  • Dave at Grillpro doesn't import the Kamados through Louisiana for Australians. I suspect they would retail for around $2500 over here.

    • It's exactly the same as the Pit Boss @ bugnings, except in red. There'[s another make that's also exactly the same, can't remember the brand name though but there were more video about it than the Pit Boss.

  • great deal

  • +1

Komado is such a great product, I've used mine countless times over the years. But this is the regular Costco price to be fair. It's occasionally on special for ~$800

    Louisiana Pellets

    These don't taste so good.

    • -4

      Hi JV

  • +1

I saw that kamado in person at costco. They are SOLID. May be someday when I have a house of my own. Don't see myself owning these living in a unit :|

  • +1

Does a person pop up out of the grill, in a similar way as the person popping out the top of the birthday cake in "Under Siege"? The cost then may be justifiable…

    • +3

The price may seem excessive until you waste your time with cheaper options and realise you could have saved time, money and heartache just by outlaying double at the start.

      • I'm using the double wall insulated kamado dragon (non ceramic) and it's amazing. Easily does a 10h smoke at a very steady temperature; a bit of work to set up a good snake with briquettes, but otherwise easy, cheap, effective.

  • bunnings have the similar ceramic kamado ( chargriller brand)for $850.

    • +2

The Bunnings one is woeful quality and the Costoco one is exemplary quality. I have inspected both thoroughly.

      • +1

Louisana Grills and Pit Boss Grills are the same. All made by Dansons.

        • +2

I have inspected both thoroughly. Have you? They are worlds apart in quality.

          You only have to google Dansons and read their own summary of each brand;

Pitt Boss: … Offering the best value per sq. inch in the pellet grill industry… For superior grilling at an affordable cost…
Value… affordable… this is budget tier marketing speak.

Louisiana Grills: … Designed with quality and durability in mind… Own a world class BBQ in your own backyard…
Quality… durability… world class… this is premium tier marketing speak.

          • @Martyroz: How about the new traeger series pellet grills, do u have any knowledge about traeger?

          • @Martyroz: Yes, I have inspected them both and they look identical to me.
On Kamado Guru forum there are several people saying that Louisiana Grills Kamados are rebranded Pit Boss Kamados

          • @Martyroz: Greg is right.
I got floor stock Pit Boss for $600 with cover.
There's a 3rd version of this unit; Pit Boss, LG and some other one available in the US.

          • @Martyroz: I went to Bunnings tonight, the pitboss looks the same (same vents, thermometer features etc) but is definitely lighter. So it might just be smaller in diameter.

            • @[Deactivated]: Yes is smaller

            • @[Deactivated]: The seal on the Costco one looks premium.
The seal on the Bunnings one looked like a fabric off-cut from a sweatshop in China.

Maybe my local Bunnings has old stock or something… but it looked so inferior to me, and as others have mentioned; smaller.

              • @Martyroz: Yeah I checked them out last night, the Bunnings one I could move the box myself so it's definitely lighter and whilst looks similar it's not the same.

The Costco one took 3 of us to lift it.

      • +1

I just bought the Costco LG K24 Kamado after months of pondering whether to get it or the bunnings one.

The Bunnings one, the Pitboss K22 is the 22" barrel/body and the Costco model, the LG K24 is the 24" barrel/body.

Whilst 2" might not seem like much difference in the scheme of things, the slight differences in Costco version push it over the line for the little difference in price. (if you take into account the $60 costco membership).

Yes Dansons is the US distributor… but YNNI is the Chinese Manufacturer…

The current model Costco red LG K24 is a revision of last years versions that came in Red/Black/Blue at various times of the year, the primary differences are the better hinge system, magnet latch lid and also the new woven fibreglass seal on lid and body, and the second tiered cooking shelf.

The Pit Boss (which will probably incorporate these changes later) has the spring loaded finger latch and the felt seal.

Having cooked a couple of times with the Kamado now, I can say it gets hot quickly… I halved a redhead firelighted and put each half just off center of the racked coals, lit it up, let it run for 10 minutes there were two small concentrated burning coal beds… I then put the ceramic splitter on the top, and the cooking grates and let it warm up - probably another 10 minutes later it was 500 degrees Fahrenheit and the entire coal bed were ignited.

