OLED is really pretty. But do OLED TVs have the same black smearing that iPhone's with OLED do? I notice it a lot with grey on black, so it's really prominent with dark mode enabled.

      • +1

Does OLED still have issues with burn-in? That (along with the much higher price for the equivalent size screen) put me off when I was buying a TV a year or two back since I use mine a lot for gaming.

      • +1

I don't watch a lot of Black/Grey images on TV so I don't notice it and I don't swipe on my TV (for obvious reasons) like I do on an iphone with dark mode active.

You're less likely to notice it when you're sitting few metres back.

        https://twitter.com/i/status/1053519077958803456

    • You don't like it so no one else should get it?

      • -6

You don't like it so no one else should get it?

No one should get it, because it's inferior image quality and colour. No one needs a TV this bright in sunny AUstralia.

It's like going from a crummy LED phone to a Samsung AMOLED. The difference is spectacular.

        • +5

Look I'd much rather an IPS panel with some backlight bleed and inconsistency and colours that aren't Disney meets Bozo bright than have to worry about and then probably deal with burn in on an OLED with a third of the lifespan. I don't care how nice the colour is if I'm looking through blotches made by an old image. That's my choice. Also I don't like OLED prices.

          • @syousef: why not settle for a nice QLED VA panel from samsung or even the hisense q8

            • @striker5950: Not a huge fan of VA due to viewing angles. But right now I'm fine with my several year old 55" Full HD not smart Sony, and a couple of Soniq 42 inch second sets. I'll replace when they die.

    • -1

Your phones are AMOLED though. Same same.. but different.

      • +2

        WAAAAAAAAAAAAY different.

Compare Samsung S11 and iphone 11 pro and a normal LED phone without AMOLED or OLED.

        • +1

          is S11 a new Samsung model? ;)

          • @homersyd: Wouldn't have a clue. Just turned on the TV and apparently they're up to S20. lol

I'm iphone for now while Samsung sorts out it's 100 different flagships.

    • +10

Try and find an 85" TV with these specs in OLED

      Then mention the price

The World Is Obviously Not Ready

      • -4

Unless you live in a mansion, 85" is just totally ludicrous.

        • +1

          Well, I guess I live in a mansion then…

        • +4

          Modern, open-plan, is the term.

        • For a toilet, yes. For a normal size living room, no. My 75" looks smaller in living room 4 m away from sitting

    • Quite the opposite… Let cheap tech help pull OLED competition pricing down.

  • -4

I just bought the 65" from this serie. It's good but pretty far from OLED. I guess not point spending $2K+ on a TV which is not OLED now, it probably will be worthless in a 2 years time

    • +4

the 65 and 85 is a totally different tv… if i remember correctly, this model has local dimmining but the 65 doesnt.

      • +2

That' right for the backlight, Edge Led VS Direct LED. The serie number sould have been different…anyways

      • You'll need local dimming because it's not oled.
Yeah, neg me all you want hahahha!!!!

      • +2

Th 85 inch model has frame dimming, so basically for movies with black bars it's a big help to keep it black on black :) Obviously in the middle of the screen it's not as good as that but it does have direct backlight so will be more even, without the patchy bright spots like most edgelit LEDs. VA panel helps a tonne for better black, brightness and contrast.

    • +3

The 85” has a backlit VA panel. It’s not FALD but a lot better then the other models. The blacks are good with this.

      • +1

Gotta love VA panels. I have a S-PVA computer monitor that I've been using for 11 years now. Not LED though.

  • +1

Just replaced 65" Panasonic LCD with 75" Samsung QLED Q70T, picture now is like chalk and cheese, its really fantastic.

    • +4

I did the opposite! Two years ago I replaced my Samsung with a Panasonic. I love my Panny.

      • +3

I'm a bit Jelly! Love Pana's too, but they made the decision to stop bringing their TV's into Australia this year :(

    • +4

Upscaling on the Sony kills both of those. Upscaling should still be a priority as even with Netflix, Disney and Prime so much content is NOT 4K

Although in fairness the Nvidia Shield still has the best upscaling of any tv or device and by a considerable margin.

      • nahhh i dont think you can say better than the x1 chip

        • Yes a lot better the Nvidia shield Upscaling has brilliant AI, there is nothing else on the market that even comes close. Sony would be second, although the latest Samsung’s are closing the gap

Check the following review comparing to a Sony X900F which already has better upscaling than this model as it had the even better X1 Extreme chip.

    • -1

      Off topic?

  • Tempted to splurge but 50KG and dimensions would make it difficult when moving house.

Edit: Cheaper at Video Pro $3,470 if you can pick it up.

    • If you're moving the house, another 50kg shouldn't matter.

  • +3

If you're splurging this much on a TV, wait for the X90 series which are upgraded specs and ready for PS5.

