BnB Supporter Universal Bike Rack (2 Bikes) for $99 + $40-$50 Delivery (Free C&C) @ BB Cycles

40

This BnB Supporter bike carrier is a universal fits that should fit a sedan, hatchback, station wagon or SUV. It attaches with 6 straps to the back of the vehicle. I was looking for something for my VW Passat wagon as I don't have a towbar. It fits quite easily and securely, and the great thing about it is that because it sits higher than most (it is above the number plate) there is no need for an extra rego plate (which saves another $80+.

We have two 27.5" mountain bikes and the one with 27.5" x 2.25 tyres is a very tight fit in the tracks. The other one has 27.5" x 2.10 tyres and it is at the limit for the length of the standard straps. I bought 4 Grunt 0.5m long tie-down straps at Bunnings for $9 as added security for the standard straps. So if you have a bike with big tyres this is something to consider.

The next cheapest shop with one of these BnB Supporter racks was $220 + postage, so this was a real bargain for anyone wanting a non-towbar mounted bike rack.

I bought a few small extras (including 2 rear bike lights) to get the total over $150 to get free shipping from Perth to Brisbane. I bought it on Sunday and it arrived in Brisbane 5 days later on Friday morning, so quick postage from Perth.

I have since had a problem where both rear light brackets (nothing to do with the bike rack) have cracked and broken, and after contacting the shop, they gave me a full refund for the lights 3 hours later, so their service seems to be very good.

I think my first deal posted, so be gentle :-)

Looks like a great way to damage your car panels…

    • Not so far, but only done a 60km round trip loaded and a few trips empty so far.

The hooks at the ends of the straps (that hook around the edge of the rear door) are plastic coated, not plain metal.

on both cars in your link, it covers the rego plate completely.

Most carriers will have you putting on a lightboard with number plate or unscrewing the vehicles number plate and put on the bikes.

      • or unscrewing the vehicles number plate and put on the bikes.

        is that legal?

        • In Victoria it's permitted.

Before I had a third number plate, I unscrewed the rear plate from the car and put it on a lightboard and hung from the rear-placed bikes during transport. It was an absolute hassle though, because when I took the bikes off the car, I had to re-attached the number plate to the vehicle when it was parked.

Then repeat the process when I returned from my ride to drive home.

No need with this one. Don't listen to JV - he doesn't know what he is talking about in this case.

With the rack on my car (loaded with 2 bikes) the number plate is clearly visible when I stand behind the car. The tail lights are partially obscured by the bike wheels, but still visible.

        • No need with this one. Don't listen to JV - he doesn't know what he is talking about in this case.

Look at the photos in the link you posted.

There are 2 cars and both have their rego covered by the carrier.

          • @jv: Watch this video. https://youtu.be/RGc_GQlc_z0

            The number plate is visible.

              The number plate is visible.

Not on the 2 models used for the photos in the link, the carrier would cover them completely.

              • @jv: Look at the angle that the photo is taken. I'm sure that if they take pics of both cars directly from the back, the number plate is visible.

I've googled this model and all the pics that have been posted, as well as videos, clearly show that the number plate is visible. But the OP has, it and has stated so.

The carriers make contact with the car below the boot and completely cover where the rego plate goes, which is in the centre of the boot door.

You did notice that the photo was taken from well above the rack (and not directly behind the car) ???

I think the photos in the link are trying to show what the rack looks like and not what the rego plate looks like.

      • The carriers are completely covering where the rego plates go on those cars.

      • You did notice that the photo was taken from well above the rack

Yep, have to be clearly visible from a 45° angle looking down.

If you want to get booked, go for it, but don't mislead people into thinking this is legal…

        • The licence plate is not covered when it is viewed from behind the car. I had a QLD police car driving behind me for at least 5 minutes on a trip last week, and they did not seem to have an issue (or didn't notice ?) with it.

I would agree that it would not be visible when viewed at 45° from 20 metres behind the car (as per your link). I am not sure how or why anyone would be viewing a plate from that position (cherry picker, high rise apartment ??). I would suggest that many utes and fixed body trucks might not comply with this rule either as the tray often overhangs the number plate (or a load hanging off the back of the vehicle).

I can only comment that I have been on the road with a police car following behind me and nothing was said.

It is therefore illegal to use that way.

Lol you went from "it covers the rego plate completely"

to "it's not visible at a 45 degree angle, 20 metres away"

      • Lol. It covers it completely from speed cameras and toll cameras, that's why it's illegal.

  • Interesting rack. I've never seen these types before.

I've used the conventional strapped ones before and I always felt it put too much stress on the boot-lid.

Maybe on a wagon the stress points are different.