It does take a lot of hours to cool down after a cook though, but that just speaks to it's amazing heat retention.

        • Excellent post, thankyou. I just wish Costco delivered this item!!! The box is so big.

          • @Martyroz: It is - I had to unpack it, put the body and lid in the boot and stuff everything else beside it to assemble later (Subaru Forester)

  • I am using Akron char grill, metal, not as goof of heat retain, but won’t crack. Just 550 at Bunnings

    • +2

Not having to worry about cracking is what sold me on the Bunnings Akorn. That was after hearing about how my brothers father-in-law is onto his 3rd ceramic Kamado after cracking the other two.
I can crank mine up to steak searing temps quick with no worries of that happening. The looks of the ceramic ones are much, much better but the outcome is indistinguisable.

Thing to warn people about - regardless of Kamado - this is just the initial cost. Keep your wallet out because you'll keep finding more to buy. e.g.
-quality lump charcoal - which you'll likely end up with a few varieties of for different types of cooks,
-varities of wood chunks for smoking
      -fire slap gloves
-automatic fan system e.g. Smartfire grill or similar so you can cook overnight or leave the house without ruining the cook
-an injector to moisturise the meat + salts to inject
      -temperature probes
-various rubs to experiment with (I like Holy Cow from Meat Church) until you go down the path of mixing your own
      -fancy racks for ribs
-a dedicated cooler bin for resting your cooks
      -caterer size rolls of tinfoil
-Long tongs for whacking anyone who wants to open up the bbq for a look at how its going.
      -costco briskets

I reckon start with an Akorn or Dragon then if you end up way down the rabbit hole of low n slow it's easy to justify getting a ceramic cause at that point you'll need the capacity of two BBQ's anyway.

  • Just noticed that Bunnings have a Pitt Boss ceramic for $949. Pit boss is owned by Louisiana so this would be the same grill but rebranded.

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/pit-boss-ceramic-kamado-pitboss-…

    The Louisiana is 134kg.

    • -2

      Specs say

      Total weight: 81kg

      • +1

        that's specsavers

    • +1

No not the same Costco one is 24” bunnings is only 18” or “20

      • -1

        They're both 22"

        • +1

The Costco one is 24” I have some the ones at bunnings r same price but smaller

    • link doesn't work? I only see 'Char-Griller' branded kamado.

  • +7

They have had these grills for the same price for over a year, so not really a bargain.

    • Yep, not sure where the OP gets the $1800 rrp from either. Gotta wonder what their angle is?

    • I saw those Kamado’s the other day(mask mode on) @Costco Casula(mask mode off) and I got excited thinking that price was a bargain.
Went back home to find out that Louisiana Grills and Pit Boss Grills are the same. All made by Dansons.

  • similar to the Kamado Joe version 2

Do you mean it has all the same internals, dual layer rack, spring loaded lid, etc?

    • Yep!!

  • +1

These r 949 normally iv got the Blu one but I paid $450 for all min from Costco theses were never $1800

    • -2

When were they $450? I missed that special! That's a great price!

      • I got 3 I kept one sold the other 2 to mates

        • I got so excited after seeing that deal last year but my local Cosco(Marsden Park) said no :(

    • There is no way you got an lg900c2 for $450.

Given that most places are now $1999 for them..

      https://www.bbqsandoutdoor.com.au/product/louisiana-lg900-pe…

      • These r 999 at Costco as of today

        • They are $999 every day. Including delivery.

This is one of mine Costco we’re selling them of that’s y $450

    • +1

@Dex38313 The problem is that somehow you manage to get really insane deals(and that’s not by just asking, I have tried that in a few occasions and didn’t work) I still remember your $450 Everdure Hub deal(RRP >$1750) 😋

      • Yes I had for of them but I only have one left now but I talk the talk and I have reciepts to back up all my prices and I doo get these prices just by asking

        • Are you looking to move that one on too?

        • +1

Next time you are in Sydney, can I borrow you for 60 minutes? :P

      • +4

He distributed all his stat points to charisma when he set up his character sheet.

Consequently his mana pool sucks and he can't lift more than 5kg before he is too overloaded to move. He needed to use a scroll of town portal just to get the bbq home.

  • +4

Also the Louisiana pellets are cheap, I went and bought 10 bags, works out to be like $2.50 a kilo. They come in 18kg bags.

