Help Me Decide: Refund on My $220 Xbox One S

So a few weeks ago I started to hear a cricket chirping around my TV unit. This isn't uncommon for me to hear crickets chirping, so I just ignored it. Last night I went to try out a game I bought online, and the xbox wouldn't turn on, and I realised the cricket sound was actually the xbox trying to turn on. Anyway I went through the basic troubleshooting, and it's buggered.

I got on xbox support chat and as it's a few months out of warranty, they won't fix it. However after playing the ACL card and pointing out that the date they have on file is actually at least a month earlier than it should be, they are considering the request.

I spoke to Amazon (at the request of the MS rep) and Amazon actually offered to have me send back the main unit (a 1tb minecraft in mint condition which has barely seen 30 or 40hrs game time at most), but they said they can't replace it but they would refund me.

At first I wasn't that keen, as I have a stack of unplayed games, although really I won't be playing them any times soon, I have had some for years. With the new console coming out I started to think it might be a good time to pocket the money, except that I can't see myself paying 500 bucks plus for a console, and I need one with an optical drive so lockhart isn't an option (although if it did that could have sealed it).

So I went online to see if I could get a cheap second hand unit, and nothing is cheap, I would be paying what I would be getting back ($219) for a second hand 500gb that wasn't a limited edition.

So what would you do?

Take the money, they are going above and beyond refunding it outside of warranty, be happy with that, then wait for another xbox one deal.

Yeah, take the money, unfortunate but it's better than being out of pocket and have a dead machine.

Feel your pain, console prices have gone up. Wait and see how the new gen goes in pricing, at the very least stores clearing out One X might give you a deal for 300.

    • 300 doesn't sound too bad for a One X, but the lockhart is expected to be so far ahead of it, I am struggling to part with the 300 to have a console out by years end which is 3 times faster

    • at the very least stores clearing out One X might give you a deal for 300

I doubt it, they are hard to get at the moment with so many people stuck at home.

Get a refund and wait for the sX to come out.

Problem with the new one is I am not inclined to pay 500+ and the lockhart has no drive. I get its a cheap version but the lockhart is meant to still be streets ahead of the one x, and a bluray drive csnt be saving them more than 20 bucks in the quantities they are buying surely

It's not about the Blu-Ray drive but more about buying second-hand games that M$/Publishers see no money from.
By forcing people to go digital, the entire revenue stream is known.

I would be getting a disk version as well as it's been stated that with EA's 2021 sports lineup you will be able to upgrade to the next-gen version if you've got an Xbox One physical disk.

        • I am not big on sports games, but I like the idea that numerous games will just get better with age

      • There's no information that the lockhart has no drive. It hasn't even been announced yet.

so your options are the refund or nothing? Hmm… hard choice.

    • No the jury is still out with MS, the rep is sending it up the chain for review

  • Have you asked if it’s possible to get it repaired?

    • Repair from MS is 179, considering I paid 219 and some were going as cheap as 179 a year or so ago it's not worth it. I do sometimes repair things on my own but since it's in warranty afaic I'm not attemping it

      • I meant if you’d ask for free repair under warranty, but it sounds like they’re only offering refund.

        • I've asked, and they refused, but on complaint they are escalating it. It's funny because some other posts are talking about how great MS warranty was to fix it in period, part of the reason I posted this is because despite their having this clear statement on their site:

          https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/legalau/australian-consumer-…

It appears that their staff are told to adhere to the dates religiously, going so far as to refer me back to Amazon.

Current situation: dead xbox and amazon going above and beyond

what you want: Brand new xbox well outside of Amazons obligations to provide.

    Tip:

Accept refund graciously, look on gumtree/facebook marketplace for a 1tb One S or One X, if you don't want to pay for a Series X, and be patient. End result: You will have your cash in your pocket, and no dead machine.

If it "only had 30 or 40 hours" of use, inside 2 years, it's not really critical is it?

    • Actually it's not really, I'm currently playing FFX on PS2, and I have just about every other console aside from switch and ps4, and a backlog of 50+ 360 games to play, but it would be nice to have the option to play my xbox one games in the meantime before the series x drops price a few times in 2-3 years.

The odd part about this is that a repair seems to be off the cards, not totally, but it sounds like MS instructs its staff to refuse ACL worthy warranty repairs, despite the following statement, which let's face it they wouldn't put up unless they were asked (or told):

Limited edition wont mean much when new consoles come out.

      Lol shhh :P

I've got a Halo edition XB1, still with the box, and I'll be wanting to upgrade to the SX. Hopefully it's worth more than a standard edition XB1 when I go to do the upgrade (don't wanna live without it for the next 6 months)

      • I didnt think of that. Keep the box in good knick and I'm sure it has potential as a collectors item in a few years.

        • Original 1st gen xbox can go for a bit these days if one of the limited runs

Theres talks of microsoft having a payment plan for the new xbox but that may be US only not sure. Just wait for pricing for the new console and lockhart to be revealed so you know if it has a disc drive or not.
Your 360 games will be enhanced on the new consoles too.

    • Wow, that would really make it worth it, since I have so many still unplayed

      • BTW i saw some posts online today saying it won't have drive and will be quite small, so I'm expecting to have to go the whole hog
