After the recent shortages in the supermarkets, I've decided to grow my own.

    Any tips?

    • +8

      Need lots of water

      • +3

That's not a problem, we have the Desalination plant ready to go…

    • +1

      Start by planting one…

      • Which end up?

        • +2

          The pointy end

    • +1

Start building a gate first. And then you'll need an irri-gate-ion. But I'm sure your make shift rooftop irrigation will irritate your landlord to no end. Might as well just buy a pack of India Gate.

  • Same in Werribee Plaza Woolworths

  • Brand any good?

    • +11

India Gate is generally considered better than most Indian Basmati rice brands. However the best aged long grain rice is the India Gate Classic variety. Cooks well, excellent aroma and longest grain I’ve seen of the various brands I’ve tried.

Woolworths doesn’t stock that one only the India Gate Exotic.

      • Cheers. Can I get the good stuff at an Asian shop?

        • Most Indian shops stock the India Gate Classic. Its about $25-$35 for the 5kg bag. It is the most expensive one and at that price for a good reason.

          • +3

@Going Broke: Cheers, just noticed it on Amazon for $29

          • +1

@Going Broke: I paid $49 for 10kg of India Gate Classic. Most expensive rice I ever paid but it is worth it because of the taste.

        • +5

Not at an Asian shop, Indian shop. Asian shops don't generally sell Indian Basmati rice brands such as India Gate, Daawat, etc which have a variety of options within those brands (a few Woolworths and Coles stores stock only some as a comment above suggests).

      • So, I enjoy the taste of India Gate Classic, however I would like a shorter grain which is still basmati, any suggestions?

        • +2

Try Daawat Biryani rice, slightly smaller grain but cooks just as well.

      • My personal favorite is Daawat Biryani basmati. I bought the India Gate Exotic 5kg for $14 from Coles recently. Its not up-to my liking compared to the Daawat Biryani variety. I think its on discount for a reason

        • India gate exotic is every day rice. If you want quality and aroma then personally I only stick to

          Best - India Gate Classic
          2nd - India Gate Premium

All other brands like Daawat, Lal Quila and so on does not stand close to these.

    • +2

      Better than Maharajah's Choice
… Longer grain, fluffier and less sticker. Also less prone to breakages.

      • +1

Seconded. Will only take Maharajahs if there's no choice. $12 is on par with good Indian/Afghan supermarkets.

      • What about Riviana Basmati Rice from Woolies, that's what I normally get.

        • +2

Riviana is repacking lower grade Indian or Pakistani rice. Same with Maharaja Choice. For everyday use when you consume a lot I would go with India Gate Exotic, for proper aroma and quality: India Gate Classic or Premium.

          • +1

@Costco97: I do find Riviana similar to Maharajah's Choice too in terms of texture and overall quality. Both are Pakistani grains, one imported by Riviana Foods in Chadstone, and the other by Ostindo in Hallam.

  • exotic rice?

    • typo

  • +1

We've found that Coles Basmati Rice is fairly good too, comes in 1kg and 5Kg bags. Price is usually $14 for 5kg all year

  • +2

I normally buy Pakistani Basmati rice:
    https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/16119/rivi…

But recently tried India Gate and its really not too bad. Quality is up there with the above.

    • +1

      its really not too bad.

      so only a bit bad?

    • +1

Recommend avoiding this brand (Riviana). I had two bags of this with small insects (some sort of mites?) in the unopened bag… Then found out it had happened to a couple of friends with that brand too.
Never had that problem with India Gate.

      • +1

glad I'm not the only one…

      • I didn't see any insects. Luck of the draw?

        • Could well be - but I'm suspecting fabric bags (Riviana) vs plastic/foil (India Gate) make the former more susceptible to insect issues.

    • +1

      Distasteful and narrow minded

      • -2

Why is pointing out the fact that rice is a staple of these two cultures "distasteful"? Please explain.

    • +1

Depends on how big the family is…

      • +1

        and how much they eat.

