With All The Dash Cam Deals on Here OzBargain and Reading The Comments

WIth my short tenure here on OzB, recently ran into a couple deals on here, and today I was lucky that I grabbed one of the Blackvue DR590-1CH (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/551511). It was very exciting and fun to get deals here. But…

After searching thru the database here about dash cam, it seems like there are countless deals on dash cams and it seems that the Viofo A119V3 has been recommended over and over again, and the price had been much lower than this, or merely $20 over this Blackvue here.

Now, I wonder how does this compare with the all-time-talked-about Viofo A119V3? Spending $144 on this, in comparison, seems like a much better deal with the Viofo A119V3.

Any thoughts guys?

I haven't owned the Blackvue but looking at footage online I'm not particularly impressed, especially for the regular price of $300. For $150 I'm sure it's fine but yes as you said the A119 v3 is exceptional.

Oh and the Blackvue doesn't have a Save Recording button, which is pretty stupid IMO. If you want to save a copy of something you'd better whack the camera hard enough to make it think you've had a crash

  • The Blackvue looked interesting until I read you can't flag videos for overwrite protection. That's a dealbreaker.

I have an older A119. It's fantastic value. It's 2 cameras. One for the front and one for the rear. No issues so far. Quality is great.

      Where did you read this?
Its completely wrong, you can literally flag any video as an "event" which prevents it being overwritten
Have had to do it myself and can confirm it works and its never not been a feature

          Well that commenter is wrong
BlackVue have always had this function
you can even just wave your hand past a sensor on the cam to do it without having to do it on your connected device

          • @jimbobaus: Correct:
            Proximity Sensor:
Touch or wave a finger within 20mm of the sensor to turn
            on/off audio recording.
Alternatively, it can be set as a manual recording trigger in
            the firmware settings.

edit: This is for a DR900s. Unsure of other models.

Had some second tier brands, not the viofo specifically but similar.

Sure they are cheaper and some even have nice looking footage but (and two big butts)…
    1. It doesn't always work.
    2. The important details are lost.

The images when paused have lens flare or just pixelated enough so it's not conclusive. I don't actually care about colour saturation etc as I don't have any intention of using the footage except as evidence so the most important thing is that I have the footage and the footage has the best possible chance of having the required details.

  • I set up a search 3 years ago for the viofo because it was the best for the money even then.

What's insane is, at the time it has been around a while and now, 3 years on, it's still the best.

I know damn well you can do a nice 4k camera now easily, plus tech has improved in 5 years, yet here we are.

Other thing is the viofo doesn't seem to drop in price, ever.

They do make a 4K model, and a dual channel model, and they are up to their 3rd version of the A119 with improvements each time. And they do go on sale often, I think $98 (last sale) is pretty much the lower limit of what I'd expect for a high quality camera. It's much higher quality than anything in the $50-$75 range

      • Is the 4k any good? Haven't seen it posted here ever.

        • I wouldn't bother with 4K. You'll just fill up your memory card faster. I went for the A129 (dual camera) this time to replace my A119 V2 just because I wanted a rear camera as well. Otherwise the A119 V3 is the best one to get

  • Can either / both of them be hardwired in? Or are they a plug in the cigarette lighter kind of deal?

    • +1

They are cigarette lighter kind of deal but you can buy the hardwire kit

      • My VIOFO A129 Duo is hard wired in. Plenty of sellers on eBay have them with the wiring kit included in the price.

    • Blackvue often comes with the Power Kit as an added freebie when on sale

I wasnt really impressed with the night time footage of blackvue DR-590. Viofo A119S V3 is so much better in that regard.

    • i disagree, the night vision on the BV is amazing

  • Blackvue has a nice form factor which makes it fit neatly behind the rear view mirror.

  • I finally sold my blackvue and jumped on the Xview deal on Repco. Footage seems to be pretty good and really wonder how it compares with the A119V3 or A129 Duo side by side.