    • +5

Won’t be close to this price though. This is an amazing price. 85” has the VA panel and backlit, but not FALD

PS5 target frame rates are so low, having a higher refresh rate is somewhat a mute point. While technically the GPU can hit 120fps they are targeting 60fps. Sure you get some benefit from a higher refresh rate, but only minimal.

      • DIRT5 already confirmed to have 120FPS mode. There'll be others over time.

        • Not at 4K though but your point is 100% correct.
These TV’s do such a great job of upscaling, all you would miss out on is no HDR.

Also with Dirt5 in enhanced FPS mode (lower resolution) 120fps is the target (ie: peak, it’s expected to spend most of its time below that). Guess we will know soon enough though!!

      • +4

        I checked and this was $3,200 last October + Cashback (Goodguys + ebay 20% + $31 ShopBack)
So price isn’t as amazing as I thought, but well below the ridiculous $6k RRP

        • +1

oh, so not that great a deal then? I might keep waiting for a 85" deal.

      • Are you sure this has a VA panel? Can't seem to find the information on Sony website.

      • there a lot of other feature that will improve gaming other than 120fps with HDMI 2.1

eARC finally use a tv as a soundbar switch with Atmos but everything in the chain needs to support it.
Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) reduces or eliminates lag, stutter and frame tearing for more fluid and better detailed gameplay.
Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) allows the ideal latency setting to automatically be set allowing for smooth, lag-free and uninterrupted viewing and interactivity so you can play game correct and still have the ps5/xbox to watch movies with all the tv processing for them
Dynamic HDR metadata pretty big also for games becasue all the HDR feature are currently static

        • +1

I was referring to bang for buck. There are already better models out now.

This model has eARC and low latency game input. Motion enhancer brings the refresh rate up to like 200/400hz can’t recall which.

But yes the new model will be better in many areas, but as I said won’t be at this price point.

      • What's your opinion on this vs QA85Q70TAWXXY if I can get both for the same price range?

Samsung you see less blooming, but a dimmer and less accurate image. In darker scenes the Sony has the lead, but bright scenes somewhat similar.
Actually surprised in this review, Samsung did bitter than I expected, especially the up scaling and motion, looks like they have made some great headway in 2020, but the Sony appears ahead (albeit marginally)

The HDR on the Samsung seems to suffer in "Game Mode", but has VBR so more suitable for next gen consoles. Depends on what is important to you.

          • @UltimateAI: thanks SMNIO :) the tv will go into a room that is not fully dark. Its not used for any gaming - just movies and netflix. i'm getting both for a similar price so cant decide which one is better buy?

          • +1

@UltimateAI: Thanks for your help - placed an order for Sony!

  • +18

Man everyone so picky about TV's every time one gets posted, like this is an AV geek forum and not a bargain site…

    • +2

      unfortunately www.ozbargaingeekarmchairexperts.com.au wasn't available

    • +3

Actually it does not surprise me if an (Oz) bargain-hunter chooses to do their homework, and share their knowledge/experience for the benefit of others, before dropping two grand (or more) on a TV.

  • +1

Extremely pleased with my X9500 55". The G series just came out, supposed to have better speakers and something else I can't remember, mighta been viewing angle.

    • +5

55? Did it come with a telescope so you can see it :)

    • +2

Sorry, H series just came out worth better speaker. I have G. To First Amendment funny guy, you might like to know that from the beginnings of tv in the 1950s until maybe 20 years ago the biggest TV you could buy was 26 inch. So we are very very spoilt atm with LCD TVs. Our lounge room is small so we sit close to the tv.

      • I think it was a joke mate

        • +2

I understand. Just explaining. I'm not upset, it's just something in my eyes. :)

  • Very tempted by the price myself!

  • +1

    i wish they would do a special on 65" x950g or h

    • nah, i have a 65 x950g and sadly with it's Android TV, sometimes video will 'stutter'. Super annoying, i ended up having to get a Nvidia Shield TV to replace Sony's Android TV

more details about this here: https://amp.reddit.com/r/bravia/comments/ffu33x/video_freeze…

      • That's interesting to hear as I also have the 65 x950g and must say the Android TV is a bit of a let down in what is otherwise an excellent tv.
I'm not keen on using an add on box though as I don't like the idea of another remote etc.

        • its good to her feedback from real owners instead of reviews on youtube. the more i read the more i see that samsung probably has the best all rounder tv's im eyeing the q80t or second choice q8 hisense for now.

        • do you think they have fixed the lag with the new h model? thing goes for 3k for a 65"

  • -1

Got a mate who works in Hardly Normal who said he can get me good deals on TVs, but this is tempting. I wonder how much better if any are his prices. Anyone know what kinds of discounts staff can get compared to buying on sale elsewhere? Is this currently the best deal around for 85", been waiting around for a while for prices to drop but tempted to just get this.

    • +2

Don't wonder. Just ask your mate?

      • I was worried it may get sold out by the time he gets back to me, He is probably working till late at the shop being a thursday night.

