hmm i buy fresh turmeric $20 a kg from the grocer

    • +3

says each tablet equivalent to 1.5g of tumeric…so $49.99 for 225g or $20 for 1000g of the real thing.sounds like a rip off to me.

      • Who needs that much tumeric!

        • +3

          Caruso

      • Suspect you mean over $200 a Kilo.

Hindustan Imports sell for $9.45 or 250g for $2.65.

The 1.5g is the amount of starting material used to produce the extract of the bioactive compounds, i.e. 1.425g yields 72mg of the 'CurcuWIN' extract - listing this on the lable is mandated by the TGA

I think it a bit unfair to compare this directly to raw Turmeric as it's main bioactive constituent, Curcumin, has notoriously low bioavailbility (close to none) in raw form - there are studies around that confirm this; some of these studies do however hint at the possibility that it is the metabolic byproducts of Curcumin that are responsible for it's positive effects - if that is true than the raw form would indeed be best; but I haven't seen anything other than speculation in this regard.

If the marketing material is to be believed, this particular extract has 46x more bioavailability compared to other enhanced forms of Curcumin (which themselves already have significantly more bioavailbity than the raw form) according to the study/studies conducted. It's quite possible that the data could have been manipulated to derive such a figure, but the fact remains that this would have infinitely better bioavailbility than the raw form.

Don't forget the homeopathic adage that the lower the concentration the higher the effect. I'm glad we have these masters of logic and science to guide us.

Jeez that's lot of money for Turmeric

  • I’ve tried a few other brands, this Is the most effective one for joint pain & bone healing. Is you compare the active ingredients inside the tablets vs other brands, this is good value.

    • Have you tried this one and if so could you please give some feedback? https://www.chemistwarehouse.com.au/buy/79233/bioglan-turmer…

      Thanks

Better of buying fresh from local grocery or costco ( much better I find) and incorporate in your diet.

You need a tiny portion in your meal and can have every day.

        • People seem to ignore this for some reason. Tumeric only seems to be useful if you use it as part of your diet (ie indian type diets). The small amounts in capsule/tablet forms are pointless

Fresh is best. Dont fall for these tablets. Get fresh tumeric and add a small amount to your daily freshly cooked meals. Tumeric is a great anti-inflamatory. Other possible ways to consume it is tumeric milk (ie, tumeric powder or freshly ground tumeric into some warm milk and add honey for a bit of flavour) to help with some pain and infections.

        • Also, take with black pepper(piperine) as it increases the bioavailability of the curcumin.

      • I haven’t tried that one, sorry can’t help :(

  • search website. there are so many better ones.

  • Just cook alot of butter chicken

Just buy the powder and mix it with warm milk. Way better for you than these tablets.

  • Add a small portion to your curry every day and keep the family healthy instead of taking tablets individually..

  • Bioavailability with Curcumin is vital. Know people who swear by Medlab that I'm even considering it myself https://shop.medlab.co/products/curcuguard-500mg-60s

Ehhhhh there's a continuing debate about it.

Technically it's terrible for you once it enters your blood plasma which is typically the aim of most additives like Piperine and MerivaSF formulations.

But there's basically the blood plasma school (high bioavailability through pills) and the intestinal mucosa school (normal dietary tumeric).

I personally hate eating tumeric and it stains everything, but until they can actually find a good objective way of being inflammation, I doubt there's a good answer for either yet.

This gives a pretty good summary

Woolworths have 1/2 price on many Vitamins and health products at the moment including the curcumin I use. Nature's Way Activated Curcumin 30 pack $13.50. You basically just have to find what works for you even if it's just a placebo. At the advertised price this Caruso product is probably worth a go though.
