Oppo Reno 5G - 256GB (Black or Green - Optus Variant)

I have emailed the store to asked if they can lower the price from $699 to $599 to match the previous Harvey Norman and JB hifi deals, and they agreed. The deal is on now.

Pro:
The phone is fast, camera and battery life is good.

Con:
The phone is a bit heavy, lack of water resistance and no wireless charging.

Australian Stock with 2 years warranty.

Enjoy.

Nice. I am using the 4g

    • If this is dual sim 4G version , that would be perfect

  • This or pocophone f2?

    • +2

How much do you value having a local manufacturer's warranty?

    • Also Check out this one, use code cart 3 and it will be $555, Shipping will take a week. Got one last week.

      https://www.tobydealsau.com/en_AU/product/samsung-galaxy-s10…

      • I was interested in getting one of these, What are your thoughts on it so far? Is it getting monthly updates in Australia? Would you recommend it over the oppo?

  • Is is better than oppo 10x? Which was for $500?

    • +1

if you dont use the 5g then its the basically the same phone. Unfortunetely the 4g version is sold out.

      • I believe you bought that phone for $500?

  • How's the screen compare to the LG Thinq v50?

  • +1

Can some one confirm if the Optus version is duel sim? Thanks

    • +1

      Single sim

    • +19

      As fighting each other?

      • +8

+1 … but people in glasshouses shouldn't throw stones
(i.e. it probably helps if you're going to be a spelling and/or grammar nazi to double-check that your own comment is 100% correct!? "As in fighting each other?" maybe?)

        • +1

Your grammar isn't exactly on point either. ;)

          • @subywagon: Good thing that I didn't try to imply it was. Despite that, it's really not that bad, so I think your point is lost unless you want to throw in a capital letter and full stop or two (such as outside the brackets), or superfluous commas for the sake of it. However, given it's a forum comment that starts with "+1", and effectively ends with a question mark, that's hardly necessary.

Guys are such phones still have good battery considering the launch date was long back. Battery tends to deplete over time.

    • +4

Not all phones were made before launch. This phone was launched on may 2019, and the stock could be made Nov 2019. Do not worry about that unless you are buying a 3+ years old phone.

    • +2

According to my accubattery my battery health is still 93% @ 3,800mAh. Phone was made in June 2019 I think, and I started using my phone last month in June 2020.

    • +3

I don't think you can correlate the launch date to much at all…. I think they still make them.

This is Optus variant - they didn't start delivering these until Q4 last year so it's actually quite new. See: https://www.finder.com.au/optus-adds-5g-phones

The launch date also wasn't all that much different to many other phones being sold as current today, for Optus variant it's actually much the same as current iPhone 11 (and it's twice the price and not 5G so less risk for $s) - Also there's no way to know how well or poorly any of them managed their acquisition of battery stock, how long it sat before being employed in the phone etc.

i.e. It's not really old stock so you should be fine. Plus they tend to put the ideal amount of charge on to prolong battery life with Li-ion batteries for transport / warehouse storage. Certainly 2 years+ before you'd have an issue, not 9-10 months.

      • That's why I said made date. The date the phone was manufactured is printed on the box.

        • +1

my comment is a reply to SpaceNinja. There's no way SpaceNinja could know what date the phone they will get was made based on the launch date nor your made date and no reason to assume it is old. I presume yours isn't an Optus variant @ June 2019 manufacture?

I'd get this if I was going to be upgrading my OP5 - Nice deal for Snapdragon 865 and 256Gb

    • it's Snapdragon 855, but still fast enough to run a Full HD+ display.

      • If I was to pay tonight via PayPal is there a chance I would receive it to western Sydney by Friday Victor

        • +1

I am not sure, I remember they sent it via express post. Maybe Friday or Monday, due to Covid 19 the delivery could be delay..

      • I stand corrected - still an upgrade compared to my SD835, and still better chipset than most alternatives at this price.
Maybe better than the latest SD 7 series

        • Sure better than sd7xx

    • Galaxy s10 lite, with 8gb/128gb and a bigger screen, bigger battery, better camera for $555 with code cart3

      https://www.tobydealsau.com/en_AU/product/samsung-galaxy-s10…

  • Great specs for the price.

  • +3

It comes with a screen protector pre applied (not tempered glass). If you like tempered glass, do not buy from eBay. As many people( include myself) tried many different sellers claim for 10x or 5g. 99% won't fit.(if you are lucky find the 1%, pls share ) Maybe try aliexpress.

