40

Saw on Price Hipster. $1000+ elsewhere

DDR4-2133 ECC Registered DIMM CL=15 Dual Rank 288pin 1.2V
Synology FlashStation: FS3017, FS2017
Synology RackStation: RS18017xs+

16GB variant for a very good discount too $374

Seems like a good deal for those who need one of these. I personally don't need them as I don't do anything Synology file management related.

Enjoy

  • How does something like this compare? I don’t know enough about ram to know why CL15 is that much more expensive over CL19.

    KSM26ED8/16ME Server Premier - DDR4-16 GB - DIMM 288-pin - 2666 MHz / PC4-21300 - CL19-1.2 V - unbuffered - ECC https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07BGDG5ZP

    $160

    • The price different is not just refectled by CAS latency rating. This is registered memory for computere server, the one you linked is unbuffered memory, they won't work interchangably.

      • Exactly this. Where standard non-ECC RAM would have a bad bit and you get a BSOD this memory can correct for that and keep running as normal.

        • That Kingston RAM I posted is ECC, it just isn't registered ECC. It is unbuffered ECC.

          • @OzzyBrak: In my experience, if a device uses registered, you can only use registered. Servers typically have registered ECC.

            • @norkle: Nope. You also have servers that can only accept Unbuffered (Xeon E3 should fall into this category).
You have RDIMMs where you have the potential to get a ton of RAM (like 16/32 slots), as the memory controller would be unable to drive that amount of circuitry without extra support. With the standard 2/4 slots Registered might be not needed.

Having said that, if the MB/CPU are compatible with RDIMMS these can often be found for much less $.

      • Thanks, so something like this instead?

Samsung M393A4K40BB1-CRC 32GB DDR4-2400 LP ECC Reg Server Memory https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B01DTJ8EU6/

I’ve been looking for unbuffered ecc for a new build and don’t know much about it. I’m asking these questions as the synology ram posted seems expensive compared to what I’ve been looking at, so I’m trying to find out why.

  • +1
  • Screw synology for their ram compatibility BS.

  • Oh, I was excited for a minute.

I thought this was unbuffered ecc.

Registered is expensive to buy new, but comes out in piles as soon as warranty terms tick past.

Good business deal, but home server folks are better off buying last gen gear for a tuppence.
