We Did It! We Made It It Sweden!

Thought I’d give an update to this post

Finally here! It was pretty clutch; We had our first lot of flights cancelled, our Swedish residency cards arrived literally the day before we left, and we only got permission to leave AUS 10 days ago (after we’d sold our cars, rented our house and quit our jobs) but it all worked out and now we’re finally here!

Our landlord picked us up from the airport, offered for us to stay with his family for the first few days, show us around + have some traditional Swedish Fika!

Thanks for all the support! Fingers crossed we won’t get COVID!

If anyone has questions about travelling rn, how to deal with the red tape, send luggage etc, please ask!

Here’s a few cheeky photos - note the face shields we had to wear for the entire flight!

    Congrats!

Now, tell us about fika! What is it for those who don’t know?

It’s a huge deal in Sweden - it’s even written in our contract that we have it!

I’m still learning but from my experience - You have coffee (usually black) with usually cinnamon buns (or, if you’re serious, seven types of biscuits) and you relax and chat

      • The coffee isn't great (compared to good filter coffee) but the kanelbulle are so good

note the face shields we had to wear for the entire flight!

    Oh stuff that!

    Well done,
    Good luck!

How many IKEA stores do you plan on visiting / buying all your furniture from?

How many people on the flight to Qatar, and then onto Sweden? I imagine economy class is rather roomy at the moment on international flights. Were the flights much more expensive than what you would normally expect to Europe?

    • +2

I'd say pretty normal actually… maybe 75% full? It was $1100 one way from BNE-ARN via DOH

Try the Surströmming. I hear it's delicious

    • +4

I gave my Swedish hosts some Vegemite and they hated it

  • Not exactly Swedish but still, i feel like it is something you should try….

    Lutefisk and Hakarl

  • Congrats! how's the milk tea business there?

    • They only served pickled herring milk tea… so, not good :)

well done. Looks warmer than Sydney.

    • Not for long

Enjoy and take care. I’m meant to be doing France, with my family, for my 60th next year. I’ll be lucky to make it out of Victoria by then, let alone over seas.

  • Onya! Good luck in Ikeavolvoland!

  • Any chance you can go to Stockholm and take some photos at the city center?
Heard it is full of culturally enriching people.

    It was pretty clutch

Well done surviving the clutchness. Obviously a Swedish thing.

  • Is that you Daniel?

  • +1

Well done on getting there. Stay safe and enjoy.

Sweden is also famed for magic mushroom tea and coffee, so I've heard — let us know how it goes!

  • +1

its always exciting to turn a new page, stay refreshed!

  • How long before the flight date did you submit the documents to seek approval to leave? How much documentation was required?

    • I did it probably 2 months in advance? It's a bit vague what is required, so I sent them everything I could think of (from my employment documentation to the rental agreement to rent out my house) the more the better!

Traitor to the queen and the commonwealth realm haha, anyway congratulations

  • Wow, good luck. So they don't make you quarantine on arrival?

  • +1

Haha this is crazy. I also just arrived back to Uppsala, Sweden. Flew out of Syd on the 21st July with Qatar. Same flight? Face shields were annoying. I was pretty worried about Covid here tbh given their lax policy, but seems fine in summer as you can be outside. Not sure how winter is gonna go! Don't see any Swedes wearing masks at all either.

    • Haha - I was on the BNE but we were probably on the same DOH to STO flight!

Uppsala looks so beautiful! I bet the snow there is awesome :)

It's crazy how little social distancing I'm seeing here haha

  • +1

thats awesome, that you chose to do it, and that you actually got there!

Keen to see how your school with the not amazing reputation goes - good on you!!

    • It's looking like it's going to be pretty rough haha. But that has some positives too :)

All the best! Enjoy the snus, that stuff is great

  • wow you don’t even have to quarantine

  • I told your story to my husband. Jeff says ‘Hi’ to Alex! small world.