  • at this price would it be better to get a laser projector from xiaomi or something?
The thing I hate from all the modern LEDs TV are their judder correction techs, makes the motion looks sped up…not sure if the laser projectors have the same issue…

    • +2

Hard to find a decent true 4k projector at any price below 8k at the moment. I have been waiting. Most of the decent 4k projectors around that are mildly affordable are still using pixel shift technology.

      • I've read the pixel shift are fairly close to real 4k…the biggest concern I have is their motion performance (ie. whether they also use the same 200hz motion flow stuff from LED TVs)

        • Well, it fakes 4k but still not a native picture and i hear some people say its decent improved on FHD but still not as good as 4k. So sort of in between. In terms of size you cant beat a projector though… I have mine on a 110" screen. FHD only but still looks good. But I recently got a OLED TV for the bedroom and i was quite blown away by 4k and the colours on it.

    • +1

      Comparing apples & oranges.
I'm addicted to my jvc 4k pixel shift @120" in dedicated cinema. But for the very glassy kitch/meals/lounge, a PJ & screen at double this price doesn't stand a chance.

  • Been looking at this model for awhile. Do Sony offer extended warranty? Buying this from JB Hi-Fi gives you 2.5 years warranty?

    • Don’t forget consumer law

    • +1

With what you are paying, Consumer law can protect you. Average life should be 5 years.

      • Where's 5 years written?
It's a budget 85", and rights are a huge grey area from all I've seen. So we're stuck between an argument with seller, and overpriced phoney extended warranties.

    • +1

Big shout out to JB Hi Fi Miranda. My Sony KD-75X8500D developed a couple of horizontal lines. They happily accepted it for a warranty claim at the three year mark. Past the 2.5 people talk about.Unable to repair it, i was offered an upgrade to the 85" X85G display model for a fee of $200.

I know some people steer clear of display models but if they warrant for 3 years I'll be happy.

  • +1

    Thanks, ordered one!
Finally time to retire the 1080p projector.

Is there an Ozbargain approved mounting bracket and HDMI cable?

  • +2

    Thanks OP , bought 👍

  • +2

I give up trying to understand voters.

I've been stalking this model for 6+ months, since missing the $3196 deal. I saw this price, and glossed over it. Didn't think for a second it's worth promoting. It's the common price.

    • +1

      Got $175 CashRewards too.

      • Was $280 and no one cared.
Drops back to normal, and people love it.

        *insert Joker meme
        *insert Fry meme

        • Damn missed the cashback as well, was the TV that price back then too? Noone had posted it i guess.

        • Do you think its worth waiting for better deals on 85" tvs?

    • +1

I was stalking it too, but there have been significantly less decent TV deals since COVID, so I think this is a really good deal when combined with cash rewards

    • +1

I think for me, i havnet really been keeping track but been waiting to buy a 85" for a year or 2 and getting to the point where i dont want to wait anymore. Due to having gotten a 4k tv in the bedroom and surprised at the difference.

  • +1

Don’t forget to use the AmEx spend $500/save $50, if you have the offer saved.

  • Help me choose between this or QA85Q70TAWXXY via Samsung EPP?

    • +2

The rtings scores are not reflective of the 85" panel, which is different due to 2 reasons:
      1. The 85" Sony has a back lit panel vs edge lit for the Samsung. So it will have better black uniformity.
      2. Also, the 85" is a VA panel, in contrast to the other Sony sizes, same as the Samsung's. So the contrast will be much better compared to what's given in the review.

    • +1

Just by spec, the Sony one seems ahead.

      True 10bit panel vs 8bit + FRC.
      Direct Lit vs Edge Lit

As mentioned pretty much all online reviews are for < 85" which is a completely different TV in respect to picture quality.

  • Our theatre room is 3.7m x 3.8m; how would a TV this size go at approx 3.5m viewing distance on a couch? Would it strain the eyes?

    • Perfect.
My PJ is 120" @4mtrs (front of viewer face to screen) and its borderline overwhelming.
      http://www.displaywars.com/85-inch-16x9-vs-120-inch-16x9

There are many calculators, ratio-guides online to help.
      Either way,
Grab a tape measure & quality thin masking tape, and do a mock-up.

    • Depends on the person but no such thing as too big in my view…. Every time i have gotten a larger Projector screen or TV, you get used to the size within a few weeks and want larger again. I have a 110" screen at around 3.5m and its nothing, i would prefer larger.

      • Cliche.
Front row of cinemas is easiest example. It's the last row to fill-up, for good reason.

        Solid info, for anyone curious:
        https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/by-size/size-to-distance-r…

        • It’s the last to fill up in the days where the screen was uncomfortably higher up to cater for all the different rows. I realised the most immersive in cinemas was usually close to the front anyway. Around row 5.

  • +1

I have a 75inch screen. I sit roughly 2 metres from it. Maybe slightly more. I have still been looking for 85inch screens since not long after I got it.

They're impressive at first. But quickly become your normal.
