Sennheiser HD 458BT Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones - $149.99 (Was $299) @ JB Hi-Fi

240

Functionally identical to the 450BT's but uglier (which are also on sale) . Good pair of wirless headphones for home use.

I got the 350bt a few weeks ago for $149, they work great but their ear cups are really small, probably not great if you have large floppy ears. Or you might want some replacement cups ready.

  • There is a 5% off code for JB the other day that is now expired. Is anyone aware of another valid one?

Using these as I'm working right now. Previous cans were Sony MDR 1000X that broke. Got these for $149 while I save up for the new Bose 700's. Yes not as comfortable as Sony's but I eventually got use to them. Bluetooth connectivity is better than Sony's. ANC is really average compared to Sony's but sound isnt too bad IMO. Found the controls a bit fiddly and no light to tell you if they are on or not is a bit annoying. I kind of regretted purchasing them as ANC has been disappointing but I was desperate at the time when my Sony's broke. Once I buy the Bose or get my Sony's fixed, these will be my TV watching/backup cans. They are ok for non ANC needs.

  • These are $149.99 on the Sennheiser AU site

    • Yep and not available.

        Fair cop

  • The the Sennheiser 458bt has red added to it (making it faster and longer reaching?). I assume it’s used to indicated that it’s using Bluetooth 5.0 as opposed to version 4.0 in 450btnc.

Also the other differences I notice is the 458bt has USB C as opposed to micro USB.

    • has red added to it
Not just red, red stripes! You know how much you'd normally pay for red speed stripes?

  • I purchased these a few weeks ago, and I do think they present good value for what they offer at this price… However, I found the ear cups too uncomfortable, they are really small… perhaps replacing the cups would suffice? but I ended up on-selling them.

Also have a pair I picked up from JB last time they were on sale. Happy to answer any questions about them.
Like podiacide said the ANC is average and has a bit of a hiss at times, sound is I'd say above average, nice and clear, a lot of bass. I've found they got uncomfortable pretty quickly but now after wearing them almost daily on the bus they've worn in nicely. The frame is all plastic so they're not 100% solid, but haven't ran into issues, they fold up nicely for portability.
As long as you buy them expecting $150 headphones for $150 not $300 headphones for $150 I don't think you'll be too dissapointed.

  • Are they better than TaoTronics BH-085? Was going to buy those but just saw this so thought might as well spend a little more on a big brand.

  • Can this be connected to 2 devices at the same time?

    • +1

      Unlikely, no.

      • Yes they can be. I've had up to 4 devices connected at once

  • How are these for watching tv via bluetooth?

  • Had bought these but returned as there was a constant and audible hissing sound at low volumes or quiet sections of a song but seems to disappear when turning the volume up but is not always possible.

  • I was in desperate need of a new pair of wireless headphones as my beloved sony MDR-ZX770BN had all the cushion areas peeling everywhere. I noticed that these were on sale a few weeks ago and decided to bite the bullet yesterday as I've got a friend that works at JB so he was able to get me a further discount to a total of 120!

Unfortunately, there are some really weird bugs with these headphones, not sure how widespread the issue is…

    1. There is this weird microphone sidetone on when connected to certain devices like my mobile and laptop, It's extremely sensitive! I can literally hear all of the faintest of noises around me while I'm watching or listening to content. weirdly this issue does not occur when it's connected to my TCL X7 android TV, I must say I'm actually impressed with the audio quality (only on the TV, not the phone/laptop).

    2. I have no clue when the noise-canceling feature is on or off, my MDR-ZX770BN has an led indicator to let me know what the status is. I'm extremely confused if there is something messed up with this feature and if it is intertwined with my issue in point one.

    3. When I'm connected to the TV sometimes it will randomly disconnect from one device to another. You have to make sure you disconnect from one device prior to going onto the new one, it seems to be getting confused at times. A bit annoying as the seamless transition from one device to another without reconnecting would have been nice.

    4. The headphones themselves connect to all my devices but for whatever reason, it refuses to connect to the Sennheiser android smart app. It literally says connecting to my model of headphones but then fails every time and asks me to reconnect as there was no device found. To make things even more silly they have a section in the app that shows exactly which headphones are compatible and a guide within it showing how to connect to the app… The only issue is that the guide its self are for completely different models compared to what I selected. I don't know if there are any firmware updates for my pair to resolve my pairs issues mentioned above when I can't even access it.

If anyone else is having any similar issues I'd like to hear from you.

Besides that compares to my old Sony MDR-ZX770BN these are definitely more punchy in the audio department but are nowhere near as comfortable, It's very much so a tight fit. A good analogy would be comparing these to a sporty Porsche and a comfy Merc.

    • Have only had minutes so far with them…
      1. I don't think mine are doing that.
      2. Yeah, noise cancelling is not the best, very hard to tell if on or off. Not having any kind of indicator is bad design.
      3. Haven't tested that yet.
      4. App works fine on my Android 10 Xiaomi, but you aren't missing out on much!

They are tight, which is why I jumped on this deal for my 10yo daughter. I didn't find them uncomfortable though in the short time I wore them.

    • I feel like adding my experiences for consumers awareness, I got a refund as I did not believe these met the "Active" qualification for ANC as advertised (which is what I wanted)
I agree with an earlier commenter that these are definitely closer to $150 value, not $300 headphones at half price
There are probs more comfy options with real ANC for this price

I'm no audiophile, but I really like the sound, I am a bit biased towards Senn's audio profiles, I quickly get used to and never had complaints about their sound per price point, also love their customer service, when any issue arises (they usually say they'll repair them and then send a way more expensive replacement model)

I could tell when NC was on when not listening to music and found an echo-ey noise like you're in a tunnel that blocks out a bit of sound but hard to say exactly how much (it is hard to tell while listening, so it's really marginal, maybe 5-10db)
ANC is supposed to create a negative sound wave that blocks out ambient noise, this just leaves a consistent noise that dampens ambient noise whilst not interrupting the listening experience

They didn't quite fit my smaller head and I had to move the band a lil forward, the earcups were really small, but they somehow fit really snug, but get uncomfortably sweaty after 45-60 mins listening, not ideal for headphones with 30 hours battery designed for travelling

It does connect to multiple devices and switches well between them
It will not connect to the android app

The mic is absolute garbage, which is to be expected in most headphones that aren't headsets with a dedicated mic for gaming or business, can't comment on the side-tone you mentioned, just don't buy these with any intent on using the mic