    • +5

Basmati rice is not a sticky rice. It actually separates really well and is really long and fragrant. Not ideal for Chinese cooking so I am pretty sure the Indians would finish it first while the Chinese try to figure out what to do with it.

    • if it was free the oz pollies because they just suck up everything they can get…

  • +2

Personally I wouldn't recommend this even for $12, India gate premium is much better and the classic is the best but expensive.

  • Where do I find basmati rice that's super long grain (like the ones from Indian Restaurants)? I've bought the Sunrice ones and seems pretty different to the ones that legitimate indian places have

    • +2

Get India Gate “Classic” it comes in a brown packaging so its distinctive and you cant mix up with the other India Gate varieties. That’s the most expensive and best basmati rice from the Indian brands, you wont go wrong with that choice.

      • Thanks - is it heaps different from this "exotic" version?

        • Yes. The classic is definitely different and way way wayyyy better… in fact it is the best brand that you will get down here…
but it is also cost 2-3 times more…

A supposed trick for the cheaper exotic rice is to soak it for lesser time (15-20 min) and add a teaspoon of oil in water when cooking to get the long grain fluffy look.
but it can't beat the fragrance and taste of Classic version.

    • +1

I haven't tried India Gate Classic as others recommended, but I have been a loyal customer of Daawat 'Biryani' Basmati rice. It never disappointed me. I tried the pakistani one and found it too sticky to my liking.

      • +1

Try India Gate Classic, you would love it. It is sells for premium for a reason. Make sure the bag you pick says Katoomba Trading as importer on the back because that is the only importer in Australia for India Gate. Some Indian shops try to get packs from India that are not export quality.

        • Good info..I will try it next time

  • +2

$12.99 is usual price at costco.

    • So Woolies is cheaper at the moment.

      • special v non special

        • Membership vs non membership

          • @Mregmi: Haves vs have nots

            • @RSmith: still special v non special

              • @petry: Yeah, but ozbargain is about obtaining the lowest price. Special or not.

                • @RSmith: you don't read what's being posted these days do you?

                  • @petry: What's being posted is that Woolies are selling it cheaper than Costco. Did I get it wrong?

                    • -1

@RSmith: What's been posted is that Woolies are selling it cheaper than Costco today, because normally Woolies sell it at nearly double the price - maybe thats because its getting near its shelf life or its weavilly..

                      • @petry:

thats because its getting near its shelf life or its weavilly.

                        Fact or guesswork?

                      • +1

@petry: For reference, a 2019 crop or harvest will need to be aged before being bagged and put to supermarket shelves. That same crop will have a shelf life of at least 2yrs, i.e. expiring in 2022.

                        • +1

@Jojo-Ma: I still have couple of India Gate Classic bags left that were packaged in 2015. It is even better than the new lots I got a year back.Seems like the more aged they are better they get. Back in India no one bothered how old the rice is, as long as it does not have insects. To prevent that we always threw in few Bay Leaves in the buckets.

          • @Mregmi: No gift card vs Gift Card

  • How does this compare to 'Pattu Premium Basmati rice' found in Indian shops. Is this one better than pattu variety? Thank you.

    • +1

Not sure about Pattu, but Indiagate exotic is fine for daily use. The expensive varieties are better when used to make Biriyani though.

  • +3

Woollies say 40% off. In Australia half price means 10% off from real price.

    • what woollies say is garbage at the best of times…

    • Pretty much, you can get for $12 to $13 from most Indian Grocery shops.

  • I have been using india gate premium for last 17 years everyday… never had issues..

    • What possible issues could be there?

Cook the rice and eat it. Can't be simpler than that.

      • I think he meant quality wise. There are a lot of verities of rice and each has its own use. For example cooking that needs sticky rice would need Jasmine and at same time cooking that needs long gain rice would need gains like basmati.

  • Are we adopting the American MSRP, now?

    • w've adopted everything else so its only a matter of time before we build an ocean wall…

  • This deal ends up being a curse more than a blessing.

With all the panic buying going around, deals for rice probably increase demand. I can't find any India Gate in my local stores even at full price.

    Please no more deals lol.
