Is 4K overrated?

I can finally display 4K content on my TV, however I am really not that impressed to be honest. I sit a perfect distance from my TV and can see some extra details, but overall I'm a bit disappointed.

4K seems like it's mainly useful for those with gigantic TV's where you can actually see the smaller details easily.

Does anyone else feel that 4K is a bit overrated? 1080p is still solid in my opinion.

    What TV do you have?

Moreover, what size TV? If it's 60"+ then there's a huge difference in quality especially with HDR both in BluRay discs and PS4 Pro games. PS5 will build on that for sure.

Depends on the TV, content etc.

    1. What TV?
    2. Were you playing 4k content?

I get blown away by 4k HDR content on LG C9 no matter how many times I watch it.

Are you referring to pornhub or redtube?

  • Are you watching 4K videos on your 4K tv?

You're going to get better quality on 4k blu rays than 4k digitally streamed content.

I'm going to go ahead and say… nope, no one else feels this way.

Standing in the stores looking at it on their Demo TV's, I wont be rushing out to buy one even if my current TV dies. Maybe my eyes are shot, but I've never worried about keeping up with the Jones' either.

    Your FFalcon 40 isn't FFalcon 4K. ;)

(I realize you probably went out and bought a new 4K TV, comment in jest)

Good 1080p content (high bit rate), can look really good, and depending on your viewing distance it’s very hard to see the difference sometimes…. but if you go from watching a lot of 4K content back to 1080p content on the same TV, you will immediately notice the difference. There’s a couple of caveats to that. I’ve got a 43inch 4K TV and it’s hard to see the difference unless you’re close up. I’ve also got a couple of old plasma TVs at my beach house, (A 50inch Pioneer and a 65 Inch Panasonic), and when you play 4K content on them, (especially the Panasonic), they look great, even though it’s only got a 1080p screen. I’d say almost as good as my Samsung 4K a lot of the time. The Pioneer has amazing blacks and colours, the best of all my TVs, but the resolution just isn’t there (mind you it’s really old and cost $8k new inc the set top box).

watching 170mb webrip episodes on a 4k TV/monitor will give you that impression.

4K content from youtube looks spectacular, and really shows off the capabilities of the format.

In my opinion, if you only watch 4k content for everything (games and movies) then yes its excellent. But if you switch between watching/gaming in 1080p and 4k because of bandwidth or preference, then its overrated.

4k Netflix is rubbish. 4k anything compressed to crap is rubbish. Proper 4k is pretty good, but not earth shattering.

  • Yeah, a good 1080p Blu-ray upscaled well can look better than a crappy 4k blu-ray, in my opinion.
It's all about the source media.

  • Streamed a few 8K Youtube vids on the new tvs at work and that looked damn crisp!

  • I also would suggest you try the "theatre setups" in shops or at friends houses, see if that floats your boat?
Maybe then you might think differently?
Hi Def., sporting events on big, good 4K TV do look better than a 1080 telecast, all day and any day.
But by all accounts if you want to remain old school, be old school.
It is also like the old LED vs OLED arguments.
Orginally LED was not so good vs OLED, now "QLED" has got better.
Now if you have the desire to flush a lot of money you can even get 8K, (but what material will be you be able to watch?).
But the source material they showed on OLED TV in COSTCO etc., were choosen to show off the OLED capabillites really well.

    HDR is where it's at

10bit colour is cool but I hate how many movies are using gratuitous HDR with excessive bloom. It's like when 3D was the bit thing and suddenly every movie had shot to highlight depth of field.

Yeah anything smaller than say 55 inches you can get away with 1080, 55 inches and above however, it makes a difference. Definitely noticeable on my tv.

  • It depends on the source as well. I don't have any 4K TV around but from my experience with 1080p, Satellite TV and Blueray surpasses the video quality than any internet source. I even used to watch National Geographic 3D channel (Satellite) when I was in overseas and it was mesmerizing.

  • Some 4K movies have been downsampled to 2K or 2.5K.

I can't personally see much difference and think it's a bit like the emperor's new clothes. Might be my eyesight or that 55" is too small. I'm sure if it were 77" or above, I'd be able to tell.

Is 4K overrated? Let's say I wouldn't want to be going backwards.

    • Most movies these days are 2k. Theres just so much old content that will never be 4K ….it was introduced because people weren't buying new tvs…. just another planned obsolescence tactic like Dolby atmos.

Almost all CGI is 2k, even on huge budget films like Marvel.

  • 4K resolution is not really the selling point of the Uhd format. WCG and HDR are the game changers here.
That said the resolution does add a nice jump on my 110” projector screen. But on my 55” oled it’s much harder to see the advantage the increased resolution brings but the HDR really makes the image ‘pop’ (for lack of a better word) and the blacks go deeeeeep.
In short, the uhd 4k format is incredible if you have the right setup for it. But if you expect it to blow you away on a 55” led tv you will generally be disappointed.