    • -1

Probably should've saved your money and bought a real smoker. No offense, just my opinion on pellet grills.

      • +2

Having worked in BBQs for years, having seen all the stick burners from Yoder to Bullock head Creek to southern cross smokers.

This is a good pellet grill which is very similar to Traeger. Most people don't run stick burners anymore.

        • -1

I'm just not a fan of pellet grills, overpriced Traeger or anything else.

Since when do pellet grills win bbq comps?

I've heard UDSs win, Weber smokey mountains, but I'd be surprised if people are running pellets and winning.

          • @TEER3X: Harry Soo loves pellet grills, as much as he loves his many WSMs. He uses both GMGs and the Weber Smokefire. If they’re good enough for one of the best champion bbqers in the US, they’re good enough for you and me.

            • @dwhes: It's all a matter of personal preference, if you're happy with pellets then great.

Personally I don't think you can achieve the flavour of a stick burner or even charcoal with pellet grills. Yes you can make some great bbq, but there will always be something missing.

I doubt Harry Soo wins any serious comps with pellet smokers.

It would be rare for a restaurant to use a pellet grill for their bbq, they do exist but aren't as good as a place that does it the conventional way.

I've been smoking for over 10 years and have owned 2 different Pit boss pellet grills in that time among many other contraptions. They are excellent for ease of use and the results are pretty good, had lots of compliments when using those, but don't hold a candle to a stick burner or even a wsm.

  • 949.99 is regular price.

  • Can someone tell me how these grills stack up against the electric ignition grills such as Traeger and Everdure (which uses charcoal):

    https://www.traegergrills.com/pellet-grills/pro/575

    https://www.everdurebyheston.com/product/4k

    • Traeger has a wifi model if you want to spend $3200.
GMG has a wifi model too for $2300.

Apart from that they all do the same thing but the GMG has a window which will turn black after a few cooks.

Everdure I personally wouldn't touch but that's me.

  • Hmm I was about to pull the trigger on purchasing a z grills 700e pellet smoker https://zgrills.com.au/product/700e-pellet-smoker/ Now I’m not sure! This LG900C2 goes up to 600f which gives you huge flexibility in cooking. Can reverse sear steaks nicely with those temp ranges. And a massive cooking area. The smaller hopper is a downer though and can’t find any aus sites selling the extension. Anyone who is into their low and slow have any comments on this smoker? I’m coming across to pellet smokers after using a Weber kettle and Weber Smokey mountain for a fair while. And I’m not interested in spending Traeger money, especially when z grills are the same quality.

    • +1

I’ve got the z grills 450 and I love it. Although it’s called a BOSSTON in Australia. You won’t regret using a pellet smoker. Set and almost forget cooking with all of the taste!

      • Thanks for the feedback!

  • +3

No deal here this is the regular price it's been like that for atleast 4 years!

  • If anyone buys a kamado, you also need a Meater+. Almost essential accessory.

    • Can you buy Meater+ locally?

      • bbqgalore's and couple other places.

    • No need to spend $200 for a wireless one with Maximum ambient temperature: 275°C (cooker).
There are plenty wired ones out there with similar functions, higher max temp and much cheaper.
Having said that, I would love to own one of those :)

      • what are you cooking at >275c?
It's really expensive, but totally worth it for the convenience… like wifi vs ethernet.

Btw, I once cooked my Meater+ for 2hrs at 140c… Ribs: I inserted the probe close the bone the meat separate from the bone and the probe mostly fell out. The app showed no cook details just a full screen Alarm or Alert red + yellow/black lines.

        • I usually cook pizza above that temperature :)
BTW, if money is not an issue, you can buy the Everdure 4K, the probes(4,wired) are built-in :P

Have you tried the $95 ECPIN?

          • +1

@GregFiona: The "meat" part of Meater is a clue to its functionality.
The app doesn't even have a pizza cook option, or where you would insert the probe or why you would bother for a 2 min cook.
Meater+ excells for 2~18hr cooks in a Kamado.

The Ecpin looks like a Meater clone, I think I saw the Meater for ~$120 on ebay shipped from NY… but the reason for the + is bcos most people complained about range.

I get about 30m with the Meater+ with the base at ~3m away from the closed kamado.