    • I think it does say that it is not to be used with a hatchback or wagon with a plastic spoiler. The spoiler on my Passat is metal, and not problems at all so far.

I can't comment for a sedan boot lid, but I would guess that the weight load is shared between the top and bottom supports so it would probably tend to push down on the bottom one more because the bikes are hanging off the back maybe ?

I've not used this type/one, but I've seen similar and had many others. The good thing about this is that it's a strap on and has the bike resting on rails as opposed to hanging from the frame.

My previous strap ons (yes that's what they're called) resulted in damage to the bike frame when bouncing around on bumps etc.

I now make sure every car I get (lease renewed each 2.5 years) has a tow bar to avoid this issue.

    • Yes. With this one all of the bike's weight is sitting on the wheels on the tracks/rails. There is a lockable arm that holds the top (or seat) tube, but it just stabilises the bike and doesn't carry any weight. Driving across Brisbane to the bayside I could barely see any movement of the bikes (apart from the chains bouncing a bit).

  • Hi OP. In just watched the install video. https://youtu.be/RGc_GQlc_z0

With regards to the clamp that clamps onto the top bar of the bike frame, is it adjustable? The reason I ask is because I have 2 kids junior race bikes. The wheels are 20inch, meaning the bike isn't that high, so will the clamp be able to clamp onto the frame or will it be too long?

I jus bought the Allen boot rack that has 2 arms the go under the tip tube of the frame, but the arms are too wide and won't fit. Wish I saw this rack earlier..

    • I think you are referring to the bars with the clamp at the end that clamps the top or seat tube of the bike. Those tubes are adjustable for length by around 150-200mm from memory so they can be lengthened a bit. The bar (U-shaped) that those tubes attach to is also adjustable in that the angle/position of the whole bar can be rotated compared to the rest of the carrier, so I think you could rotate it forwards and down to add more length to the clamp tubes if necessary.

I don't have any bikes that small to try them, but I think it would work fine - 20" isn't that small. It may not work for a really small kids bike - not sure.

  • I was looking forward to buying this rack because of how the bikes were mounted. But after trying to purchase it I found the seller to be misleading.

I tried purchase 2 racks (1 for me and 1 for my sister), but when i went to check out, the postage showed as $75 (brisbane) as well as saying no stock. I contacted the seller on facebook and was told that if I was to buy buy 1, the postage would be $62 even though the initial item page had est postage as $45. He then told me that he had enough stock and if i wanted to buy 2 racks, the postage would be $122. I questioned this and told him that his webpage stated that postage was free with purchases over $150. He came back saying that he cant do free postage for the rack as the postage cost was too high.

I understand the item price is cheap, but i this this is the old version which has been replaced by a newer version, which has upgraded clamps and is coloured black and blue/green.

Buyers beware… He has also changed the stock to sold out.

    • Hmm. Sounds dodgy.

My previous experience with this type of bike rack (20 years ago on a Ford Laser hatch mind you) was not a good one. The car panels were scratched and damaged by the strap on hooks, even though they were rubber coated. I swore to never use one again after that. Maybe they have improved, but I’d like to hear that from someone who has actually used one for more than a year. Otherwise, I would avoid this type of bike rack.

I also think the license plates would be at least partially covered, so good luck explaining that to the police. I wouldn’t take that risk.

      Just my two cents.

      • The licence plate is not covered when it is viewed from behind the car. I had a QLD police car driving behind me for at least 5 minutes on a trip last week, and they did not seem to have an issue (or didn't notice ?) with it.

That doesn't sound good and is quite different from my experience. When I initially added just the rack to my cart (first time I have used the shop), it came up with about $51 postage to Brisbane. I went back and added smaller items to a total value of $158, and it defaulted to free shipping, so I had not need to contact the shop. I paid on the Sunday, and got confirmation on Monday that it had shipped, and it was delivered in Brisbane on Friday morning.

When I contacted them about the broken light brackets, I got responses from 2 different women (not a man - Cat Hopkins & Bunny Lim), and both were extremely efficient. They did not question me further (I offered to send them photos of the broken brackets) - they just refunded the full $20 for the lights within a couple of hours.

As for stock, they may have had only a couple in stock and got OzBargained ?

      • When I asked him about why it let me add 2 racks, but stated no stock and also added shipping costs, even though the total was over $150, this was his reply. "You can order direct from us."

Then I kept asking him why his website stated free postage for orders over $150, he kept on giving me excuses like this.. "That’s ok. If you check I have changed that once we found out how much it cost to send to Queensland."

After he said that, I refreshed the page and the item was listed as out of stock. The guy simply doesn't want to honour the free postage, but wants ppl to contact him to make the purchase, so he can add on the inflated shipping cost..