    • So annoying, I'm waiting on a couple shipments from aliexpress. Gotta be close now

      • Take ages I know. My recent fastest record was 35 days. Others orders I have no idea. Also the tracking is useless.

    • I had to take off the pre applied screen protector because it affected the in-screen finger print sensor but the supplied case provide decent protection, so i dont really think you need screen protector

  • -5

Got one in a previous deal about 6 months back, moving from a Oneplus 6. Not overly impressed with any aspect of this phone.

    • Why would anyone downvote this comment? Floppo are known for being rubbish and gimmicky..

  • +6

I got this from the Harvey Norman deal, up to now, very very good. After installing the ColorOS 7, it feels even better. For the price, no complaint.

    • +2

I'd also like to vouch for this phone. Has been performing very well. The picture quality is great.

  • Con: still Android 9? I mean it's somewhat recent, but we're starting to get Android 11 betas rolling out for various phones. Is this phone getting any major version upgrades?

    • +9

No this phone can upgrade to android 10

      • Yep, just saw it on the Oppo site, only released in June. It was not on gsmarena yet hence my original comment.

    • +3

Color OS 7 is released (to both the Optus and Telstra variants of this phone) which is based on Android 10.

    • -3

I had a non branded Oppo Reno 10x Zoom I bought from JB Hi FI.
Managed to get the Android 10 update 2 months ago before selling it.

I believe carrier branded models will lag behind, Have a look at the Optus customer service forums. They usually provide updates on firmware releases

      • +3

Mine is Optus and I got the Color OS 7 (Android 10) update about a month or so ago.

      • +2

        Before selling it…

        Who was the lucky buyer?

        • hahaha, I didn't realise this was the xbox scammer

      • +1

Not the story for Reno 5g. Both O and t received update at the same day with same firmware. Therefore I do not think carriers had to do anything with it.

20x is getting an update to unlock record video on all cameras. Current is only support main camera.

My gf has had this phone for 6 months and absolutely hates it. Battery life is lucky to get from 8am - 4pm without needing a charge up. I have the p30 pro (10/10 from me), I'll charge mine for 20 minutes and get 50% charge, she'll charge here for 1.5 hours and barely get close to 50%.

Always had issues with the phone getting service too(never had issue with previous iPhone), doesn't load a thing on data at least one or twice a day but fixes itself after a restart.

I'd steer clear and get a more reputable phone like galaxy note or p30 pro personally.

    • +7

For the charging speed, you need to use the included charger for fast charge..

    • +3

I've had the opposite experience with mine, great battery life so far

    • +1

My wife had p30 pro. Yes it charges faster than this reno, but 1.5hr 50%? Mate you are joking, or your gf did not use the original charger and cable.

Plus I haven't experience any of the issues you mentioned above. Unless your gf got a lemon phone, you should get it checked.

    • I started off with similar battery life to my previous Mate 20 Pro (5-6+ hours SoT) but now after ~2 months, I'm getting in the 7's. Also better signal than the M20P and previous Galaxy S8+. Might want to check the battery stats to see what's draining it - the Google Assistant app (especially when setup to auto-detect "ok google") has been known to drain a looooot of battery.

      • Which is the better phone? Mate 20 pro or this one? Thinking of getting the mate 20 pro from HN selling at $599 too

        • See my comment here. Both great phones but the Reno has really grown on me.

          • @donnot: Thanks mate. Helpful post.

I've been leaning on the HW mate 20 pro since I kinda need to use my HN gift card soon before expiry. But i heard about the green tint from some people too, while other users dun have that issue. Is that a big deal for you?

Also I use my iphone apple pay to pay for most things nowadays. So nfc is a big deal for me. You mention issue with Samsung pay for your watch, is the Google pay on the phone okay?

            • +1

@Jared17: Never had an issue with Google Pay on the phone (NFC was flawless - probably made well over 500 payments without an issue). Absolutely couldn't get Samsung Pay working on my watch though (Android 9/10) - tried everything including a factory reset with no luck.

My screen had a green tint (as with most) but I didn't have the common green bleeding issue (not an LG screen) - there was just a bit of backlight bleed in a dark environment which was disappointing for an OLED - annoying when I was using it in bed.

On the plus side (not sure that I mentioned this) - the screen definitely gets brighter than the Oppo, the phone was more manageable and felt more premium in the hand.

          • @donnot: Yeah, I agree. I like using this in the car and for competitive online gaming like COD or PUBG. The 6.6" flat display with no notch or hole is really nice. Speakers are also pretty good. UI has improved with drastically with Color OS 7 to the point where it's actually decent.

