 + delivery

101

Yes, yes, the Kindle Fire is US$199 with a dual-core processor etc etc. But you can't get it yet. It's US only upon launch.

I own the B&N Nook Color (rooted with CM7) and it's fantastic.

But this one seems to have similar specs as the Nook Color…except it's cheaper!

$159 + delivery.

Kogan pre-sold this at $139 some time ago with lower specs and Android 2.2. It was previously listed on OzBargain at $199 + delivery.

At this price, it's a great deal.

Before the wave of flame comes, I think people would appreciate the price in the title. Just a heads up :)

also Kogan tends to drop prices heavily after 6mth, so I'd hold off or get burnt again.

They claim they will start sending these two models - the 8" & 10" - from November 4, but I suspect they will be late and buggy.

Old Chinese saying: "To divine the future, first look into the past".

Edit: Oops, just realized the OP's post is about the old 7" model.

The 2 new models are the 8" @ $150.50 today 14/11/2011 (Pricing is dynamic & changes daily)

and the 10" @ $192 today 14/11/2011 (Pricing is dynamic & changes daily)

Too lazy to post them as possible bargains. Anyone else care to?

The 8" model is about 2x the weight of the 7". Same battery capacity but bigger, higher res screen (slightly). It's already at 3hrs for the 7", which is at the bottom end of usefulness.

      I be unexcited.

Just noticed the pricing changes more frequently than daily, possibly hourly or less.

    PRICE IN TITLE !!!!!!

Pretty standard specs but capacitive screen, 2MP front facing cam and already having Android 2.3 make it a good buy for the price in my opinion. The location of the camera and the 3hrs battery life is a bit of a let down though. Worth buying given what else is available if that's not a problem for you.

Edit: It looks like the 8" might be a better buy at $8.44 cheaper if you want a bigger screen. Better location of camera and if it's the same battery, -30mins I think.

what's the current best buy for Android tablet as a toy?

      • +1

That's a very hard question to answer not knowing your preference in specs or what you want it to do/do with it.

        Keeping it cheap:
The 7" Optus V9 is a nice device if you can handle the resistive screen and no front camera. It has an awesome battery life but the screen annoyed me to the point where I sold it because of that. Other than that, it has pretty standard specs. Worth looking at at least.

This Koagan 7"/8" looks good, capacitive screen and 2MP front facing cam are always nice. As I said, the cam location and battery life are somewhat of a let down though. Nothing major, it just comes down to personal preference. After the novelty wears off, the front cam is mostly only used for video calls/chat (plus the occasional MySpace style self shots) so IME you're going to want the cam a little more centred (like the 8" one). It just makes things easier. I've no personal experience with this particular device but the reviews look good.

Either way, I'd say you're looking at about $100 to $150 (maybe $200) for anything worthwhile/usable.

The Kogan 8" would be my recommendation given it's specs against the 7" and others on the market.
(Unless anyone else can contribute to this?)

I want it as a toy. I don't own any Android stuff so I'd like to try one b4 getting an Android phone.

Wife may want it to watch videos (via wifi maybe?) in bed vs using a notebook. Light browsing etc. Maybe skype to show off the baby.

May use it to show baby photos to the rels when we're out for dinner etc.

          So mainly something cheap.

          @furyou

I'd stay away from the Optus V9 then. Skype is not an option, getting videos to run smoothly is a little work but not too hard and browsing interaction (the screen) will probably get on your nerves eventually if you use it frequently enough. The battery life is amazing though.

I'd say get the Kogan as I'm a little weary of no name eBay tablets given past exp and I think the Kogan (regarding price VS spec's) is better value then other similarly spec'd device currently on the market keeping in mind the screen and camera among it's other spec's.
Given it's dimensions, the 7" and 8" movie sizes won't be much different. Skype will be pretty much the same on both. Browsing will be nicer on the 8" but the 7" will be lighter and easier to take to dinner to show the family photos because of it's size.
You'll only get 3hrs out of it showing photos and it doesn't charge via USB so you need a power point. Not an issue for all the home tablet activities though.

Choosing a tablet is a very personal choice but I really hope this helps.

      • what's the current best buy for Android tablet as a toy?

If you want to play with Android, consider the Acer Liquid MT phone at $128. You don't need to use it for voice.

The lower-spec'ed $99 Optus ZTE tablet got +ed like crazy.

This one is better value (hardware and software).

But the poor battery life and 800 x480 screen is a knock against it.

The 10" model has decent specs but at that price $195, you're better off waiting a little longer.

    • The lower-spec'ed $99 Optus ZTE tablet got +ed like crazy.

It had 3G and good battery life. Also now has official CM7 released. And a few months is a long time in this game.

      • and it had gps aswell. i got the navigon app (hacked) and mounted on my car to use as gps and music player

There was an offer for free zyrtec a while ago on ozbargain. May be useful in case you inadvertently get exposed to a Kogan product!!

      • +3

Only Zyrtec? I had one of the early Kogan TVs, and a cyanide pill might have been more appropriate.

Here is the review of their 10 inch tablet:

    http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2011/10/exclusive-kogan%E2%80%99s-…

TLDR; their 10 inch offering sucks, although that's to be expected at a sub $230 price point.

  • +1

I also own the Nook Color and this looks like way better value.

    • The Nook Color has a much better screen than this - IPS 1024 x 600, compared to Kogan's TN 800 x 480. That alone is worth the price difference, but the NC also has better battery life.

But if price is the priority, or you want the camera or HDMI out, it might be worth looking at this.

  • +1

Just $9 more than my 10", 32gb HP TouchPad.

But back to the subject, these haven't received great reviews.

  • I just noticed, no GPS in any of these tables. That's a shame :(

  • cpu: tcc8803 which has big power consumption and low performance
    screen viewing angle is terrible
stand by overnight will drain the bettery
    system crashes often……………..
I don't know what is like with CM7
For me it is just a piece of junk.
Maybe Playbook will be this price soon…………..

  • Price showing $199 plus delivery?

    10" is cheaper at $194!

So pre production sale is obviously over…
