  • Cheapest it's ever been?
Edit: didn't realise it was plus shipping. $10.75 shipping for me, total $228.75, still cheapest I believe.

    • This beats the last lowest price by 15c.

        BARGAIN!

    • I purchased for 232$ approx 3 months back.. but yes this is the cheapest it has ever been!!

Usually with shopping express their mark up on delivery can kill a deal but total still comes to $230

Is this going to show me Ad's when I turn it on like my Sony Android Tv does ?

    • Ads? Do you mean “suggesting” apps and movies available for renting? If so, yes.

      • How/where does it play these ads? I was about to pull the trigger to replace my WDTV to stream movies from my NAS drive. This would be a deal breaker for me.

        • +2

Make the upgrade man. You won't be sorry.

          • @PSEACT: Yeah… No ads on either. You will love the Shield.

        • +1

You can turn off suggested content on Shield. My home screen is completely clean other than app shortcuts.

      • But those suggestions can be turned off. Still gets ads in the apps, particularly YouTube, unless you install SmarterYouTube.

        • Hmmm that's good if you can switch off and use a workaround

          • +1

@Villainous: There is a Google Suggested Apps Channel and the Nvidea channel may do some suggesting as well. Very easy to turn them off though.

WDTV is a blast from the past, I gave up on that years ago! :)

            • +1

@OZB Al: Haha yeh was given to me years ago and still kickin. Can be a PITA to use though as it's slow, doesn't play all media types. doesn't display .srt's etc. I think it's time to finally pull the trigger on the Shield.

              • @Villainous: My old Apple TV was annoying me so much recently (crappy firmware update) I was very close to dusting off my WDTV.

    • No ads. Shows suggestions for shows, but that can just be turned off.

This thing price dropping fast. Good. No way they should get away with 32bit in 2020. Especially at this price.

    • +11

Everyone bangs on about this being 32bit like it's a PC, even though the Android TV standard is 32bit, it's only really stopping you from running Dolphin, and 64bit running on less than 3-4GB ran actually performs worse.

It's a basic streaming box, it doesn't need to be 64bit

        For now.

I got pro for $367. It is overpriced!!

    • I am looking at getting a pro from TGG for around $350. Just wanted to see if you are saying this is overpriced or the pro is overpriced? and feedback on the pro?
      thanks

      • That's probably the cheapest at the moment at $359. Depends if you need to pay extra $5 shipping on top of it.

Still can’t believe for $200 it doesn’t have a USB port. It does have a micro sd card slot at least.

Currently running a Mi Box, getting a second telly and was just going to get another mi for it. Any reason I should get this for basically double the price?

If they're 4k TV's the 4k AI up-scaling on the shields are amazing, will make any 1080p content look a lot better. Also, while they both have 2GB of RAM, the chipset in the Shield is better so would be a bit snappier going in and out of apps, plus the gaming features. Also the Shield is known to be the first device to get the latest and greatest Android TV as soon as it's released. Xiaomi is a bit slow on this I believe.

      • The AI up-scaling doesn't work with Stremio. And I use Stremio :(

      • +1

Also to add: Shield has Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, Mi Box does not.

      • This version doesn’t have AI upscaling though does it? Just the pro I thought at <$350

        • Both 2019 versions have it, this and the pro, both have the same chipset, though pro has 3gb ram, this has 2gb.

    • My Mi Box has issues with DTS via Plex and am forced to use the Plex app in Kodi.

    • If you’re happy with the Mi Box then probably not.

    • +1

I have both Shield and MiBox. Due to slowness and regular crashing of the MiBox, I've been looking to replace the MiBox with another Shield. If you are happy with the speed of your MiBox and it's not crashing, then I would say not worth upgrading. Might be worth waiting for the rumoured new Google TV with remote.

    • What's the advantage of getting a Mi Box over say Chromecasting from my computer?

      • +1

MiBox has its own remote. All apps in one place via Android TV interface. Easier for other family members without taking a laptop or phone/tablet around the house. Otherwise Chromecast is fine

        • +1

          Thanks for explaining so clearly!

  • +2

Did google announce theirs yet? was rumoured they have an android box being announced at the start of the month?

    • +1

Also waiting on that one to be announced before I decide to buy a Shield.

      • Likewise… Waiting waiting waiting

  • +1

anyone know if the old remotes work with these?

thinking about buying this just for the remote and continuing to use my old shield.

want to sell the tube with the old remote.

  • whats the advantage over atv 4k and lgc9 apps? not sure if theres a point of getting one if i only use them for watching shows. my atv is also connected to stereo homepods.

can you just run this as a headerless Plex server that does realtime transcoding (encoding) up to, say 2k or 4k?

    • it is considerably cheaper than a NUC, and I don't need it as a TV-connected device.

Edit: I'll answer my own question. The Nvidia Sheild TV pro has a Plex Server built in, and this device seems not to. Also, this one has 8gb system Ram and 2gb gfx/TegraX1+ ram, but the pro has 16gb ram and 3gb on the tegraX1+ CPU/Gpu.

  • Would I be able to stream my pc through this?
I'd like to play pc games in my cinema room…

thanks OP, bought one as a workaround to solve the problems im having with my Android TV Sony X9500G