    • Mine ended up with about 30% at the end of the day with moderate use. I noticed that FB eat up a lot off battery, about 40%, so if you turned off the background process and auto start for FB, i believe your gf's phone can last a lot longer

      • +1

Same here - the other day, Facebook was using ~45% according to settings so I ended up installing Facebook Lite. That seems to have fixed it.

    • I have no idea what she got installed there. It's either background apps draining, a virus or a really bad battery.
      I didn't charge mine since 8am YESTERDAY and i still have 42%.
This is the hands down best battery I have ever had in any phone, and I have only had flagship phones (like Samsung Galaxy etc).

    • Your girlfriend must have a defective unit because the phone has a great battery life and service. Like, really good. You should be getting a couple of days at the least.

I picked one up during one of the last deals and the phone has exceeded all of my expectations.

  • -1

got 10x model and very impressed, coming from LG V30+, battery is excellent, however I am using using the ColorOS to switch my phone off overnight.

    • Where's that setting? I couldn't find it.

  • +1

    Hello
Could someone clarify, does the Optus Variant mean its still unlocked for all Sim Carriers?

    Thanks

    • +1

Still unlocked for all the other networks as per my purchase of this phone from Harvey Norman few months ago. It will just have some Optus bloatware. While I want to say that it is definitely unlocked, I am not 100% sure as the website listing does't seem to mention anything about being unlocked for all the networks. Send them a message here https://www.5gworld.com.au/pages/contact-us just to be sure.

  • Will this phone only work with Optus or any other Network too??

    • +1

      Will work with other networks

  • Can I install Google camera APK….?
Anybody using Google camera app on this phone…?

    • yeah you can install gcam on this phone, i did but quality is not so different overall ended up installing it

  • great phone. does anyone know if you can convert it to a dual sim hybrid using a sd card tray adaptor or do you need to install a custom ROM first?

  • Would anyone choose Oppo Reno 5G over LG V50 ?

LG has a better quality display but on paper Reno 5G seems to have better specs (camera, storage, RAM, Hybrid Dual SIM)

I would assume LG build quality is better than Oppo but I might be wrong

    • +1

There haven't been too many deals for the V50. Reno 5G only has one SIM slot. Has 256gb storage vs 128gb.
I do like the full display of the Reno and lack of notch. The pop up camera is a little gimicky and I've noticed dust in it.

    • Have a read of this comment.

    • Gotta be careful with specs. A qhd display is not necessarily better than a fhd+. LG poled have had issues in the past. Unless someone does a proper display analysis, it's hard to say. I have the oppo Reno 10x and my main complaint is it's brightness in daylight. The lack of a qhd is not deal breaker at this price point.

  • i was going to get the A71 and hold out when it's $450 - do you think this is worth the extra 150?

    • -1

Yep. Better camera, vastly better processor and 5g futureproofing. Notchless display as well.

      • thank you - will have to see what Oppo UI is like then! thanks

    • What about S10 lite, it has snapdragon 855, 8gb ram, 129gig storage. Got it for $550 from toby deals.

      • hmm thanks i didnt even look into that one. i will have a look cheers

      • From your research. Samsung s10 lite better or this oppo 5G better.

Also tobydeals, is this australian warranty or overseas?
sorry, warranty is not clear on the website.

        • +3

Personally, I would go for oppo 5g with the two deals in mind. More useful camera setup on the oppo with telephoto vs macro. More storage & RAM. 5g futurproofing. Aussie stock with local warranty Fast delivery with 5gworld. Last time they used express austpost with my package. Tobydeals is a hk based grey goods importer. They're legit but shipping times and warranty is a mixed bag. No brainer really. The Reno 5g uses a Samsung oled panel so displays should be similar.

          • @griffith 101: Thank you for your feedback

          • @griffith 101: Was about to get that S10.
Thanks for reminding me that it's an Aussie company selling the oppo
Due to recent events, I am trying to 'Buy Aussie' or at least, 'through Aussie' where I can.
Got one! Albeit a green one :(

  • Can anyone confirm if it is a dual sim or single and does it have space for an SDCard?

  • Just received my order - pretty quick postage all things considered.
But it doesn't have an update to Android 10!
Still stuck on Color os 6 ☹️

    *Edit: weirdly update just appeared!

  • Is this a better deal?

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/OPPO-Reno-5G-256GB-Ocean-Green-O…

    $575.22 with HAPPY3 code and 1% cashback.

    • I can't seem to get that code to work

  • Can't seem to update to ColorOS 7. Anyone knows how to force the update?
