Gaming Laptop Recommendations - under $2K

So I recently bought the Dell G5 15 SE laptop for the ~$1350 deal but it's been nothing but issues since it arrived. Crashing, freezing under low loads, overheating when gaming, not waking from sleep and more but you get the idea… Anyway, it resulted in a refund and returning the laptop because Dell were unable to fix any of the above issues and they're pretty common for this model.

So now I'm looking for a replacement with similar-ish specs from another brand. I'm hoping to pay as close to the amount that I paid for the Dell as possible but I understand for a RTX 2060 I'm looking at closer to $2000.

These are the specs I'm after:
CPU: Ryzen 5 4600H / Ryzen 7 4800H OR i7 9th gen +

GPU: GTX 1660ti (if it's a really good deal) OR RTX 2060

The rest is either upgradable or pretty standard for a laptop with the above so I'm not too fussed.

Any help is highly appreciated!
Thanks OzBargainers, please help me find another OzB level deal!

  • I suggest you go watch the recent videos from Dave Lee on Youtube, he's reviewed all the gaming laptops from Razer, Acer, Dell and other brands.

  • I'm sure you'll do your research before committing to any of the below, but I saw these the other day when I was in the store. These had trade-offs though in terms of other issues or weaker areas with them.

  • I have the same issue with you, Bought Dell G5 15 SE laptop for the ~$1350, nothing but issue, laptop overheating, the game goes black screen, then laptop reboot itself, sometimes blue screen while playing the game. The latest BIOS released 2 days ago, seem to help, but the issue still there. So I'm returning this laptop. I've done my research, nothing comes close to the price we bought it for the G5 15 SE, but we will have to pay more for something that is more stable. The G5 15 SE is a BEAST of a machine if it wasn't for the issue.

PS..Don't get the Asus TUF15 it's a horrible system for the price as said by someone above, the screen quality is awful. I'm still searching for a replacement laptop.

    • If you find a suitable replacement - please let me know! :)

      • I found one, but I think it could be above your budget.

New Dell G7 17, sone sale at the moment (normally $3,499), but it's $2,326.83 by using code DEAL30 and EPP5.

        10th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-10750H
        Windows 10 Home
        NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 2070 8GB GDDR6
        16GB DDR4-2933MHz, 2x8G
512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive
        17.3 inch FHD (1920 x 1080) 300 nits 144Hz 9ms 72% color gamut with Eyesafe® technology

  • If one is willing to wait, I believe all these issues will resolve eventually. Otherwise, Acer Helios 300, Legion 5 or Omen 15 look promising, but these are $1900-$2200 machines I think for comparative specs.

  • Buy a good desktop to game on, and a cheap laptop to use while you're out.

    • I've already got a good desktop but need a laptop for travel (I travel for work and would like to game on it in my off-time).

      • Fair enough, pretty much all the gaming laptops seem to have the same issues though unless you spend insane money. Too much going on in too small a space.

        • I don't mind thermal issues - usually can be sorted by getting a solid cooling pad - but the stability issues of the G5 15 SE made it unusable - even for light load tasks - so I'm hoping other brands won't share those specific issues too

  • It’s been a few years since I’ve looked into it, but what about getting a cheaper laptop with a good CPU yet no GPU and getting an EGPU? You already said you have a desktop, so when you travel you could remove the GPU from desktop, pack it with your EGPU and then set it up wherever you travel to? This might mean you won’t be able to play on the go per se, like on planes, but I would assume usually laptops get hot or run out of battery in those circumstances. Just a thought, again I haven’t looked into it for ages lol

    • Thanks for your reply, I thought about this earlier but the cheapest eGPU I could find is about $600 for just the enclosure. So if I spend $1000 on a decent laptop and then get the eGPU, it'll be similarly priced to a gaming laptop anyway.
