  • Ahh ye overweight bovine. I haven't tried one yet I didn't like.

  • Tastes nice but weak in alcohol % if that bothers you. 0.9 standard drinks.

    • I got some on the kogan deal a few months ago and noticed this. Low alcohol wasn't fun.

    • Four Pines/Brookvale Union also make an excellent alcoholic ginger beer but again only 4% which is not enough for me. I ended up making my own instead by buying Bundaberg Ginger Beer and adding a shot of vodka :)

  • +2

Whats the sugar content like, can't stand excessively sugary ginger beer like Bundaberg, prefer a nice bite of real ginger with slight sweetness

    • +1

It's pretty sweet. Matso's has good kick to it

      • +1

Matso's would be the leader in decent ginger beer

        • +1

Personally, I prefer Lick Pier, but Matso's is clear second for me! :)

        • +2

          Tingletop, followed by Matso's

    • You'd probably enjoy this. There are some heinous alcoholic ginger beers on the market, but this is not one.

It's really only moderately sweet, not overly intense but has a nice aftertaste where the warmth of real ginger is present (although I still think this is made like a soft drink with ginger and alcohol added).

Worth at least trying a 6 pack for $12/13, considering most are $5+ a bottle as singles. Rusty is on tap at some venues also.

    • i recently went to Tumut River Brewing Co and tried the 'Ginja Ninja' and it was really nice and sounds like what your looking for.

Plenty of Ginger, not sweet and full strength.

  • Only 0.9 standard drinks 3.5%abv…but still good deal though.

    $13 for me?

    • Different stores have different pricing.

      • +1

Different States have different pricing - adds $1 container deposit (get 60c back)

  • Bought a case for $58 (dammit!) in the previous deal. Not really a fan, tbh.

It's drinkable, but I probably wouldn't pay more than $40ish for a slab. Personally, I think $12 a sixer is a fair price for it. YMMV.

  • does this have preservatives in it?

    • Yes.

Ingredients: water, cane sugar, alcohol, natural ginger flavours, preservative (211), food acid (330)

      • Thanks for your response

  • Why has this been marked as expired - still available!

    • Updated.

      • +1

        That was quick 👍

  • My local has a 3 six pack limit. Just put in multiple orders.

  • +1

Does anyone know how many grams of sugar?

    • +3

      7.4g/100ml
So 24.4g per can = almost 5 teaspoons of sugar
(36.25 grams of sugar in 330 ml of coke)
WHO recommends a maximum of 5 to 10 teaspoons of free sugars per day.

      • +2

Thanks!!! That's far too much sugar. I'm out!

        • +1

Matso's for example has higher sugar content than this, like many alcoholic ginger beers.

      • Wtf! No wonder its on sale, this price is still a rip off given the low alc volume as well. That is an obscene amount of sugar.

        • +6

If you can find a good tasting commercial low sugar content alcoholic ginger beer - tell us!
          I've given up the search.

I was given so many dozens of great home brew alcoholic & non-alcoholic GB by a man diagnosed with Diabetes. It's a health hazard having a taste for good GB!

This is still 1/3 less sugar than Coke, which is still very popular.

Ordinary ginger beer has a higher sugar content than Coke

I use Buderim Ginger Cordial (reduced sugar) as a mixer to help limit the sugar content of ginger drinks. Has a great ginger punch👍

@INFIDEL: I think i'll have to look into brewing my own. A lot of these ginger beers aren't even brewed, just flavour added to alcohol and charge a pretty penny for it.

            • +2

@nubzy: I grew up with great home made ginger beer - but not alcoholic. Guess that's why I love the stuff!

              Certainly worth doing yourself.
Friend gave me a kit, but it never got used. Travel & homebrew aren't a good match.

Visited the Buderim Ginger factory many times - the smell of ginger syrup is almost intoxicating!
Replanting my ginger in the garden soon.

              • @INFIDEL: I found that most ginger beers are just flavoured water which should be illegal. You're better off buying/making real ginger beer and adding vodka to get the required kick :)

                • @1st-Amendment: That's why I suggested the Buderim Ginger Cordial (reduced sugar) as a good strong ginger mixer with alcohol - 24% ginger syrup (contains sugar) + 9% ginger juice. Available @Woolies ($4 for 750ml).
It's my regular winter alcohol based drink - very warming!

A much stronger ginger taste than watery Bundaberg GB, which I don't like! It's made with ground ginger, vs fresh ginger. A very different flavour.
I grew up drinking home brewed GB made with ground ginger. Now can't go back to that - prefer the real ginger taste of the ginger juice / syrup.

Been to the factory near here many times - uses lots of fresh local ginger.
They make their own Buderim alcoholic ginger beer, but yet to try it ($19/20 for 4, 4.5%, 34g sugar / 330ml).

Can make your own ginger syrup, but time consuming & buying fresh ginger can be expensive, so grow my own.

@INFIDEL: i commented above about Tumut river brewerys 'Ginja Ninja', i recently tried it and it was delicious.
            Really gingery and no sweetness.

I cant find the Nutritional breakdown but they claim "It has almost no carbs as most of the sugar is fermented out of it"
Might be one to check out, but is a craft brewery so it wont be cheap.

  • Going by the picture, that Yak is not only rusty, but also drunk af :)

    • That's done on purpose. The can says to store it upside down and then reverse it when ready to drink.

      • Ginger sediment is mixed when you turn can right way up, just before drinking.

  • Goddamn it when's this deliciously cheap booze gonna end!

    • +1

Hopefully not until the end of COV-19

  • Rusty Yak is $13 for me

  • Fairly sure Corona Ligera… even though it has 'light' in its name… is mid-strength (by aus tax definition).

If true, that makes it more of a bargain.
