Great prices on Noctua CPU coolers. Don't think I need to tell you guys about the reputation that Noctua has for producing high quality and quiet CPU coolers.

I have been umming and ahhing about which one to get. I was looking at the Noctua NH-D15 but noobishly bought G.Skill Ripjaws V 32GB (2x16GB) 3200MHz: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/552278 and only afterwards realised that the 42mm clearance for that ram would have been too high for the NH-D15 with its 140mm x2 configuration. Was about to get the NH-U14S but at about $6 more the NH-D14 with 120mm and 140mm fans seemed like a better deal and would definitely clear my ram. For all of those wondering how these coolers perform compared to the NH-D15, there wasn't much in it at only few degrees difference at max CPU performance and idle.

Two fans of nhd15 won't be the issue regarding the clearance, you can adjust your fan position to give more clearance. Only concern is the width of your case. The nhd15 is fine for my RGB ram. I ordered my nhd15 and case from the previous deal:

    • Thanks for replying. I forgot to mention I was looking for a smaller case with a smaller clearance. I know you could move the 2nd fan up or just use a 1 fan configuration but didn't want to risk not being able to close the panel.

  • What does SSO stand for?

Self-Stabilising Oil-Pressure. See here for an explanation

I've personally run my NH-U12P for the past 12 years for 50 weeks a year non stop. So that is over 100,000 hours of constant fan spinning and it is still good and silent! The bearing technology used by Noctua is impressive.

I have the same one. Looking at building a new computer from scratch, but wondering if I can get a kit/adapter so I can still use the same cooler. Been looking for the model of it cause I lost the package and everything else years ago. Thanks for this.

It should still be good for current day right? I can't imagine much is needed. I don't plan on overclocking much, but I find these coolers so much quieter.

EDIT: Holy hell, I just found the adaptive kit (NM-AM4 kit) and it's less than $10.

          • @IJustKnowStuff: I've been using the NH-D14 since it was released, it's amazing.

          • @IJustKnowStuff: You can get the kit sent to you free if you're prepared to wait. Insanely cool that people are using 10-15yo coolers on modern hardware.

          • @IJustKnowStuff: some of the AM4 chips can produce enough wattage to test even the best coolers. Also, because the CPU die itself is larger, more of the integrated heat spreader needs cooling compared to older CPUs where all the heat was concentrated in the centre.

Be a little wary and be prepared to upgrade to a more modern cooler. All that said the Noctua coolers are awesome and the only reason my main rig isn't still using my NH-D14 is because I moved to custom water cooling.

          • @IJustKnowStuff: Yup - just to confirm for you I did this exact thing this weekend, 5+ year old D14 with the NM-AM4 kit and straight onto a Ryzen build after being on an old Intel board.

        • One of my fans failed within warranty, they sent out a new one asap, just asking that you destroy the existing fan.

        • I've found that they slowly, after about 3 years, tend to get noisier, despite cleaning them.

I guess the noise comes from the bearing and not the motor, but not sure.

Still, replacing fans every 3 years is not too bad.

It is a type of fluid dynamic bearing

I think these are one of the best rated cpu fans out there but in my opinion one of the most fugliest. Why they made them in beige and toilet-brown I'll never know.

    • +2

I think they make black ones now.

      • Thank God. Pretty much any other colour scheme would have been better than the disgusting brown and beige.

        • Also you could techically add any another fan could you not?

    • Because it's visual marketing and it works. Everyone knows Noctua for having that colour whilst bringing premium performance.

  • The King of air coolers. Noctua support is great too. I contacted them when the CPU mount was stuck on the old motherboard and they sent another one from Austria express.

  • +2

I remember moving from an old socket to a new one and didn't have the mount on my NH-U12P and they sent one completely free of charge. The support is great, as are their products.

  • What's U in NH-U14S? Uni-fan? Then S for single tower?

What'd D in NH-D14? Dual-fan? No suffix means double tower?

Anyway, NH-D14 looks much better value than NH-U14S, for few dollars more you get an extra 12mm fan, extra tower, and 2 more heat pipes.

But I would probably just get the NH-U14S without going over the top. Planning for a 10700 build, most likely re-use existing Hyper 212 Evo, may be change the fan.

But if I have to spend money on a new fan, maybe better off just get a new cooler, was looking at Dark/Shadow Rock Slim, price is getting close to the Noctua.

To be honest, just want a fancy cooler, there's no special cooling needs, I don't overclock.

  • Same as previous deal - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/543037

Item is delivered from Noctua Taiwan directly, Newegg seems to be the middle-man.

    • there are no complaints about it being brown in this thread :)

For those wondering. General MTBF of these fans is 150,000 hours. Massive. I put 10 of these fans in a Lian Li PC-P80B fan replacement/hot swap DAS project. Cost me hundreds but worth it.

    • +2

10 Noctua fans in a case, that's spectacular

  • Don't buy a D15 unless you have a massive full size case. Anytime you want to work on the motherboard, plug a connector in or check something, the D15 is just annoying as fk. Always gets in the way and a pain in the arse to remove and reattach. The heatsink is also mega sharp.
