I just posted a deal for an adjustable DE safety razor that’s more expensive and (IMHO) better quality, but if you just want a cheap one this should fit the bill. It’s all metal so will last longer than crappy plastic models. It looks to have a fairly open head so it’ll most likely be an aggressive shave. YMMV

I’d still recommend Vshod.com for blades, though, they have a great selection at excellent prices, and always have free shipping.

Love my DE shaver, I used to use a Merkur HD 34C until it disappeared, now I'm using a 70s butterfly Gilette. Always use the Feather blades. This looks to be a good DE for the price to get the job done, and combined with an anti-fog mirror it's a great experience for the shower.

    • Do you feel DE gives better shave or you just like the feel or value.

Currently, use disposable cartridge (shick 3 hydro or something). They are pretty economical for me (One cartridge last 3+ months).

Was thinking going DE (but bit afraid I'll cut myself since i already get the occasional nick with cartridges)

I have this exact same one bought under the QShave brand. It's my first DE razor and initially I cut the crap out of my face as I'd never tried a DE razor before and used to use an electric shaver and occasionally Gillette cartridges. But now I'm used to it and loving it. You don't need a fancy expensive setup to get the job done. I have a cheap brush, cheap shaving gel and some Persona Blue blades. Best thing about DE razors is they don't clog up when shaving for a while so it's quicker to shave. A quick rinse under water and you're good to go again. The cut is super close with this one but it's subjective as I haven't used other DE razors or blades. All comparitive to cartridges and electric shavers. Two or three passes is all it takes for a clean shave. Highly recommend, check out a set with some free blades as a cheap trial before buying a pack of 100 blades.

I picked up one of those on aliexpress for under four bucks.

Actually quite good as long as you don't go more that a few days between shaves

guys Ive been using these safety razors for close to a year now. A few tips: You can use soap like Dove instead of those overpriced shaving soaps. Always go with the grain on the 1st pass, then against 2nd pass. I stole my wife makeup brush to apply the soap, now I don't even foam up the soap I just rub the bar on my face for the lather.
Never use shaving cream or gel, they are for those disposable type cartridge razors. you will cut your face up.
let the weight of the razor do the work. don't apply too much pressure

    • Cheap shaving cream works fine, just make sure you wet your face thoroughly first, and add a few drops of water to the cream before applying. Never had an issue doing that.

    • i use water, better yet, you can use olive oil.

  • What's the main difference between shavers like this and ones like the Gilette Mach line?

I converted to double-edge shaving, I dunno, maybe 7-8yrs ago when I was still in school.

My advice is pay up and get some nice gear.

Considering a good razor can last you so many years, and you frequently shave, you'll appreciate the quality and nicer experience for only so little more in price.

I started cheap. My first double-edge developed a mechanical issue with the release, and the sit of the blade in the chamber was not as square and flat as it should be. My brush shed it's synthetic fibres with use.

I've now been using a long-handled Merkur for a while. I've got a badger-haired brush and a matching Edwin Jagger bowl, and use a decent shaving soap.

Beard & Blade are my personal recommendation. Good quality gear, hard to beat prices, free postage over $20.

    This is a good start:

    • The reviewer at refinedshave.com seems to think so. I personally find they suit my skin the best of all the blades I’ve tried, but it’s a very personal experience so YMMV. I’d suggest getting a small sample pack from vshod.com first and trying them before getting a large supply.

    • Go on eBay and find yourself a sample pack of blades. People package together different brands and blades, so you can try them out and see what works best for you.

Personally I settled on Astras. I know there's a lot of love for Feathers, but I found I was much more likely to cut myself using them (probably just my bad technique). I've never seen anyone mention BIC blades in any shaving forums, or seen them in sample bundles, so I'd suggest giving it a miss.

Once you've found a blade you like, you can get yourself a supply that will last you years for < $20.

The merkur / edwin Jagger head design is much better than this. Spend a bit more and get the beard and blade deal that was recently posted.
