Put the price in the title.

Also, not that much of a deal. Other retailers have it for the same price.

Got the Western Digital 2TB My Book Essential USB3.0 for $114 from OW.
So can't see the Samsung is a great deal, $15 cheaper (but only $3 cheaper after postage), when WD seems to have a better reputation.

    • +1

yeah WD over samsung any day

    • Samsung internal 3.5" HDDs are considered to be very reliable.

    • WDs got too many useless security crap! n u cant removed it!

      • That's why you get a choice between elements and essentials. One with added features, which some would consider good, and Elements, which is, well, the bare elements.

Saw this same item today at HN, the price was $98, no shipping charges if you pick it up at the store.

Store was Broadway, and should be a national price.

    • Sure not the USB 2.0 version, that's been $98 at HN for a while.

      • Yes its the USB 3.0 one that HN is selling 2TB Samsung same as the one in the link.

    • I went to Caringbah HN today, and they had the USB2 version as a display, marked down from $136 to $119.

Can anyone else confirm that the USB3 one can be had for $99? If so, I'll track one down.

      • Orionn, i went to HN Broadway NSW again today, and checked the HDD, it is USB 3, 2TB and comes with Nero software, and the price is $97, they had pleanty of them on the shelf.

Can't see that Staples deal (& they won't deliver to Queensland).

    • +1

      • Knew CaptainAwesome wasn't right, sounded too good to be true…

I would have been pissed if I'd missed a deal like that…

  • +1

That's cheap. Get them now while they're cheap because prices will keep on rising for mechanical hard drive

    • ??? Not cheaper than many other places.
Price has been falling for quite a while.
This years prices are 1/2 last years on many units.

      • You haven't been keeping up with international news. I'd take kaals advice

        • What news? Nobody tells me anything. what was it?
I don't know what news you are reading.

There were reports from Taiwan 6 months back that the Tsunami interrupted chip production in Japan. The price increase for manufacturers was expected to be 5-10% in the second quarter of this year. That report was then inflated to 10-20%, and so on, if you follow the trail. At the same time external HDD retail prices fell here.

Then there is the scare of WD & Toshiba manufacturing being closed due to the current floods in Thailand. HDD motor manufacturers are also affected.

So, no I haven't been keeping up with the international news, but the gossip sounds scary! Mainly possible short term supply issues for manufacturers. Only time will tell.

    • What do you mean prices are going to rise? SSD's are still a few years away from being mainstream, and the Aussie dollar strength will keep prices low.

EDIT: Ok, according to this http://www.tech-pc.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&p=903038 and this may explain why Samsungs are the best prices at the moment.

      • That is UK post - price rises there are just as likely due to exchange rate & economy. Plus the post is from an individual like us - not a reliable source. So as good as gossip.
Floods will interrupt supplies. $AU will change. Shops will run specials to turn savers into spenders. So who knows what the price will be in the future?
Seagate are a lot cheaper if you don't mind USB2. I bought a basic WD 2TB USB2, and found the better USB3 for same price next day. Prices have been dropping.

    • Kaal you're kidding me right? tech will ALWAYS go down in price as long as newer technologies and new companies continue coming into the market, and since that trend isn't going to change anytime soon we are going to see steady price drops for the forseeable future

      • +2

The price rises are due to WD, Seagate and Hitachi being flooded.

Just dont know how we can expect prices to keep rising, this issue will get resolved and prices should fall again.

        • Thx for the heads up. Just ordered a drive. Hope the price is honoured.

        • Where are these price rises?
Lots of scare of what may happen.
Meanwhile the prices here are falling.

Reliable sources talk about POTENTIAL shortages causing POSSIBLE price rises in the future. We were told the same immediately after the Tsunami in Japan, but the prices fell!

Less reliable sources just run with "Mechanical HDD Prices going up fast!", http://www.tech-pc.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&p=903038 posted above. And the potential price increase doubles or quadruples when a report quotes from figures in a more reliable source - a much scarier story.

The usual ramp up in HDD production for the Christmas season is disrupted for both major players. Drive manufacturers and distributors don't keep that much inventory, because it loses value as it sits around.

Large volume buyers will tend to get the best deals, small retailers will see prices rise because they are buying drives sourced from the spot market rather than through long term contracts. It happens every time there is a disruption to a component that is in constant demand. Don't know if you remember the DRAM shortages of ~1992: prices more than doubled. DRAM manufacturers needed plastic resin for chip packages, and that mostly came from one factory in Japan that caught fire.

As for how long it might take, this site is pretty good at reporting what the distributors and manufacturers are actually saying:

        • I saved $40 by buying a drive when I did because of this thread.

    • when there will be any 2TB SSDs? 4 years?

      • +1

When will you be able to AFFORD a 2TB SSD? 40 years?

  • looks like a price drop

  • -2

Once their current stocks runs out, there won't be cheap hdd prices for a while. If you're in the Market for a hdd why not buy them now than wait a few months for it to drop again?

    • Once again, what are your sources for this FACT?
At least 1 person said they bought based on this advice! You really need to back up your claims with a few reliable links so we can make up our own minds!!
You don't work for pccasegear.com or Samsungg, do you???

It is all gossip at the moment. We were told HDD price would rise 20% due to shortages after the Tsunami 6 months back, but here prices fell.
You are right - if anything does happen, it will be a temporary blip in supplies.

  • One thing to note about these Samsung drives is that they go into sleep mode and can take a good 10 seconds to power on which is really annoying. Officeworks sells WD 2TB Elements USB2 for $98 which I would prefer over this.

  • Has the deal finished already? The URL linked here shows $149.00. Am I too late?

    • Yes, does look like the price has increased to $149
