New to JobSeeker: How Do I Get an Employment Provider

“From 4 August mutual obligations will be gradually reintroduced”. I’m new to the system. Will an employment provider contact me?

Yes. Centrelink should assign you one/help you choose one during your interview with them. Until then, nothing you need to do.

    • Will they phone interview me?

      • Don't think too many government run centres are making people come there in person. Would assume it'll be phone contact or email only for a little while (at least a month or two)

      • Yes. Centrelink will call you at some point. At that interview they then refer you to a local employment service. As someone below mentioned, you will probably find the employment service is waste of time re: actually getting a job. They seem to be more about making sure you stay in compliance for your payments, but I guess YMMV depending on which industry you are in.

You'll soon realise how unhelpful Employment providers' are. Complete waste of a job seekers time.

      So true.

I work in a pub so I was stood down and ineligible for JobKeeper so I got approved for JobSeeker.

Now I have been back at work full-time for a few weeks, and an Employment Provider has contacted me and said I need to do all this paperwork and come in for an interview, etc. I told them I am back to full-time work, but they said I still need to do it all. Even though Centrelink themselves said I don't. Complete waste of everyone's time.

The Employment Provider gets paid by the Government when you do the paperwork & the interview, and that's why they're pressuring you.

Just tell them to nick off, if you're back at work & don't need the Centrelink payment anymore.

Otherwise they don't get paid. Which is fine by me, had the same thing happen a few years ago.

It's almost like watching low quality videos in a run-down office did nothing to help me.

As others have mentioned, providers get paid by signing job seekers and they get commission when the job seeker finds work. Best advice ignore their calls.

    • And taxpayers' money. Rather they employed proper case managers at Centrelink, like the good old CES days.

Lol welcome to the first level of hell, if you are assessed as able to do a job welcome to the 12 week waiting period. They will tell you to look for a job and let you use a pc there if needed but won't assist with training or anything else.

When I rang the government department that oversees this they said they are able to assist now and to talk to a line manager… neato were the first level of hell when you add that centrelink took 10 weeks to lodge my claim…

I had gone to tafe, applied for back to work funding for my course and got a job then they harassed me for 2 weeks ringing 3 times a week requesting I sign paperwork to say they got me the job -.-

    Neato are pure evil.

    • there is no waiting period during covid-19.

      • Ahh good this was like 12 months ago. First and hopefully last time.

  • havent you been contacted by one?

when did you start getting the jobseeker payment?

another way is to link/open jobactive from mygov.

  • Don't refuse job offers. Though I don't know how Centrelink or your job network provider would ever know if you did refuse a job offer. Or why would you refuse a job offer, unless it was for a really shitty job or job involved working around covid hotspots.

Maybe the job is for 3 hour casual shifts 30km from home. I would refuse that (or make sure that I'm not 'suitable').

Are you able to refuse jobs like that where it doesn't make economic sense to do it?

  • Does anyone know how the JobSeeker payment works with the announcement of being able to work up to 30hrs a fortnight?

For example, if my hours have just been reduced to 8hrs per week but will be returning to normal in 8 weeks time am I expected to look for work and then bail on the person that hires me?

Since I’m recovering from a disability I can possibly get sickness allowance but don’t want to waste my Drs time or extra tax payer money for only 8 weeks.

  • Employment service (jobactive) providers, like Centrelink, have had significant numbers of new job seekers to deal with recently, so there is a backlog. You may be contacted by Centrelink to complete the questionnaire to assess your needs and refer you to a provider, or you may receive a notification that you have been referred to a provider, who should then contact you to make an appointment and do the questionnaire with you. This may happen soon, or not for weeks. As mentioned, link your jobactive account to mygov and/or use the jobactive app. As long as you check and follow any notifications/instructions you receive you are meeting your obligations. Once you have a provider, attend your appointments and comply with their instructions, this will meet your obligations. At this stage, appointments are not face-to-face.

  • Those job centres are an absolute legal mess. They stuffed up everything for me, had no idea what the law is and put me in a dangerous situation. Sheer incompetence. Never contacted me, but cut me off payments too many times to recall. They have no idea how to handle sensitive information and blurt out your details in front of enemies seated in the same office. Pack of idiots. Never again. Imagine escaping domestic violence only to have your details loudly broadcast in their office and have an enemy follow you out the door! Uneducated morons. Beware!!!!
